... When my Compaq Presario laptops hard disk got busted, I bought a replacement immediately. The worse then happened, a week passed and the new drive was busted too. I never bought another cause it seemed a waste of money. I still managed using it for more than a year using Linux USB edition as the main OS. It then became a junk after I bought a whole new laptop.

laptop. Another year have passed. I disassembled the old Compaq Presario. I was hoping to get some parts for future use or get it back to working condition again. I have a spared mobile hard drive to play with.

After carefully and diligently taking off the parts one by one, I discovered a badly designed cooling system. The one and only exhaust fan that was supposed to take off the heat from processor was about 80% clogged. There was no other means

to bent off the heat produced by other components. Note: other laptop models have aluminum plates and copper tubes to channel the heat near the exhaust. The harddisk compartment had minimal holes and space for ventilation. What a pity. Now I understood why this poor laptop killed two consecutive hard drives. It was a heat problem Keeping my fingers crossed, I did four things. 1) Clean every part with a soft brush as I take them apart. I gave special attention to the one and only air bent. 2) I drilled numerous holes around the hard disk compartment. I hoped it provide sufficient air circulation. 3) I discarded the plastic covering the hard drive and replaced it with a thick aluminum sheet. I extended it outside up to battery compartment.

4) I removed the CD-RW drive and made way to an air intake fan. I included a filter to avoid dust accumulation.

Before the mod, hard disk temperature was going above 50C and up. After the mod, the max temp I am getting is 39C during a heavy application, idle temp is 33C. My modifications are quite awful in appearance but are good enough for the old laptops health. I gonna continue testing it for a few weeks and perhaps do a better and nicer looking modifications.
