OperationaI improvements
The new Stanex is relatively narrow. This will often increa-
se effective mill length by 200 mm compared with other
diaphragms, resulting in higher mill power input and
material throughput. The adjustable lifters make it pos-
sible to regulate the rate of flow through the first mill
compartment. They ensure that the material charge in the
first compartment remains at an optimum level. The slots
in the lining plates are designed to minimise the risk of
clogging, even when grinding moist additives such as
pozzolana and limestone. The large grate area enables a
high circulation factor and effective mill ventilation when
grinding in closed circuit. Fitting a new Stanex diaphragm
therefore often represents the first step in the upgrading
of an old mill installation.
MechanicaI advantages
The Stanex diaphragm is suited for both new and old
mills. The Stanex diaphragm is a rigid construction with a
heavy 25 mm steel plate as its main supporting structure.
A 15 mm front plate with large openings is fitted to the
supporting plate by means of spacer pipes and bolts.
Both plates are bolted to a ring of cast steel segments.
The front plate is fitted with 75 mm thick chromium alloy
cast steel grate plates. They are heat treated to a hard-
ness of approximately 50-52 HPC. The grate plates have
8 mm slots, this being the normal size for a closed-circuit
mill, and the total free flow area through the grates
therefore varies between 0.8 and 1.6 square metres
depending on the mill diameter. Chromium alloy cast
steel wear plates are fitted facing compartment 2. lnside
the diaphragm are lifters that can be adjusted radially to
regulate the flow of cement into compartment 2.
Maintenance advantages
Maintenance of the Stanex is simple compared with
previous designs because it has no screening plate that
requires dismantling the diaphragm for replacement of a
worn plate. The grate plates facing compartment 1 as well
as the wear plate facing compartment 2 are easy to
replace with ordinary tools. When producing ordinary
Portland cement, the estimated service life of grate plates
facing compartment 1 is at least 18,000 hours while that
of wear plates facing compartment 2 is minimum 30,000
hours.
