READING. Choose the correct answer. (5 points)

Late-night TV host David Letterman has been described as an observational comic, famous for his wry comments on everyday life. Even as
a young child, Letterman had shown natural comedic abilities, entertaining family and friends in his home state of Indiana. Family has always been
important to Letterman. His father died when Letterman was twenty-seven. They had enjoyed a close relationship, and Letterman felt the loss deeply. To
this day, he remains very attached to the rest of his family. After getting his degree in radio and TV broadcasting at Ball State University, Letterman
worked as a TV announcer and radio talk-show host. Once he substituted for a television weatherman but left after only two weeks because he had
become bored and had started to draw objects in the clouds. He had even invented disasters in cities that didnt exist. Letterman was fired. The network
had not appreciated his creative reporting. In 1975, Letterman left for Los Angeles, armed with six TV comedy scripts he had written. No one was
interested in them. Letterman began performing at various comedy clubs. In 1977, he was hired as a writer and performer on a variety show. That same
year, he got divorced from his college sweetheart, to whom he had been married for nine years. Letterman continued doing stand-up comedy. Soon he
was discovered by one of Johnny Carsons talent scouts, who had seen him perform on the short-lived TV comedy, Mary. Carson, the king of latenight TV, first invited Letterman to appear on his program, the Tonight Show, in November 1978. Although Letterman had not done late-night TV

before, he quickly became Carsons most frequent guest host. Two years later, Letterman got his own show, which went on the air at 10:00 a.m.
although the show had gotten favorable reviews, it was canceled after only eighteen weeks. The ratings had not been high, perhaps because the
morning time slot was wrong for Lettermans kind of audience. In 1982, Letterman found the right show at the right timehis own Late Night with David
Letterman, directly following Carsons The Tonight Show developed between Letterman and his friend, comedian Jay Leno. By the time Carson
actually left, the struggle had grown to the point where it was dominating both entertainment and business news. Network TV had not seen anything like
it before. When NBC offered The Tonight Show to Leno, Letterman switched networks and went to CBS. He had made it clear to NBC that he would
accept nothing less than the job as host of The Tonight Show. Letterman signed a contract with CBS for a reported $ 14 million a year and got his own
show, The Late Show with David Letterman. I had come to terms with the idea of coming to CBS because I did not believe there was anything NBC
could do to keep me where I was, Letterman said during an interview. The Late Show plays opposite Lenos The Tonight Show and so far has gotten
higher ratingsgiving the last laugh to Letterman, after all.
