Tell us about something you wish you had done better.

I wish I had done more for my grandmother, more feedback and more company with her. But now I have no chance to compensate, because she passed away three years ago. I grew up in an incoherent family. I always felt cold when I stayed at home. There were too many sharp words and mean conversations between my family members. My grandmother was the only warm for me. She treated me as her another son. She took care of me when my parents left home. She always cooked my favorite food for me. She was so proud of me. She loved me more than loved my father and uncle. She even left her house for me after she died, because she knew Im going to miss her very much. However, after entering university, I spent most of my time on studying and playing. I nearly didnt accompany with her. I seldom went back even she called me back. When she was diagnosed having cancer, everything was too late. She passed away in few months. I repent that I should do more for her. I feel guilty that I always let her wait. After this experience, I appreciated the people love me or the people I love. I wish I will not let them down. I hope I can do more for them before everything is too late. Tell us about who you are. Knowing that we have already reviewed your previously submitted materials, what else would you like to let us know? I am an outgoing and active person when I was in college. I love to serve people and organize activities. In my junior year in college, I had been the vice president of Student Association in my department. We laid out many student activities. For instance, we launched open houses for several labs and institutes, connected alumni and invited them to give career talks. These activities benefited students. Some students found their academic interests and joined labs. Some students, with the encouragement of alumni, planned to take non-academic careers. We also served student outside the department. We hold an educational science camp for high school students. In the camp, we introduced some interesting physics, such as non-Newtonian liquids, to motive them go beyond textbooks. I felt great accomplishment in the camp, especially when I saw the smiles from those students they were happy and curious about why they did not sink into the non-Newtonian liquid. Besides, we also launched entertainments in the department, such as singing competition, sports tournaments. This serving experience delighted me and strengthened my passion for public affairs. Although Im a science major student and plan to take graduate study in applied math, I still expect myself to make some feedback to my country and the world. The Nobel Prize winner Yuan-Tseh Lee is my idol. He not only made great contribution in chemistry, but also devoted himself in

the reformation of education in my country. I wish I can also make great contribution, no matter to my country or to all human beings. In same year in college, I had been the captain of basketball team in the department. We owned great accomplishment in this year- the second place in the tournament of my university, the third place in national physics department competition. However, the most difficult part for me was not in the court. It was to keep teammates. Compared to other department teams, we had fewer players, so we had to fully involve in all teammates. When some players wanted to give up, I had to encourage them. When our super stars in team complained about other players, I had to calm them down and asked them to be more patient. When some players skipped the practice, I had to find out the reason and even give them some lessons. Hence, sometimes I had to be very harsh and sometimes be kind. Finally, I learned how to communicate with various people. I think this captain experience is beneficial to me. What is one interesting or fun fact about yourself that you like to share with your future AMSC classmates? The most interesting fact of me is that Im a BIG FAN of Kobe Bryant, one of the best NBA players of all time. I can describe all his great games in very detail, such as 81 points game, 62 points in 3 quarters, five consecutive games with 50 points and also the accomplishment he made in Lakers: 5 champions. I follow every game of Kobe Bryant: If Im free, I will watch whole game. If Im busy, I will at least follow the game highlights. I have collected a lot of Kobes posters in my room since I was young. I not only know a lot about Kobe but also about NBA. If I can join AMSC at University of Maryland and if there are some classmates are also interested in basketball, I will be very glad to share all I know about NBA. Furthermore, I know that University of Maryland owns a great basketball team. I wish my classmates and I can also be the fan of the Maryland team and cheer for them! Everyone around me knows that Im a big fan of Kobe Bryant and NBA. So they always like to question me: Which one is better, Michael Jordan, LeBron James or Kobe Bryant? Or they like to irritate me: Is Kobe Bryant selfish? He seldom passes the ball! I always answer their questions because I wish everyone knows how great Kobe is. Even now he is in rest due to the harsh injury on the ankle and knee, I still follow his news and I believe he will be back to court very soon. If I can join AMSC and if classmates talk about basketball, I think I will share all information about Kobe Bryant and I will be proud to tell them Im his big fan!

I wish I had done more for my grandmother, such as spending more time with her. I now have no chance to compensate because she passed away three years ago. I didn't grow up in a harmonic family. I often felt cold and isolated when I was at home since there were too many harsh words and mean conversations between my family members. My grandmother had been the only warm and comfort for me. She took good care of me when my parents were away from home, and she always prepared my favorite food. She treated me as her another son and even loved me more than she loved my father and uncle. Whenever I was with her, my grandmother made me feel like the center of the universe. She was always proud of my achievements from the bottom of her heart. However, after I entered college, I spent most of my time on studying and other extracurricular activities. I couldnt make time for my grandmother and seldom went to see her even if she called. When she was diagnosed of having cancer, I realized everything was too late. She passed away within few months. I repent that I should have done more for her, like sharing new college life with her. From this heartbreaking experience, I have learned to appreciate the people who love me and whom I love. I hope I will not let them down and can do more for them before it is too late. I am an outgoing and active person. I love to help other people and organize activities. In my junior year in college, I was the vice president of Student Association in my department and held many student activities. For instance, we launched open houses for several labs and institutes, contacted alumni and invited them to give career talks for undergraduate students. Through these events, a lot of students found their academic interests and joined labs, while the other students started to consider about non-academic careers with the encouragement of the alumni. We also provided learning environment for high school students by organizing educational science camp. During this five-day camp, we introduced interesting physics such as non-Newtonian liquids to motive the kids to reach beyond textbooks. I felt great accomplishment in the camp, especially when I saw the smiles from those students they were so excited when they found themselves standing, instead of sinking into the non-Newtonian liquid. That provoked their curiosity and urge to learn more. Besides academic events, we also arrange entertainments in the department, including singing competition and sports tournaments. These experiences delighted me and strengthened my passion for public affairs.

Although Im a science major student and plan to take graduate study in applied math, I still expect myself to make great contributions for my country or even all human beings around the world. When some players skipped the practice, I had to find out the reason and try to solve the problems. I learned how to communicate with various people and deal with different situations. This captain experience indeed meant a lot to me, for it not only helped me become a better basketball player, but more importantly, a better leader in a team.
