1. Application- a written request for admission to a college/institution 2. Masters degree- a degree awarded by a graduate school or department, usually to a person who has completed at least one year of graduate study. 3. Bachelors degree- a degree awarded by a college or university to a person who has completed undergraduate studies. (4 years) 4. Doctorate degree- The degree or status of a doctor as conferred by a university (4 years) 5. Associates degree- a degree granted especially by junior colleges after completion of two years of study. 6. SAT- the most widely used standardized test for college admissions. It covers three subject areas: critical reading, mathematics and writing 7. ACT- has a multiple choice section covering math, English, reading, and science. It also has an optional writing test in which examinees plan and write a short essay. 8. Alma Mater- the school, college, or university that one once attended 9. Credit- One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for 15 weeks in a semester or trimester program

Drop/Add Period A time when students may make changes in

their schedules. The Drop/Add period usually runs through the first week of the semester. 11. 12. Grade-Point Average (GPA) A students academic average. Prerequisite A course that must be successfully competed in

preparation for another, usually more advanced class.

Semester A term of the school year, approximately fifteen

weeks. 14. Transcript A list of the courses a student has taken and the

grades he or she has received in them. 15. 16. Drop- to quit taking a class before its finished Syllabus- A written outline of a particular course including the

requirements for the course. 17. Student loan- A loan offered to students which is used to pay

off education-related expenses, such as college tuition, room and board 18. Honors classes- An honors course is a class in which the most

advanced students are placed. Most students placed in honors courses are highly motivated and dedicated to their educational experience. 19. AP classes (Advanced placement)- college-level courses that a

student can take in high school.

Dental Admission Test (DAT)- a test that determines if you get

into dental school 21. 22. Major- chosen field of study Orthodontics- the straightening of the teeth using appliances

that put pressure on the teeth 23. Braces- A dental appliance, constructed of bands and wires

that is fixed to the teeth to correct irregular alignment. 24. Palate Expander- a device cemented to the roof of the mouth

that creates more space to straighten teeth through orthodontics 25. Retainer- a fixed or removable device worn in the mouth to hold

the teeth in their new position during the adaptive period after straightening appliances have been removed
