Asian MS is a national support group for Asians with MS, their carers, friends and family. We seek to increase awareness and dispel ignorance of MS in the Asian community, as well as put fun and dignity into the lives of Asians with MS and their carers. We also raise money for people affected by MS within the Asian community. We produce online and printed information in various languages and offer an interpreting service.

Equally important is that these items will help people who have disabilities due to conditions other than MS too. For example, for many people with MS balance is a typical problem. If you have balance issues then the chances are that you find walking difficult. You might have foot-drop or a hyperextending knee, or you may not be able to walk very far. Patrick writes articles about products that he has Patrick Burke, founder of Aid4Disabled discovered, such as the Patrick wanted to create something that filled a gap in MUSmate he uses for his own foot-drop, and why he finds them useful. In almost every case you can the market, as he felt that there was no central site that identifies products that would make life easier for then buy them for yourself. an active but disabled person; and so many people There are articles on items to help make your life with MS fall into this category. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR MEDICATIONS?

With so many new medications having been licensed recently to help to treat MS and its symptoms, and many more in the pipeline, it can be very daunting when youre faced with choosing which drug to take. So where do you start? According to a poll that was run on the Asian MS Facebook group, some of you turn to your healthcare providers when it comes to finding out information about drugs. Your neurologist and MS nurse are often a good first port of call because they know your medical history and are familiar with your symptoms and the type of MS that you have. They will also be aware of any other drugs that youre taking. However, ultimately it is up to you to decide whether you want to take a certain drug or not. So where else are you able to get information? The internet can be a great resource and there are several very good websites that offer detailed information about the various drugs available for people with MS. A selection of them can be found here: http://www.mssociety.org.uk http://www.mstrust.org.uk/atoz/drugs.jsp http://www.msdecisions.org.uk/ http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Multiplesclerosis/Pages/MedicineGuidePage.aspx http://multiple-sclerosisresearch.blogspot.co.uk/ Finally, it is important that you are comfortable with what you are taking. So if you have any doubts then do contact your neurologist or MS nurse. Youre not alone and its important to remember that! There are many things to consider when deciding whether to go onto medication and if you do, which medication to take. Efficacy, side effects, interactions with other drugs and contraindications if you have other medical conditions are all factors. That is why it is important to have detailed discussions with your health care professionals but it can also be useful to chat with other people who may be on those drugs. Online communities and forums are a fantastic way of reaching many people quickly. You can check some of them out here: Asian MS Facebook group ; Shift MS; MS Society forums ; This is MS
DONTT BELIEVE THE HYPE! According to a recent post on the MS Trust Blog, estimates suggest that over 90% of us find out about medical and health care developments from the media. However, most stories are likely to contain an element of spin, which distorts the story to achieve a specific aim. Therefore, it is important to look beyond the headlines and check out facts from reputable sources! For the full blog post, see: http://www.mstrust.org.uk/interactive/mstru st/2014/dont-believe-the-hype/

AYURVEDA AND MS by Kanti Khalidas

Does Ayurvedic treatment help to cure MS? Well most of the alternative medicine one tries is trial and error, with some possibly working directly and others just making you feel better. I was diagnosed with primary progressive MS in November 2009. I did not understand then what was to follow as I did not think at that time that these symptoms I had could turn into something so serious. I tried a number of conventional drugs to help with my walking and muscle spasms, however, none of them really worked for me. At one of my rehabilitation sessions, I was told to stop taking them regularly and take maybe one tablet as and when required. I was literally left in limbo! A friend, originally from Tamil Nadu in India, saw me struggling to walk when I met him in 2010. He suggested that I go to an Ayurveda clinic in Tamil Nadu and since 2010 I have been going there regularly. In Ayurveda, PPMS is referred to as Vatha Vikaram. Ayurveda treats this through oil treatment, Ayurvedic medicine, diet and timing of the night sleep and morning awakening. During my most recent trip, I started by having foundation treatment called Abhyangam for one week. This involved one therapist applying ayurvedic oil to the head and body. In the second and third week I had a treatment called Dhara & Pizichili, involving six therapists: four treating upper and lower body and two pouring cold oil on the forehead. Specific aims of AYURVEDA therapy in MS Control of disease progression and sustaining the positive changes that are acquired during the time of treatment To enable the patient to lead a normal life
Page 6

During the fourth week I had full body Navarakizhi, which is the application of warm pouches of milk and rice. The fifth week is the detox program, with three small enemas and two large ones in the therapy room. In 2012 the Chief Medical Officer felt my pulse, looked at my tongue and finger nails and told me that that my MS had stopped progressing. This was confirmed by an MRI scan in August 2013, which showed no disease progression. It is difficult to keep up with the Ayurvedic regime all the time, as one needs to change a whole lifestyle. The process is slow, however, in my experience it gives one a better and normal life. You can find out more about Ayurveda on Wikipedia and the NCCAM website

Taking on this challenge is the best way I can think of to give something back. Cover with a lid, reduce the heat to low and cook for 40-45 minutes or until the chops are tender. -Uncover the pan and finally turn up the heat to reduce the gravy to a rich, thick sauce. Add the chopped green coriander, stir, and serve either with naan or rice.

Lubna, an Asian MS member since 2005, has been kindly sharing her delicious recipes with Asian MS. She was diagnosed with MS following an MRI scan in 1991, with symptoms having included optic neuritis and fatigue. While she feels that shes slowed down a great deal as shes grown older, she is still able-bodied and considers herself to be very lucky. She joined Asian MS after she met Shiv (Asian MS Treasurer) at MS National Centre. He was the first Asian person that shed met who also had MS. She has previously served on the Asian MS committee.

Would you be interested in becoming a regional contact for Asian MS? Wed love to hear from you as we want to build a network of support for Asian MSers around the country. Please contact us at asianms@mssociety.org.uk for further information.

FUNDRAISING FOR ASIAN MS

Where do the funds go? Asian MS is funded purely by donations, which are used for various purposes. They include holding information and social events, contributions to research projects, and administration costs. The Amiloride and Phenytoin projects Asian MS has donated 1,500 to the Amiloride and Phenytoin projects, both of which are drugs that are being tested in clinical trials for use in MS. Amiloride is a high blood pressure and congestive heart failure treatment that has been in use for over 30 years. It could also have a neuroprotective and myeloprotective effect. Phenytoin is an epilepsy drug that has been in use for over 60 years. It is being tested to see if it can protect the optic nerve in people with optic neuritis and, therefore, prevent nerve damage in MS.

Asian MS are proud to announce that they now have the facilities to allow people to make donations in an easier and quicker way.
