& Hygiene Programme

SEVENTY-THREE per cent of the 13 million Zambian population live below the poverty line. Only one-third of the rural population has access to safe water and about 13 per cent have access to improved sanitation facilities. The unsafe water sources and low number of sanitary facilities are among the major health problems facing the country today. The use of contaminated water sources and the improper disposal of human waste lead to high incidences of water-related diseases particularly diarrhoea, cholera and trachoma which in turn lead to high infant mortality rates in rural areas. In order to help the Zambian government address the aforementioned problems, World Vision has embarked on a multimillion dollar water programme called Zambia Water Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (ZWASH). The water programme is implemented in the six provinces. These are Southern, Western, Lusaka, Eastern, Central and Northern provinces. The ZWASH programme is undertaking interventions focused on addressing the critical challenges for achieving sustainable development by providing safe drinking water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education in 16 Area Development Programmes, thus contributing to Millennium Development Goal seven which targets at halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.
The goal of the ZWASH is to contribute to the improved health, nutrition, education, and well-being of 301,250 people, including 100,000 children, living in 16 Area Development Programs (ADPs) through improved access to safe, sustainable supplies of potable water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene education by 2015. The programme seeks to increase the access to safe water from an average of 59 to 80 per cent to between 13 to 25 per cent. The ZWASH programme will benefit over 600,000 people who live in the targeted ADPs as through reduced demand on existing safe water sources and improved sanitation and hygiene among their neighbours.
