Lions Club Student of the Month
Each month we recognize a Lions Club Student of the Month. The student must be a senior, role model for others and someone that has contributed to the high school in a variety of ways. We attempt to select students that are not usually recognized and since we are allowed only eight seniors per year, it is imperative that we select confident, creditable ambassadors.

Grand Ledge High School District Band Festival

On Friday, February 28, the Grand Ledge High School Bands performed at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) District 8 Band and Orchestra festivals held at Okemos High School. Each ensemble was assessed in their concert performance by a panel of three adjudicators, with an additional adjudicator who evaluated each band in sight-reading. The categories assessed included tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, and interpretation, and the bands were each given a rating, ranging from 1 to 5, with a Division 1 (superior) rating being the highest. All three Grand Ledge High School bands received a Division One rating, The Concert Band repertoire included: Normandy Beach, by John Edmundson; Thus Spoke the Raven, by Gary Fagan; and, Joy!, by Frank Ticheli, and they received 10 "A" grades and 7 "A-" grades, and 3 B+ grades from the adjudication panel The Symphony Band performed Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, by John Philip Sousa; And the Antelope Play, by John Carnahan; and Havendance, by David Holsinger. The Symphony Band received 15 "A" grades, 4 "A-" grades, and 1 B+ grade from the panel. Finally, the Wind Symphony program included: The Purple Carnival, by Harry Alford; Paris Sketches, by Martin Ellerby; and Postcard, by Frank Ticheli, and they received 12 "A+" grades, and 8 A grades. The Wind Symphonys performance received high praise from their adjudicators. The GLHS Bands next performance will be their spring concert on May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the GLHS Auditorium.

GLPS TOWN HALL MEETING

Grand Ledge Public Schools will be holding a Town Hall meeting in the High School Auditorium on Thursday, April 17th, from 6:00-8:00pm. Parents are free to attend and arrive on time.

2014 Yearbook Release Party

The 2014 yearbook will be distributed at the yearbook signing party on May 22 in the cafeteria. Seniors can enter at 4 p.m. and everyone else can enter at 5 p.m. The ending time is 6 p.m. If the student cannot pick up their yearbook on May 22 during the release party, they may pick their books up at lunch of after school only after May 23 in room 113. Contact Mrs. Badalamente with questions badalamentes@glcomets.net. More details to come as the event approaches. There are still "extra" yearbooks available to be pre-ordered. Please bring $75 cash or check (made out to GLHS) to room 113 to Mrs. Badalamente to get on the list.

VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

The Ethel J Armeling Scholarship Vocal Competition was held at the MSU School of Music on Sunday, March 16. Ten singers from the Lansing area were chosen to perform, four of them being GLHS choir students. Alex Holly, George Marshall, Rachel Rayl and Matt Wilcox performed for the scholarship. Rachel Rayl was chosen as the 2nd place winner, earning a $500 scholarship! Congratulations to all of these singers.

Physical Education Program

The PE program could use gym shorts and old baseball gloves donated. Donations can be dropped off in the Athletic Office at the high school, just down the hall from the Library.

Grand Ledge High School is now a Labels for Education School! You can help Grand Ledge High School earn free merchandise simply by collecting Labels for Education participating product UPCs and beverage/sauce caps! Please turn in any UPCs and caps to the box in the main office. For a complete list of participating products, please visit the Labels for Education website.

Tri-Countys Got Talent Show

The talent show will be held at DeWitt High School on April 26th. The show celebrates Alcohol Awareness Month!

Calculators are available for checkout from the Math Intervention Center. Scientific calculators are free and only require a parent signature. Graphing calculators are available for a $20 deposit and a $10 rental fee. The deposit is returned when the graphing calculator is returned. Checkout forms are available outside room 315.

Spring Dress Code Reminders

Any clothing that exposes bare skin (as described below) may not be worn. Such clothing that exposes bare skin is distracting in a school setting. Clothing that is distracting, may include, but not be limited too, items such as see through garments, halters, backless dresses or tops, tube tops, bare midriff tops, short shorts or short skirts, etc. Cover-up clothing such as jackets, coats, and sweaters worn over such apparel may also be deemed inappropriate for school. Exposed cleavage is not acceptable. A good guideline for appropriate shorts/skirts length is past the fingertips when arms are extended down; however, staff may still determine the item inappropriate for school.

Eleventh Annual Showcase of Music

Come one, come all to the eleventh annual Showcase of Music, April 2, 2014, 7:00 PM at the Grand Ledge High School Auditorium. The Showcase will feature musicians from our elementary, middle and high school general, choral and instrumental music programs. The Grand Ledge Music Booster Association, who financially supports music in all of our schools, sponsors the Showcase of Music. The concert is FREE, however, there is an opportunity to give a freewill donation to GLMBA at the door. Please join on Wednesday, April 2nd for the entertaining evening of music.

GRAND LEDGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PERFORM AT STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL

Charlotte, Michigan March 22, 2014 On Saturday, March 22, 2014, over 3,000 band and orchestra students from Michigan high schools performed at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Associations (MSBOA) State Solo and Ensemble Festival. The festival took place at eight locations around the state, including Charlotte High School where 32 events from Grand Ledge High School performed. These students were evaluated by adjudicators from around the state, in the areas of tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, and interpretation. The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade soloists were judged in three areas of proficiency: a prepared solo, five memorized scales, and sight-reading. The scores in each category are combined to give a total score of 85 to 100, resulting in a First Division (or Superior rating), or 70 to 84, resulting in a Second Division (or Excellent rating). Proficiency Three is a higher difficulty level than Proficiency Two, and Proficiency Two is more demanding than Proficiency One. Nicholas Osborn, Trevor Spitzley, Jonah Weller, and Andrew Zakerski were all selected to be members of these two elite groups. In addition, the Chamber Woodwind Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, and Trombone Quartet were selected as Outstanding Ensembles by their State adjudicators. Finally, Grand Ledge High School was fortunate to have Jonah Weller recognized as Outstanding Soloist by his adjudicator. Jonah, as well as, the Chamber Woodwind Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, and Trombone Quartet now have the opportunity to perform as part of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, held on the campus of Western Michigan University, May 8 10, 2014.
