Get excited about volunteering at the Zoo in a whole new way! Have you ever wanted to learn
about caring for endangered and exotic wildlife? Are you interested in spending part of your
summer with some of the coolest animals around? If you answered Yes! to one or both of these
questions, then the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is the place for you! You will experience the
Zoo from an entirely different angle that very few people get the opportunity to encounter. You
will make friends that share your passion for wildlife and other similar interests. You will gain
first-hand knowledge of various Zoo careers and build a good work ethic while simultaneously
earning community service hours for school!
We are looking to assemble a robust crew of teens that are dedicated, hard-working,
responsible and dont mind getting dirty. These individuals must also enjoy learning new things
and creating memorable experiences for our many guests with their enthusiastic and outgoing
personalities!
Please read the following material thoroughly before submitting your application.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants Must:
Be between the ages of 14 and 17 and have completed the 8th grade by the summer of
2014.
Be truly interested in making volunteering a top priority for your entire enrollment in
the program.
Be willing to make a ONE YEAR COMMITMENT to the Zoo.
Understand that we expect you to work. You are here to actively and responsibly assist
the Zoo and its staff with whatever task is asked of you. This is NOT just the chance to
fulfill your community service requirement.
**ZooTeens! is a very competitive program. (There is limited space available each year and
not all applicants will be interviewed.)**
IF SELECTED
Teen Must:
Pay non-refundable tuition fee of $60.00. This covers the cost of a volunteer t-shirt and
name badge (part of required uniform), training materials and program and social event
supplies. Please DO NOT send tuition fee with your application.
Provide proof of negative Tuberculosis (PPD type) reading by June 2, 2014.
Complete Level 2 Background check with finger prints (information will be provided).
Only required for teens assisting with Summer Camp.
Report to work on time and adhere to our ZooTeens! Involvement Contract.
Commit to ONE YEAR of consistent service: 3 consecutive weeks during the summer on
a Monday through Friday schedule and two (2) special events each month during the
school year. This is a commitment that includes you and your family. They are
committing to providing you with the support, encouragement, and transportation that it
takes to successfully complete the program.
Attend one night of each session of the mandatory* orientation/training process.

* Absence from the interviews or mandatory trainings (for vacations, school commitments, etc.) is not allowed
except in extreme extenuating circumstances (e.g. sudden illness, car accident, etc.) and only provided that the
Volunteer Office is notified of the extenuating circumstance in a timely manner (preferably before the training).

*As a ZooTeens! Summer Camp Assistant you will have the opportunity to interact with the
future zoo keepers of the world in a classroom setting. You will assist our Education staff with
general classroom duties (and learn about some of our animal ambassadors in the process),
positively interact with our campers, and be an outstanding role model that will encourage
others to follow in your ZooTeens! steps!
*As a ZooTeens! Interpretation Assistant you will get the opportunity to learn about several
species of animals that we house within our Zoo. You can share what youve learned with many
of our visiting guests and create an educational and memorable experience. You will explore
many topics and exhibits on your daily journey. You might just learn why a giraffe has two
different colors on its tongue or why giant anteaters walk on their knuckles!

**We ask ZooTeens! to schedule around family vacations and school commitments. You will be
allowed two (2) excused absences during the summer if Volunteer Services receives prior
notification in a timely manner. Excused absences include illness, injury, death in the family,
etc.**
**There are no weekend shifts available with the exception of special events.**
