Course Description: This coursework provides you with an opportunity to hone your management skills further. The knowledge from various courses in finance, marketing, management and operations will be assimilated and utilized throughout the coursework. Policy creation requires one to draw from various experiences and knowledge learnt over a period of time; therefore this course will round up the skill sets of potential/future senior managers. Course objectives: The course is designed to give a broad overview of the concepts and applications of strategic management essentially required to effectively steer the course of business enterprises in a rapidly changing environment. My efforts will be directed at imparting the concepts and applications of Strategic Management as thoroughly as possible. Your efforts should be aimed at absorbing the maximum amount of knowledge so that you may develop into effective Strategic Business Managers. Advance preparation/reading is an essential prerequisite for good class performance. Also, to acquire a secure hold on the concepts discussed in class, I advise about 2 to 3 hours of study on a daily basis. It is hoped that this requirement will be fulfilled voluntarily and willingly to make the most efficient use of the resources you are devoting to this class. Students must learn to fulfill their part of the responsibility diligently so that they may justifiably command value for their time and money.

Course Format: The format of the course will be two lectures a week; each session will include Article Presentations, Theory discussions and Case Studies. Readings are expected to be completed for each class. Note: 1. Case Study will be provided prior to the next class. 2. A project on Non-Profit Organization has to be submitted before 1st Midterm Exam. 3. After 1st Midterm Exam a Logic Frame Analysis (LFA) has to be submitted.

Grading Plan/Performance Evaluations: Your course grade will be based on the following components and marks allocation: Two Midterms (First and Second) Final Examination Class participation/Article Presentation Term Report/ Presentation Quizzes/Written case assessment 30 30 15 15 10

The Approach to Teaching/Learning: 1. Lectures by the instructor 30% of in-class hrs.

2. Practicing the tasks of managerial analysis and decisionmaking via use of actual case studies-45% of in-class hrs. analysis/discussion by whole class (students do most of the talking) 3. Article Session 25% of in-class hrs.

Term Report: Please strictly follow the instructions given below. This is being done to remove ambiguities at the outset and to caution you about the mistakes students tend to commit. 1. Term report is a very essential, rather crucial requirement of this course and any attempt at cutting corners will be closely monitored and penalized, students are advised to put in required inputs in terms of time and attention in meeting this very important aspect of hits course requirement. All students are required to write a 30 to 35 (double spaced) page Term report on an organization in Pakistan. The report should be free from typographical errors. The Term report along with appendices will be submitted in original (that is, as it comes off the typewriter or the PC printer). Non-compliance with this case will not get you a passing grade on the Term report/ You are required to inform the instructor about the name of the organization you will be writing on by 3rd session. The contents of the case should include, but should not be limited by the following: Executive Summary Industry Overview Industry Attractiveness Comparative Position of Key Firms in the Industry Value Chain Analysis of selected Competitors Financial Analysis/ Drivers SWOT Analysis Strategic Initiatives-Corporate/Business Strategy Implementation The Term report will be due before final exam without fail.

IBA also has a very strict guideline on plagiarism; please read the sections on plagiarism in the IBA student handbook. To avoid penalties your report you should provide sources of authors, books, websites, journals, articles and other sources. The methods of referencing such as (APA, Harvard, Oxford, and so on) will be provided in due course of time. Class Participation: Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and presentations. Your knowledge and practical experience will add to the quality of learning throughout the course term. IBA Attendance Policy: IBA has a culture of strict discipline therefore students should follow the student handbook on attendance. It is expected that students will attend classes regularly; the allowed number of absences are also provided in the prospectus/student handbook and the purpose of these absences is to facilitate students in case of emergencies/unavoidable circumstances. Otherwise all classes should be attended.
