The month of April is known for being wet, but this particu-
lar April, Delran is going to be plunged all the way under the
sea when the Delran Middle School Drama Department debuts
its spring musical
The Little Mermaid
Jr.
Director and music
teacher Kathy Dra-
chowski, along with
her co-director and fel-
low music teacher
Erin Gupta, said the
show presents a time-
less story and works
well for middle school
students because
theyre still at an age
where theyre excited
by Disney movies.
We just thought
that it would be a good
choice for the kids that
we have in our pro-
gram something fun
that would draw a lot of
excitement and give
kids a lot of opportuni-
ty to be involved in the-
ater and be motivating to their age, Drachowski said.
Perhaps no student is more excited for the show than sev-

Green Team plans to
establish food bank
At the meeting held on the
evening of Wednesday, March 19
at the township building, the
Green Team continued work on
action items for the year.
First item on the agenda was
the establishment of a food bank
in the township. This particular
type of food bank is different
from others in that it involves
only vegetables green fresh veg-
etables that are "leftover" vegeta-
bles from residents gardens that
would otherwise be just thrown
away because they could not eat
everything they grew that day.
The items would be picked up
within the township and taken to
a designated area, possibly the
municipal building or another
designated area in the township.
This effort avoids waste. By the
end of the day, those green items
that would otherwise have been
wasted would be given to the
needy and even to others who
simply would like to have
some fresh locally grown vegeta-
bles.
This concept is based on the
successful nationwide program
called Ample Abundance.
In other actions, the Green
Team decided to extend its Earth
Day activities until April 30.
Regular meetings are now
scheduled for the second Wednes-
day of every month to be held at
the municipal building.

ran.green@gmail.com. On Face-
book go to green team.

Engineer, team recognized
for their ongoing roadwork
Burlington County Freeholder
Deputy Director Joe Howarth rec-
ognized the ongoing work of
county engineer Joe Brickley and
his team dedicated to improving
pothole and road conditions
throughout the county as part of
the board of chosen freeholders
three point countywide emer-
gency pothole mitigation plan.
With the severe winter having
taken a devastating toll on roads
throughout the area, county engi-
neer Joe Brickley and his team
have worked tirelessly to tackle
this enormous undertaking,
Howarth said. While the work is
not over, their efforts have al-
ready gone a long way in effec-
tively improving road conditions
throughout the county.
As the first point of the pothole
mitigation plan, Brickley was
tasked with leading a team to
oversee and implement an ag-
gressive countywide pothole re-
pair effort. This team has worked
to identify significant problem
areas and manage repair opera-
tions to ensure that road condi-
tions are improved as promptly
as is possible.
One of the teams objectives
was to improve and streamline
the system for reporting potholes
and damaged road conditions. To
this end a Burlington County pot-
hole hotline has been established
and can be reached at (609) 265-
5021. As part of his update to the
freeholders, Brickley reported
that this hotline has been success-
ful in helping to better identify,
prioritize and promptly address
problem areas.
Brickley reported to the free-
holder board that as of March 24,
county road crews have repaired
more than 1,200 potholes.

Delran Fire Co. 2 is on its way
to officially establishing an auxil-
iary to grow community involve-
ment and support the station, ac-
cording to Madelyn Radano, aux-
iliary chairwoman and
spokesperson for the group.
Basically, were looking to
help the station anyway we can,
Radano said.
Radano said various people
had talked about the idea of an
auxiliary at Delran Fire Co. 2 for
awhile, but the Dietz & Watson
warehouse and distribution cen-
ter fire in Delanco last September
was one of the bigger catalysts
for moving forward with the or-
ganization.
Many of those fighting the fire
didnt have enough access to an-
cillary supplies such as food and
bottles of water to drink, and
once the massive fire was con-
tained, there were numerous
pieces of equipment to clean.
The Dietz & Watson fire was a
big eye opener, Radano said. A
fire doesnt end at the scene.
Radano said the idea for the
auxiliary was officially presented
at the last station meeting, so the
auxiliary wont be technically of-
ficial until the next meeting.
However, she said the response
from those interested in joining
or supporting the organization
has already been great.
Weve gotten quite a few appli-
cations already, Radano said.
For not being official, its a great
start.
The response has also been
positive from the various station
members.
They are thrilled, Radano
said. They seem to be for it and
they like the idea of it. Theyre
excited.
Radano also notes that the
group is just an auxiliary, not
specifically a ladies auxiliary, and
since there are women fire mem-
bers, the group is open to hus-
bands and boyfriends as well. As
an auxiliary, the group will also
operate under department guide-
lines.
Were not a ladies auxiliary,
Radano said. Were under all the
same guidelines as the depart-
ment. Well have to take CPR and
basic training courses.
The group has some tentative
ideas for the future, such as baby-
sitting training seminars and a
Coach Bingo event, but as a cur-
rent fundraising operation, the
station is already underway in
hosting an Easter Flower Sale at
Station 2 on Chester Avenue.
The station is taking pre-sale
reservations for flowers through
Saturday, April 5, and those or-

T
he states of Colorado and
Washington legalized marijua-
na for recreational purposes in
2012. Could New Jersey be next?
State Sen. Nicholas Scutari is hop-
ing that it will. This week, he is sched-
uled to formally present a bill that
would legalize marijuana in the state
and tax it heavily. His bill would be
modeled after those in Washington
and Colorado, which earned $2 million
in the first month of sales last year.
Scutaris bill plans to tax and regu-
late marijuana much like alcohol, and
he estimates that New Jersey could
earn $100 million per year in revenue
from weed tax.
Anybody that looks at the facts
knows that the war on marijuana has
been a miserable failure, Scutari said
in a press release. Were not delusion-
al about how simple the effort would
be, but I think from a standpoint of
moving this state and this country for-
ward on its archaic drug laws, I think
its a step in the right direction.
From a purely financial perspective,
legalizing marijuana makes sense.
While $100 million may seem like an
inflated number, its probably not out
of the realm of possibility. New Jersey
had 2 million more residents than
Washington as of the 2010 Census and
3.7 million more than Colorado.
Much like alcohol consumption and
gambling, if people are going to par-
take in the practice of smoking mari-
juana, why not reap the benefits of
taxing the substance while at the
same time avoiding the cost of polic-
ing against it?
From an operational standpoint,
New Jersey has two other states to
model its plan after, plus many other
states in the U.S. that have decriminal-
ized the possession of marijuana for
recreational use. The Garden State has
also already legalized its use for med-
ical purposes.
People are also behind its legaliza-
tion. Lake Research Partners released
a poll last year that said 59 percent of
Jersey voters would support a bill
such as this, and an October Gallup
poll said 58 percent of Americans are
in favor of marijuana legalization.
But then, of course, comes the
curveball emotion, morality and ex-
ample.
Just because people do it doesnt
make it right. And just because states
can legalize and tax marijuana doesnt
mean they should.
What example does legalizing mari-
juana set for our children? How far
will we go just to make, or save, a
buck? Or are we just being too prudish
about this weed thing?
Puff, puff, pass ... on lower taxes?
Should New Jersey give green light to legal marijuana? Its an interesting case

enth grader Sophia Chascsa, who is playing
the lead role of Ariel the mermaid. She said
Ariel is her favorite Disney princess, and
when she learned she got the part, she was
shocked and honored.
Ariel is my favorite princess, Chascsa
said. So of course I love to play her, and
its just fun being a Disney character. You
can make the character so alive. Its just so
cool.
Chascsa said shes even been using the
musicals song Part of Your World in past
auditions for projects such as community
theater and commercials, and its details
like that which make her and her fellow
performers come alive and worth seeing by
an audience.
They should come see this because this
show is just so different, Chascsa said.
The costumes, everything is just so awe-
some. And the people in it are amazing, so
very talented. Everyone just really brings
this show alive.
Also bringing the show alive through his
character is seventh grader Tati White who
is playing Sebastian the crab. White said
Sebastian is the part he wanted to play be-
cause he and the character share so many
similarities.
He really is me in a sense, White said.
Were so much alike, and I know that
sounds weird, but the whole musical aspect
of it were the same and were very ani-
mated. Theres no other word for it. I can
live through his character and be him.
However, not all students are playing
roles that reflect their true personalities.
One such case is seventh grader Rose
Lloyd, who is playing the shows main an-
tagonist, Ursula the sea witch.
Lloyd said evil roles are an acting chal-

lenge, but its fun to interact in
such a different way with her
friends on stage and discover the
character and turn into someone
who is the exact opposite of her.
The antagonizing roles are al-
ways my favorite, Lloyd said. I
personally think that its more fun
to be the evil role. Its a challenge,
but its a challenge Im willing to
take.
Drachowski said what the stu-
dents have been learning, even
more so than their choreography
and songs, is to really become in-
vested in the quality and success
of the show as a whole.
Theyve gone from just being
excited about the show to taking
responsibility for their show,
Drachowski said. Theyve
worked really hard to put it to-
gether themselves. They know its
their show.
Even the students who arent
playing the roles they originally
auditioned for have become in-
vested in their parts. One such
student is seventh grader Janine
Hickey who thought she would
play Flounder the fish, but at her
callback was cast as Scuttle the
seagull.
I was kind of nervous, Hick-
ey said. I was expecting to por-
tray a fish, not a bird. I was very
shocked to see that they suggested
me for this part, and Im glad they
thought that high of me to trying
something new.
The student that did want to
play Scuttle, seventh grader Kevin
Brown, was eventually cast as
Prince Eric. Brown said he could
relate to playing Eric because hes
a fun character that would rather
live his life out at sea than be a
prince.
I feel like I do a pretty good job
playing him, Brown said. I can
kind of relate almost, because Im
not really that big of a fan of
going with everybody else and the
flow. Id rather sometimes do my
own thing.
Drachowski said the enthusi-
asm shared by the other students,
regardless of their part or place
in the show, is going to make the
show successful.
The closer you get to the show,
the more the excitement builds,
Drachowski said. They thrive off
that feeling, off of the adrenalin
of getting ready to perform.
Theyre just doing an amazing
job.

Radano said the auxiliary also
wanted to provide a special for
families with children so the chil-
dren could give flowers to their
moms. As such, there will be
three for $12 specials and larger
potted Easter lilies and potted Hy-
drangeas.
The group will also be holding
a fundraiser on Saturday, April 5

Radano said her husband is a
member of the station and her

shes glad she can spend more

tion.
Our mission statement is to

APRIL 28, 2014 THE DELRAN SUN 11
igation plan, the board of chosen
freeholders authorized a shared
services agreement with the
Burlington County Bridge Com-
mission allowing for the utiliza-
tion of its emergency repair con-
tractor, AP Construction. AP Con-
struction has been responsible for
the milling and paving of areas in
which the damage was more sig-
nificant and extended beyond the
capability for patching, instead
requiring sub base repairs.
Finally, in an effort to address
the widespread pothole issues
and to prevent further degrada-
tion of existing potholes, the
board of chosen freeholders ap-
proved an additional shared serv-
ices program, which offered free
pothole mitigation materials,
known as cold patch, to munici-
palities willing to assist with the
filling of potholes on county
roads.
Brickley reported that with the
help of these shared services
121,000 square feet, or approxi-
mately three acres, of roads
throughout the county have al-
ready been repaired.
While we at the county will
continue to aggressively address
and improve road conditions, we
have found that an all hands on
deck approach in collaboration
with our municipalities and the
bridge commission has been ef-
fective in best serving our resi-
dents and repairing these issues
as quickly as possible, Howarth
said.
Burlington County maintains
508 miles of centerline roads.
Since December, road crews have
used approximately 170 tons of
cold patch and more than 240 tons
of hot mixed asphalt.
