When it comes to determination, Diana Haggerty is a prime example of how hard work translates into success. She tirelessly teaches her first-graders how to read, write and think, and her innovative instruction has helped her students show tremendous growth in math and reading. But Haggerty doesnt stop there. In her free time outside of the classroom, she keeps going, training for multiple marathons many of which she has won first place for her age bracket. Her warm and inviting nature, involvement with vital organizations such as School Community Council and Building Leadership Team, and strong work ethic are just a few of the reasons why Mrs. Haggerty is Draper Elementarys 2014 Teacher of the Year.

We are so exited for the installation of a new sign and electronic marquee at Draper Elementary! Thanks to the generosity of a parent donor, we were able to update our signage, including a digital reader board. The installation should be completed by April 4. Watch our school Facebook page for photos of the completed project.

Starting today, there is a temporary trail detour on the Willow Creek Trail. Draper City and Beehive Excavating have developed a safe detour to accommodate foot traffic on the trail during the process of construction for Greenwood III subdivision. A fenced trail will safely direct trail users around the construction site.!

Spring is in the air! Its always good to have daylight last longer, to hear birds chirping, smell the fresh rain, and see spring flowers beginning to pop up! These all are sure signs of spring. In April and May we have multiple opportunities for involvement and participation at our school. Beginning April 7, all 3rd-5th grade students will begin taking Utahs Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence (SAGE) testing. Testing and make-up days run from April 7-May 23. Please make sure you child is on time to school, has plenty of sleep, and eats a healthy breakfast. All of our students and teachers have learned and worked diligently this school year. We want our students to be able to show what they know. Art and music education is very dear to my heart. Research shows that students involved in these activities tend to have higher rates of success in academics and behavior. We are currently learning about the Baroque and Rococo periods in our Arts Through the Ages lessons. Thank you to our volunteers and Specials aides that help make these art lessons possible! Our spring musical, The Princess and the Pea, will be presented on April 8 at 7 p.m. We also have several students participating in the district Film Festival on April 10 and our school film festival May 1. Mark you calendar for our orchestra concert, to be held on May 15. Literacy and math are often our most talked about subjects, but I want to emphasize that at Draper, your child is receiving an excellent Science and Social Studies education. Teachers are actively working with students to think scientifically and to understand our community and world as responsible citizens. Teachers expertly integrate science and social studies topics into all aspects of the curriculum, and our students participate in labs and field trips for hands-on learning of these topics. We are proud to announce that one of our students, 5th grader McKay Larson, has moved onto the state Science Fair competition! The next two months promise to be a continuation of rich learning experiences for our students. Thank you so much for being actively involved in your childs education. Together we are helping our students achieve their potential. !Piper Riddle, Principal

Beginning in April, students will take new, online tests required by the State Board of Education. The tests are called SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence), and will replace Utahs longstanding Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs). SAGE was designed to measure students understanding of the new Utah Core Standards in math and English language arts, as well as students understanding of Utah's Science Standards. SAGE more accurately measure the full range of student grade-level knowledge and skills. SAGE is not solely a multiple-choice test. SAGE requires students to write, construct math equations, build graphs, and even conduct experiments on the computer. These tasks require students to apply knowledge consistent with Utah's new standards.

Were proud to fly the American flag in front of our school. The red, white and blue of Old Glory waving in the wind reminds us of the freedoms that we cherish as citizens of this great country. We thank our soldiers, both past and present, for fighting for these freedoms. This month, during the Month of the Military Child, we honor and recognize the courage of the children whose parents are in the U.S. Armed Forces. We recognize that life in a military family isnt always easy. With every move, the children must become part of a new school community with new teachers, friends and neighbors. We welcome these families to Draper Elementary, and want them to know they are an important part of our school. To honor their sacrifices, this month we have planned to write and send thank you notes to our service men and women. We encourage you to talk to your children about the importance of supporting the families in our community whose loved ones are fighting for our freedoms.

Its almost time for another time out (Spring Break, April 14-18) to spend quality time with our friends and family and then back in the game to help our students reach their full potential at school! Watch for a parent survey this month, your input is valued and appreciated! Please consider volunteering three or more hours at Draper Elementary this school year if you are able and havent already! Thank you to the volunteers for all that you do, your time and efforts are greatly appreciated! As parents, volunteers, teachers and staff, I think we make a pretty great T.E.A.M.! !Kerri Brown, 2013-14 PTA President draperelementarypta@gmail.com
