Selkirk Wilderness Skiing
Closes for Season
April 15, 2014
On Tuesday, April 15, Selkirk Wilderness Skiing Limited will
close for its thirty-ninth season on Meadow Mountain. Te signs,
which have been in place since mid-December, will be removed
April 15, except for signage restricting access throughout and
around the lodge site. Tis winter marks the thirty-ninth anni-
versary of the Meadow Mountain Signage Plan: a community and
government sanctioned agreement which provides a legal closure
of the skiing terrain tendered to Selkirk Wilderness by the Prov-
ince of British Columbia. Over the past three months we have
received good cooperation from local snowmobilers, skiers, and
snowboarders. Te compliance with the signs has been greatly ap-
preciated; it is critical to our continued operation and to the safety
of our guests and of public users of Meadow Mountain. We hope
that our remaining few weeks of operation will bring continued
support for the agreement.

(sixty-six singers, three hundred and sixty degrees) at
Touchstones Nelson on Saturday, April 12. Corazn, Nel-
sons celebrated 66-member youth choir, age range 13 to
21, will encircle the interior of Gallery A and perform
four pieces. You, the listeners, will not be seated like an
audience but will stand or wander in the middle as the
singers perform all around you.
Corazns director, Allison Girvan, has chosen colour-
ful, dramatic music to highlight the extraordinary acous-
tics of the gallery. Te singers will perform the same
twenty-minute show fve times, for a new audience each
time. Touchstones current exhibit, Found: Te Art of Re-
Use will provide a provocative backdrop for the perform-
ance.
Now in its third year, this annual choral experience
in the gallery is already becoming legendary. Last years
performances sold out early and received ecstatic reviews

Jack was born on March 23, 1954 in
South Slocan where he grew up.
He met and married Val, the love of his life
on March 17, 1978. Jack was employed in the forest industry. He was a
tree faller for 38 years, working mainly in the Castlegar and Salmo area.
His memory will be cherished by everyone who knew his boundless
generosity, selfessness, and great sense of humour. Jack was devoted to
his family - always thinking of others before himself. He loved his job as
a tree faller and was also an excellent handyman. Jack enjoyed sports,
hiking, 4-wheeling and spending lots of time with his family. He also
loved God and cherished his church family.
Jack went home to Jesus on December 12, 2013 after battling cancer
for three years. He is survived by his wife Valerie; his son Aaron (Dawn)
and his daughter Stacy Lavediere (Joel); his brothers Stan, Bill, Ted, and
sisters Violet (Peter) and Sheri (Ralph).
There will be a Celebration of Life at Kinnaird Park Community Church in
Castlegar on April 12 at 2 pm. Jacks family would like to thank all of you
for your support in many diferent ways through this time.

Glasses For GWEN
Te SCSU Rotaract Club (Rotary-In-Action) started
in October 2012 with a small group in Selkirk College.
Last April the SCSU Rotaract Club put on a party at the
Element to raise money for Life Straws. Life Straws are
portable reusable water fltration devices. Tey sent the
devices overseas to an area where clean drinking water is
sparse. Now they are putting on another fundraiser at the
Element Bar and Grill and decided to donate the money
locally. Tis year they will be donating to Gwen, a project
that donates supplies to seniors. Te event is called Glasses
for Gwen and will be held on Friday, April 11. Doors open
at 10 pm. Tis is a dance party with a theme. Te theme is
Beauty and the Geek. So come dressed up as beauties or

How To Plant And Rake
Without Te Ache
Winter takes a toll on your garden, but spring takes a
toll on the gardener. Gardening season and back pain
ofen go hand in hand, but positioning your body correct-
ly reduces the strain on muscles and joints. Use these tips
to enjoy your garden to the fullest throughout the season:
Alternate your tasks. Switch between heavy chores such
as digging and lighter, less physically demanding tasks
such as planting.
Do the scissors when you rake. Stand with one leg for-
ward and one leg back when you rake. Switch legs and
hands every few minutes.
Kneel to plant and weed. Constant bending can put
strain on your back, neck, leg muscles and joints, so
kneeling is recommended. Use kneepads or a kneeling
mat (with handles) to minimize the amount of bending
required, and to make kneeling more comfortable. Keep
your back straight.
Change positions frequently. Make a point of changing
position every 10 to 15 minutes. Move from kneeling to
standing, from planting to digging.
Pace yourself. A minimum of three brief breaks each
hour is recommended. Take a few moments to move
around, stretch your muscles, have a drink or simply sit
and relax. Spread the work over several days - you will still
achieve the same great results.
