April 1, 2014 Director of Human Resources Sherry Napolitan United Methodist Family Services 3900 West Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 23230
Dear Sherry Napolitan: This application serves to apply for the Part-Time Mentor (PRN) position in South Hill. I hold a Masters in Social Work degree, and I have experience working with youth court-ordered to participate in substance abuse services. I offer maturity, dependability, trustworthiness, compassion, and passion in delivering comprehensive services and crisis intervention. It has been several years since I worked directly with youth. After receiving the MSW degree in 1999, I utilized my social work education and skills in the mission field. I found a natural ability to function efficiently in other cultures where other languages were spoken. Secondly, the Strength-Based perspective was my approach in working with people living in poverty. I am called to teach and model Gods promises to youth and their families. I offer a commitment to collaboration with professionals, families, and youth in implementing service plans. I spent time counseling an adolescent female who was at risk of being placed in foster care. She was able to remain in her home as a result the discussions we had about her situation. I worked extensively with a family composed of single mom and three teenage daughters who each became pregnant. I was able to refer them to community resources and provide insight on communication styles and needs within the family. I look forward to a discussion about the unique perspective I can bring while applying professional and therapeutic skills for youth in the UMFS program.
