emetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade knows all too well that nothing

AMATEUR
is guaranteed in amateur boxing. But that hasn’t reduced his
confidence going into the 2008 Olympic Games. To let Demetrius
tell it, there’s no way he’s leaving Beijing, China, without a gold medal.

“I know the Russians will be there, the
Cubans will be there, but I’m really not
worried about anybody, no one specific guy,”
the 20-year-old welterweight says. “I’m just
gonna go do my own thing. And if I gotta
get a little rough in there, that’s what I’m
gonna do.”
Andrade is the No. 1-ranked amateur in the
world. At 152 pounds following his gold-
medal win at the World Championships
last November, the Providence, R.I., native
displayed the skills that make him one of
the USA’s best hopes for Olympic gold.
A southpaw boxer-puncher whose style is
rooted in defense and dual-fisted assaults,
he has had first-hand experience with
international competition. In the finals of
Champions of Tomorrow the 2007 PanAm Games in Rio de Janeiro,

Brazil, Demetrius lost a controversial
decision to Brazilian favorite Pedro Lima.
“Everybody knows I got robbed,” Demetrius
says. “When you go to other countries and
you’re fighting a person from that country
and he’s the only one they’ve got left, they’re
gonna give it to him regardless. But that
fight already happened. There’s nothing
I can do about it. It let me know that
whenever I’m in that situation, I just need to
let it all go. Let my hands go, because that’s
the only way I can score.”
Despite that disappointment, Demetrius
doesn’t see anything standing in his way in
Beijing. “I see myself on that stand, getting
that gold medal,” Andrade says. “As long
as I keep getting stronger and build up my
wind more, everything should be good.”

uan Diaz has to prioritize. The 24-year-old’s life is a constant balancing act between his “job”
– taking classes full-time at the University of Houston in pursuit of a political science degree
and eventually law school – and his “hobby”: holding the title of lightweight boxing champion
of the world. Diaz (33-0, 17 KO’s) is immersed in six-days-a-week training for a March 8 title defense
against Nate Campbell in Mexico, and balancing a larger-than-usual class load this semester.

“It gets a little hard sometimes, you know. I
question myself, like, ‘Why do I take classes
during training?’” Diaz says. “But then I realize
that boxing is not everything. I’m at the peak of
what I do, but boxing can end tomorrow. With
school, nobody can take that away from me.”
“We’ve always worked boxing around his school;
never the other way around,” says trainer/manager
Willie Savannah, who’s been running the Savannah
Boxing Club in Houston for almost 30 years. “What
sets Juan apart from most fighters – and it’s
the same thing with the Klitschko brothers – is
education. He goes into the ring understanding
that he’s gonna get a college degree and be a
lawyer whether he wins the fight or not. Having
something to fall back on gives him a sense of
relaxation. He doesn’t go in there thinking, ‘If I lose
I’m going to have to sleep in the street.’”

That said, the ferocity and dedication with
which Diaz attacks his training makes it tough
to believe that Juan sees boxing as his second-
most important responsibility. Universally
considered to be one of the hardest-working
and best-conditioned athletes in the sport, Diaz
has come a long way from the 110-pound eight-
year-old who first walked into Savannah’s gym
years ago. Today, Savannah and Juan’s strength
and conditioning coach, Brian Caldwell, have
helped turn their fighter into one of the sport’s
elite athletes.
“By the time Juan was 15 he was getting up at
5 o’clock every morning, working out and then
going to school, and coming back to the gym
when he was out of school,” Savannah says.
“One day I asked him, ‘How many kids in the
world do you think are doing what you’re doing?
You’ve gotta do something that they don’t do if
you want to be the best in the world.’”
The aggressive, volume-punching style that
“Baby Bull” has developed depends totally on
superior physical conditioning. The most unique
aspect of his training is that he doesn’t run.
Instead, Diaz swims and uses the Stairmaster to
ease pressure on his joints while strengthening
his legs.
“I know I don’t have that natural ability, that
one-punch knockout power, so I make up for
it by training as hard as I do,” Diaz says. “It
helps me a lot in the later rounds of a fight. A
lot of guys can’t stand the pressure that I apply
on them. Being in shape helps me win a lot
of fights.”
 Train Like a Champion: a week in the gym with juan diaz

the workout, your body is always guessing and always improving.”

Bodyweight Training – Wednesday’s weight session features bodyweight

training. Each exercise is something Juan can do with only his body. He
may start with 50 standard push-ups, then do 10 reps each of plyometric
push-ups, wide-stance push-ups and hips-elevated push-ups. He’ll rest
for a minute and a half, and then repeat the routine. Rest and repeat.
Then Juan will do three sets of pull-ups until failure, followed by three sets
of hyperextension back exercises.

Lower Body Weightlifting

Swimming – Juan swims every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He starts at
7 a.m. with weightlifting and then works an hour and a half on the rotating
Stairmaster machine. Then he swims a mile and a half in the pool, which
takes about 35–45 minutes. “It’s something like climbing a mountain,”
Diaz says. Caldwell, who trains about a dozen other professional fighters
out of the Wellness Center in Houston, says, “When you think about it from
a physiological standpoint, you can make a legit argument that the way
we do it is better. Juan’s working on his ninth world title defense; he’s got
three belts … we must be doing something right.”
“A lot of guys can’t stand the pressure
that I apply on them. Being in shape
helps me win a lot of fights.”
Upper Body Weightlifting – Before his swim on Mondays, Juan has intense
upper body weightlifting sessions. He starts every workout with 600 stomach
crunches from different angles. Then he begins hammer strength bench
