WHEREAS: Condoleezza Rice will be speaking as a part of the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series at Northrop on April 17th; and WHEREAS: The full cost of the event is funded entirely by private donations and not at all subsidized by student tuition, student fees, or tax dollars2; and WHEREAS: the University of Minnesota mission states the University strives to sustain an open exchange of ideas in an environment that embodies the values of academic freedom, responsibility, integrity, and cooperation; that provides an atmosphere of mutual respect, free from racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice and intolerance;1 and WHEREAS: The Universitys System-Wide Task Force on Diversity found that, The dynamic cultural and intellectual transactions that occur at the intersections of diverse perspectives and knowledge systems spur the kind of questioning and innovative thinking that advance and even define discovery and scholarly excellence;2 and WHEREAS: Tickets are free of cost for all University of Minnesota Students and Condoleezza Rice will be meeting with a small group of students before she speaks3; and WHEREAS: Students in attendance will have the opportunity to hear Condoleeza Rice share her perspective on the progress achieved and challenges ahead in efforts to promote civil rights for all Americans;4 and

WHEREAS: The University Senate will take up a resolution that advises the sponsor of the event to disinvite the speaker on the grounds of political viewpoints and accusations; be it RESOLVED: That the Minnesota Student Association Forum urges the MSA President, or their designee, in accordance with Title XII Section 3 of the bylaws, to attend the University Senate and voice opposition to the resolution; be it further RESOLVED: The Minnesota Student Association Forum also urges Student Senators to attend the University Senate and voice opposition to the resolution.
