1 General
1.1 General Description
The 4018 Helium Level Meter has been specifically designed for measurement of liquid helium levels within Siemens superconducting MRI magnets during transit and preliminary stages of installation i.e.; without electrical power and without the associated electronics connected. It is only to be used on the following products; OR24, OR26, OR35, OR42, OR48, OR50, OR58, OR64, OR70, OR71, OR76, OR91, OR92. If you are in any doubt please contact Siemens Magnet Headquarters Support Centre. The 4018 Helium Level Meter is part of a kit used to complete a circuit with the magnet helium level probe. A propagating current is sent through the magnet probe and the resistance of the probe is measured. The result is fed into the Helium Level Meter and an electronic comparison made between it and known values. The meter uses 10 LED's to display the level of helium liquid in steps of 10%, the meter is calibrated to 5%.

2.2 Instructions for use

Ensure the transport case is outside the 50 gauss limit before opening. Remove the units and cables from the transport case. Connect the helium probe lead to the helium probe connector (marked 'A' on the magnet turret). If required connect the meter extension lead to the helium probe lead and to the Helium Level Meter. Connect the output of the DC Supply Unit to the Helium Level Meter.

WARNING

Strong magnetic fields. Risk of personal injury and equipment damage. The DC supply unit must remain as far away as possible from the magnet if it is at field. = > Ensure the leads are at full length before connecting to the helium level meter.

Connect the DC Supply Unit to a suitable mains supply with one of the leads supplied in the kit. Switch on the AC mains supply to the DC Supply Unit. Ensure no LED's are illuminated on the meter display. Ensure the "Normal/Boost" switch is set to "Normal", before applying power to the meter. It is recommended that the "Boost" facility is NOT used when the magnet is at field. Press the "Test" button and after 10 seconds observe the level indicated. NOTE The level displayed may have an error of up to 5% from actual.

If it is known that the magnet has a helium level of less than 95% but the unit continues to display 95%-100% either the probe is faulty or the probe is not propagating correctly. Set the "Normal/Boost" switch to "Boost" and press the "Test" button again. o If a reading is not obtained press the "Test" button one more time. If no reading is obtained then the helium level probe could be faulty.

Once the magnet helium level has been satisfactorily obtained, switch off the AC mains supply and disconnect the helium probe lead from the helium probe connector at the turret. Return all items to the transport case. Ensure that the system lead is re-connected.

2.3 Helium Volt Sense Lead

The volt sense lead supplied can be used to measure the helium output voltage from the 4018 meter. An additional hand held multimeter will be required to read the voltage when the lead is connected.

2.4 Instructions for Cleaning

There are no cleaning methods recommended for the supplied power supplies. The Helium Level Meter may be cleaned using a soft cloth and a proprietary electronic cleaning fluid.
