Driftless Area
Scenic Byway
The 100-mile Driftless Area Scenic Byway
zigzags its way across Allamakee County in
northeastern Iowa. What makes this route
truly special is the beautiful topography of the
area. Centuries ago when the last glaciers
passed over much of Iowa attening and
depositing glacial till, this corner of the state remained
untouched. The result is a striking region of gashed and
furrowed terrain known as the Driftless Area.
Along this Byway, the Mississippi, Yellow and Upper
Iowa rivers have carved through the land to create majestic
limestone bluffs, forested valleys and meandering river
bottoms. The distinctive landscape offers many panoramic
vistas and breathtaking views that have resulted in the
Driftless Area Scenic Byway being rated the most scenic
state Byway in Iowa.
Develop an understanding of the areas cultural heritage
by spending time in each of the ve Byway communities:
Postville, Harpers Ferry, Waukon, Lansing and New Albin.
Each Byway community offers its own unique stories,
festivals and places to explore. These quaint countryside
towns offer a plethora of opportunities to shop, dine on
local cuisine, relive history or enjoy outdoor recreation all
while experiencing the areas exquisite scenery. The total
travel time of the Byway is three hours.

Area residents and visitors are invited to join
Allamakee Economic Development and Tourism for
a summer adventure exploring the historical, cultural
and natural treasures of Allamakee County. The 2013
Driftless Safari program will run from Memorial Day to
Labor Day, with 20 exciting places to visit and learn
about.
The Allamakee Driftless Safari is a county-wide
outdoor scavenger hunt that allows families and friends
to play outside and explore some amazing places in
Allamakee County. The event lasts all summer, from
Memorial Day to Labor Day, and best of all, it is free to
everyone who participates.
The Safari is designed to increase public exposure
to and appreciation of 20 different cultural assets
right outside many participants back doors here in
Allamakee County. This Safari supports an effort that
encourages life-long learning experiences for people
of all ages.
HOW TO PLAY
Anyone who would like to take part in the Safari can
stop by the Allamakee County Economic Development
Ofce or any one of the six Allamakee County public
libraries to pick up a free map and guidebook. They
Driftless Safari
can then take all summer to visit as
many of the 20 featured sites of the
Safari as possible to see what they
can discover about the special places
of Allamakee County.
The locations where the maps
and guidebooks can be picked up
include: Dolores Tillinghast Memorial
Library in Harpers Ferry; Meehan Memorial Lansing
Public Library in Lansing; New Albin Public Library in
New Albin; Postville Public Library in Postville; Robey
Memorial Public Library in Waukon; Waterville Public
Library in Waterville and Allamakee County Economic
Development Ofce in Waukon.
Each of the 20 Allamakee County sites included
in the Safari will have a wooden post located at the
site, which will have a tile located on top with a design
where participants will be able to make a rubbing into
their guidebook. The map will tell them where all of the
20 rubbing posts are located, and the guidebook will
tell them more about the sites, directions, and gives
them a clue to nd the rubbing posts and places to
make each rubbing. Once Safari-goers have visited
all 20 sites, they will have a complete guidebook and
will have gotten to experience and learn about sites in
Allamakee County.
For more information about the Safari, visit
the Allamakee Driftless Safari website at safari.

Yellow River State Forest, located in eastern
Allamakee County, encompasses nearly 8,500 acres
of prime forest area. Yellow River remains under multi-
use forest management, incorporating not only forestry,
but wildlife management, watershed protection, and
outdoor recreation into its general policy. It is a popular
spot for hunting deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, rabbits,
and squirrels. While Yellow River is not large enough
to register itself as a wilderness area, the forest has
traditionally been oriented toward a more wilderness-
like experience for those visiting. Camping facilities are

Lansing is a wonderful tourist town located on the
Mississippi River. The Lansing area has a heritage
encompassing the wonders of the Mound Builders,
Indian Wars, steamboating trade, commercial shing,
clamming, and button making. Lansing is proud of
its Lansing Sports Complex, which has a beautiful
ball park, tennis court, and many play items. Lansing
Offering a view of three states, Lansings Mt.
Hosmer is incorporated into a 75-acre city park. The
elevation of its summit is 1,060 feet, 440 feet above
the Mississippi River.
Park facilities include a large look-out area, shelter
house, cooking grills, picnic tables, playground
equipment, and hiking trails.
Dedicated in 2002 were six white pines, several
plaques, and a agpole near the lookout. These six
trees symbolize over 600 trees planted in honor of the
634 Allamakee County veterans who served in World
War I. Most of the original trees, donated in 1922 by
former Mt. Hosmer owner I.D. Fowler, were destroyed
in a 1925 re. This area is part of a war memorial. After
receiving this land from Fowler, the American Legion
donated it to the City.

On Lansings South Front Street parallel to the

testament to Lansings early commercial shing, ice
harvesting, and logging industries. A relic of Lansings
development as a Mississippi River town, the museum

information on ice harvesting and log rafting. Many of
the displayed items, previously utilized in clamming,
supported a booming button factory in the small town
of Lansing.

Located three miles north of Marquette off Highway
76, Efgy Mounds National Monument is best
explored through an extensive series of groomed
hiking trails. Visitors hike past ancient Indian burial and
ceremonial mounds to numerous bluff tops offering
spectacular vistas 400 feet above the Mississippi and
Yellow River valleys. The south unit trail brings hikers
to the Marching Bears, one of the largest and best
preserved efgy mound groups in America. Entrance
fees are no longer collected at the Monument.
Guided hikes and special events are planned year-
round and picnic tables are scattered along Highway
76 south of the park. ADA accessible features include
modern visitor center, museum, bookstore, and a one
mile elevated boardwalk trail connected to the visitor
center.
Call 563-873-3491 or visit the parks website at
