Regional Identity Analysis Task Doc Martin, ITV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=7sNf-MwxTSE TASK: Watch the clip and answer the questions. You should give evidence from the clip to explain your responses. Evidence should come from technical aspects such as mise en scene, camera work, editing and sound. 1. Can you identify where the characters are from within the country (UK)?

Doc Martin and the lady on the picture next to him are from London. I can say that because in the clip I can hear that they are talking with a posh accent whereas the other three are talking with a country accent. This tells me that they are from Cornwall. Another aspect that shows that the Lady and doc Martin are from London is that they are dressed very posh and this is a stereotype for Londoners. In the clip is one countertype because the Police man is wearing a uniform which makes him look posh. 2. Are people from different areas shown as having different interests, personalities, attitudes, behaviours? How? Doc Martin is having a different personality as the girl with the dreadlocks because he is very posh and he has the personality to never tell any lies or to break the law, whereas in the clip the girl is telling another boy to lie to someone on the phone. This shows that people from different regions have different personalities. 3. Is their regional identity represented as being important in their life? How? I can see in the clip that the old man is talking about his dialect and he is explaining a word which shows me that his region is important for him. Another aspect I saw is that the woman from London is talking a lot about community and this makes me feel that she feels confident and that regional identity is important for her as well.

Regional Identity Analysis Task 4. How do other characters in the clip treat the characters from different regions? Give examples One example for this question can be seen, when doc Martin is talking to the older man. He is behaving a bit rude and shows that he is not very interested in what the older man is explaining to him. I think so because he is interrupting him. This shows that he is behaving in different way when he is talking to a character from a different region. Another example is when doc Martin is behaving in a different way when he is talking to characters from a different region can be seen when he is talking to the police officer. He is not very friendly and he doesnt give him a chance to speak to him, whereas doc Martin is a lot nicer when he is talking to the women who is from London as well. He is acting really nice and he gives her an appointment even if he is in a rush. 5. Are people from particular regions portrayed as being better, more powerful, than others? (Binary opposites?) How? I think that people from London are portrayed in a better and more powerful ways as Doc Martin has the right to interrupt other people and tell them what they should do. This shows that he has more power than the characters from Cornwall as they are doing what he is telling them to do. 6. Are people from particular regions portrayed as being abnormal /weaker/ more pathetic than others? (Dominant/Subordinant!) How? People from different regions are portrayed as being weaker than people from other regions. I think so because I can see in the clip of doc Martin that the people are weaker. They are weaker because they are doing what Doc Martin is telling them to do and this therefore shows that people from particular regions are more dominant then people in other regions. 7. What is the overall message the clip is trying to portray about regional identity? I think the overall message the clip wants to portray about regional identity is that the representation of characters is dependent on where they are from and what is stereotypical for them. An example for this can be seen in the clip because English people from London are shown as upper class, they are talking very posh and they are dressed very posh

Regional Identity Analysis Task whereas people from south west such as people Cornwall are portrayed as they are a bit backwards and living in the countryside. 8. Summary: Evaluate how the different regional identities are represented (positive/negative, stereotypically/counter stereotypically, theories) I think that different regional identities are represented stereotypically. They are represented stereotypically because Londoners are represented as strong, powerful, posh and dressed well whereas people from south west such as people from Cornwall are represented as a bit backwards and weaker. They are also living on the countryside and this is a stereotype as well. The fact that the characters are represented stereotypically can be positive and negative. This depends on where particular the character is from because the people from Cornwall are represented as weaker and subdominant and this is a negative aspect for this region.
