Lesson Design Template Teacher Candidate: Michelle Lok Topic: Sorting and Classifying + 2 Way Chart Grade: 2 Subject:

Math (Data Management) Time: 1 hr 5 min

OBJECTIVES Ontario Curricular Expectations - Collect and organize categorical or discrete primary data and display the data Lesson Objectives: - demonstrate an ability to organize objects into categories, by sorting and classifying objects using two attributes simultaneously (e.g., sort attribute blocks by colour and shape at the same time); - demonstrate an understanding of data displayed in a graph - read primary data MENTAL SET Estimated time: 25 min - Tell the students that they are starting a new unit in data management - Read The Great Math Contest to students, and go through the pages with students briefly- tell students we will return to this book as we progress through the chapter - Utilize chart paper, and do a KWL chart to help children recall what they know about data management and what they would want to learn (Acts as diagnostic tool to see what students know about this topic) - Once finished, ask students if they remember what it means to sort, as we will begin with that. Discuss some ideas. - Read Daves Down to Earth Rock shop to remind students of sorting and characteristics STATED OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE: Estimated time 5 min

- Tell students that we are starting with a sorting activity, and our job is to sort some objects based on different characteristics - We will then sort these objects into a 2 way char, which will help us see what characteristics are similar and different

INPUT/ MODELLING/ DEMONSTRATION: Estimated Time 15 min - Start by pouring out a handful of varied objects on the floor. Pick up a few objects and ask students to describe it (shape, colour, size, etc). Ask students to think about how they can sort these objects. Do this several times with various characteristics. - Once children can comfortably sort these items, draw a 2 way chart on the board. Describe what this chart is, and prompt students to think of two attributes we can compare. - As a class, figure out which items belong in which box. Try it several times

PRACTICE

Estimated time: 15 min

Have each child pair up with another, and give them each a bag of shapes to work with. Have each pair try out sorting the materials into different attributes. Give each student a layout of a 2-way chart, and ask them to fill in the chart with attributes and objects. If children are finished, as them to draw another 2-way chart at the back of the paper to see if they can sort the materials in other ways. Ensure that both children get a chance to participate

Materials: - Blackboard/chart paper - Bags with shapes - Layout of 2-way chart - Variety of objects - The Great Graph Contest/ Daves down to earth rock shop Tactics: Think, Pair, Share

CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING Ask children how they have sorted, and why they have sorted in that way. If children are struggling, ask what it is they do not understand or try to use observations

CLOSURE Estimated time: 5 mins Tell children to pack away materials, noting that we will come back to work on these again tomorrow. Take pictures if necessary and if children are in progress of doing something and are not finished. CONSIDERATIONS Multiple Intelligences: verbal linguistic logical/mathematical visual/spatial interpersonal Accommodations: Partners for students who are having trouble Assessment: teacher evaluation observation discussion
