Lake Lanier Sprints, late March good for beginners Location: Gainesville, GA northeast of Atlanta on Lake Lanier Day: Sunday, drive down the day before Distance/drive time: 255 miles, 4.5 - 5 hours, Eastern Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: yes, 1 night in a hotel Size: 19 rowing clubs (juniors, collegiate, masters) Site of 1996 Olympic rowing regatta Guntersville Sprints, early April good for beginners Location: Guntersville, AL southeast of Huntsville and southwest of Chattanooga Day: Saturday, 8am-3pm, Central Time Distance/drive time: 150 miles, 2.5 hours Overnight: its up to you Size: small, (juniors, collegiate, masters) Regatta started in 2012 Dogwood Sprints, late April good for beginners Location: Oak Ridge, TN at Melton Lake Day: Sunday Masters & Open Distance/drive time: 170 miles, 2.75 hours, Eastern Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: its up to you Size: 40 rowing clubs (juniors, collegiate, masters) Buoyed course with starting blocks Southeast Regionals, mid June Location: Langley Pond, Aiken, SC Day: Saturday & Sunday Distance/drive time: 400 miles, 6 hours, Eastern Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: yes, 1 or 2 nights depending if you race on Sunday Size: 20 rowing clubs Close-toed shoes recommend due to fire ants Can be very hot, shade and hydration are crucial Club Nationals, mid July (2,000 meters) Location changes every year, 2014 Oak Ridge, TN Day: Wednesday through Sunday Distance/drive time: varies depending on location Overnight: yes, # of nights depends on your race schedule

Chattanooga Head Race, early October good for beginners Location: Chattanooga, TN Day: Saturday Distance/drive time: 135 miles, 2+ hours, Eastern Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: depends on the time of your first race Size: 32 clubs (masters, juniors, collegiate) Head of the Charles, mid October Location: Boston, MA Day: Saturday & Sunday Distance/drive time: a plane flight away, Easter Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: yes, at least 2 nights Size: 715 rowing clubs, 2080 entries Head of the Hooch, first weekend in November Location: Chattanooga, TN Day: Saturday & Sunday Distance/drive time: 135 miles, 2+ hours, Eastern Time (you lose an hour) Overnight: yes or no depending on your race schedule Size: 189 clubs, 2000 entries Hotel rooms and transportation: Masters book their own hotel rooms; make arrangements for their own meals and transportation to and from regattas. Hotels are usually available in various price ranges depending on your budget and often you can go in on a room with other rowers to cut down on the cost. Its always best to book far in advance of regattas and cancel within your cancelation period if your plans change.
