ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS FOR TODAYS UNDERWATER FLEET

Thales Underwater Systems has more than 25 years of experience in the design, development and production of submarine based SATCOM and multifunction antenna systems. The SM-SATCOM terminal is a Fleet Broadband antenna system that has been developed to provide submarines with a high data rate voice and data communication capability. The antenna solution is based on the new satellite technology developed by Inmarsat that offers a low cost solution for submarine platforms requiring communications at data rates of up to 284kbps. Inmarsat operates a global satellite communications service with a constellation of geostationary satellites. Recently, Inmarsat has commissioned a new generation of satellites that provide Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) and Fleet Broadband services for terrestrial and marine communications respectively.

Inmarsat is a provider of the satellite airtime and appoints Partners that can provide services and solutions to enable customers to connect to this service. The compact design of the SM-SATCOM antenna ensures that it can be easily installed onto a submarine mast. It can also be fitted onto existing mast platforms where high-speed communications is required with minimal re-work or installation costs being involved. In addition to providing Fleet Broadband communications, the antenna also has the added, optional, functionality of providing UHF/VHF lineof-sight (LOS) communications. The antenna system enables simultaneous operation in both frequency bands. The SM-SATCOM is controlled in-board from a standard PC. This can either be a dedicated terminal or a PC already installed on-board. The SM-SATCOM antenna operates in the following frequency bands:

Control Unit: Standard PC or Laptop running Windows software The antenna assembly is fitted in a radome constructed from a fibre-glass resin composite material and provides a pressure proof and waterproof enclosure for the antenna elements and electronics. The antenna radome is finished with a water-shedding paint making the antenna inert in sea water. The antenna base is manufactured from aluminium nickel bronze. A universal flange at the antenna base provides a general purpose mounting arrangement suitable for fitting on a wide range of submarine masts. The SM-SATCOM antenna has been designed to withstand the extreme environmental conditions experienced on external submarine platforms and has been tested to meet the appropriate shock and vibration requirements. The antenna has also been pressure tested to 67 BAR.
