ECON 111: INTRODUCTORY MICROECONOMICS Tutorial # 01 (Week commencing 29 July) Preliminary Tutorial Teaching is an important job.

. We have a passion for it. We assume that you really want to learn. 1. What is expected from you? Tutorial preparation and attendance are of absolutely fundamental importance in this subject. If (for whatever reason) you will not be able to attend the ECON 111 tutorials on a regular basis, you should withdraw ECON 111 right off. In the first tutorial your Tutor will carefully explain the rules governing the Random Tests. The Tutor will also make clear the sort of (minor) difficulties inextricably linked to ECON 111. The Zero Tolerance Policy will also be explained to the students to make sure that all students realize the seriousness of the issue. Cheating has led to expulsion. CHEATING: ZERO TOLERANCE During a Random Test period, students can only have the materials necessary to write the test on their desk-top. All other material must be placed in your bags, and not let at your feet or near the desk. Any student attempting to cheat in the Random Tests will be referred to the Schools Primary Investigation Officer under the Universitys Rules for Student Conduct and Discipline. The Primary Investigation Officer will then hold a meeting with the student, tutor and subject coordinator. Serious penalties can be applied. The University has a zero tolerance toward cheating, even for small tests that may only represent a small proportion of the total assessment.

2. Tutorial Questions Please note that the marking criteria for the Tutorial Questions are as follows. (a) An understanding of concepts must be demonstrated using clear written English; (b) Graphs and diagrams must be accurately drawn and fully labelled; and (c) Answer to numerical problems must be complete showing detail of how the final result was obtained. 3. Maths Required The only mathematical tools that we use in ECON 111 are (a) (b) linear equations in one unknown, and graphical representation of straight lines.

You should have learnt these elementary tools in high school. These mathematical tools will be explained in the lectures to refresh your memory. Your Tutor is willing to talk to any student who finds this level of maths impossibly difficult to discuss possible plans of action. 4. Feedback We believe we are giving you clear guidelines of what is expected from you. Feedback, including constructive criticism, is very important for us. Consequently, do not hesitate to talk to your tutor or lecturer. 5. What are your expectations about ECON 111? You will be invited to tell in class your expectations (if any) about this subject. We are looking forward to hearing from you. An answer such as I do not have any expectations. I am here because this subject is a prerequisite for other subjects. I hate microeconomics is a valid answer. 6. Dont Be Fooled We will take great pains to make nothing more difficult than it needs to be. You may be tempted to learn microeconomics by simply listening to lectures or relying on common sense when attempting the answers to the Tutorial Questions. Dont be fooled. Microeconomics cannot be learned by osmosis. Learning requires solving problems and active participation in tutorials. Put your pencil on the paper and draw your own diagrams. A ruler is an important tool to draw diagrams accurately. Always keep in mind: The difficulty in learning microeconomics lies in the discipline itself, not in your absorptive capacity. You should not be discouraged if, occasionally, you find yourself spending an hour on only two or three Tutorial Questions. 7. A word of Warning Finally, please note that next week your Tutor may decide to give one of the five Random Tests. Come prepared! Do not squander marks!!
