International Conference on Sustainability of Digital Libraries 25 - 27 September, 2014 Organised by University Library, JNT University Hyderabad, Kukatpally, Hyderabad.

1. Introduction Todays knowledge divide refers to the gaps that exist in the four building blocks of Knowledge Societies, namely, knowledge creation, knowledge preservation, knowledge sharing and knowledge application. Digital Library would play an important part in all the above activities. Most of the information accessed today is digital, with the Internet playing an important role in the entire process. The increasing prevalence of digital information systems and technologies compels libraries and other information services across the globe to update their systems and provide users with a digital experience outside the confines of the physical structure of the library, while dealing with new areas of concern, such as, digital information preservation, and the unethical use of information.

In response to the problems of modernity, many social scientists and economists are projecting their views of the future based on differing philosophical, social, political and economic perspectives on the nature of sustainable development. Thus, a new challenge is emerging for the community of digital libraries regarding their sustainability. How to develop digital libraries within the framework of sustainable development is the crux of the problem. One view within the debate advocates sustainable development as a set of policies and methods to sustain global industrialization, through sustainable technological and economic development. An alternate view presents a scenario of global scarcities, conflicts and decreasing natural resources. Sustainable development thus represents a radical rethinking of the current social, economic and political dimensions of development

The proposed International Conference will examine the nature and implications of the sustainable development debate and the potential impact of each alternate future for the development of digital libraries and their role in educational, cultural and economic development. It is being organized to meet the challenges of a knowledge society of tomorrow and give the nation states a framework for sustainability in the field of conservation and management of knowledge. It will provide an international platform to all stakeholders to address issues of future libraries and to debate over the role that future libraries can play in establishing and developing Sustainable Digital Libraries .

2. Background of the International Conference The JNT University Library has conducted Short-term Courses on Library Automation, Networking & Digitization-2010, Digital Resource Management in Libraries2011, Modern Technologies in Libraries- 2012 and Electronic Information Resources in Libraries-2013. The University Library has also successfully conducted a Refresher Course on Library Automation and Digitization - 2010, one-day Workshop on IEEE Xplore Digital Library 2013 and also a two-day National Conference on Library Security Management in Digital Era in the year 2011. The overwhelming success of all the above has formed a source of encouragement and motivation to conduct this International Conference. This will be yet another stimulating forum for Library professionals to share their knowledge, experience and wisdom. The International Conference will focus on Sustainability of Digital Libraries. 3. Conference Objectives Sustainable information refers to the resources that facilitate integration of all the three parts of sustainable development viz. Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability. The concept of sustainability has not been researched well within the mainstream Information Science in general, and in the context of digital libraries, in particular. It is necessary to identify the challenges that are associated with the design, delivery, access and use of digital information. Keeping in view of the above key aspects and theme of the Conference, the following objectives are set: To bring together and create an environment to LIS Academicians and Researchers on a single platform to assess/study the sustainability of digital libraries, To facilitate adoption, implementation and management of Sustainable Digital Libraries To provide a platform and enable interaction among LIS Professionals to share their experiences about sustainability of digital libraries. 4. Conference Highlights Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings with ISBN Awards will be given for the Best Paper and Best Poster presentations. Invited talks by National and International renowned speakers. National and International Publishers exhibit their products and make presentations.
