TUTORIAL-1 DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS-II

1. A pair of spur gears transmitting power from motor to pump impeller shaft is to be designed with as small center distance as possible. The forged steel pinion permissible stress 160MN/ m2 is to transmit 4KW at 600 RPM to a cast steel gear permissible stress100MN/ m2 with a transmission ratio 9/2 to 1, and 20o full depth involute teeth are to be used. Determine the necessary face width and module. 2. A cast steel pinion (permissible stress 103MN/ m2) rotating at 900 RPM is to drive a cast iron gear (permissible stress 55MN/ m2) at 144RPM. The teeth are to have standard 20o stub involute profiles and maximum power to be transmitted is 25KW. Determine the proper module, no. of teeth and face width for this gear for stand point of strength, dynamic load and wear. Pinion is surface hardened to BHN 250. 3. A compressor running at 300RPM is driven by a 15KW at 1200RPM. Motor through a 20-degree full depth involute gear. The center distance is 375mm. choosing the suitable material for pinion and gear, Design the drive completely. Assume medium shock condition. 4. A cast steel 24-tooth spur pinion operating at 1150 RPM transmits 3KW to a cast steel 56 Tooth spur gear. The gears have the following specifications: module 3, permissible stress 160MN/ m2, face width 35mm 14.5o tooth profile. Design the gear. 5. Design a pair of parallel helical gears made of 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth of gear. The pinion rotates at 720rpm. The normal pressure angle is 20o while the helix angle 25o. The face width is 40mm and normal module is 4mm. the pinion and gear made of steel with ultimate strength of 600N/mm2 & heat treated to surface hardness of 300BHN. Take Cs=1.5 & F.O.S=2. 6. Design a pair of helical gears of equal diameter, 20o stub tooth helical gears to transmit 40KW with moderate shock at 1200rpm. The two shafts are parallel and 45 cm apart. Find the module and face width of the teeth. And also check for dynamic and wear load. 7. Design two C.I bevel gears having pitch diameter of 7.5 cm & 10cm respectively are transmit 2 KW at 1100rpm of pinion. The teeth profiles are 14.5o systems. Assume light shock load conditions with 8-10 hrs per day service. 8. A 20o full depth straight teeth bevel gear rotates at 500rpm and transmits 12KW power to other gear rotating at 200 rpm. The outer module is 3.5mm and no. of teeth on pinion is 30. Ratio between the cone distance & face width is 3. Check of design for steady loading if allowable static stress in bending is 100 MPa. 9. Design a worm gear set to transmit 12KW from the shaft at 1400rpm to another at 75 rpm. Assume normal pressure angle as 20 & center of distance between the shafts is 25cm. 10. Design a worm gearing to transmit 10KW from an electric motor running at 1500 rpm to a machine running at 75 rpm. Load is intermittent (< 3 hr. of continuous service) and steady.
