COURSE OUTLINE

2013/2014
COURSE NAME: Computer Aided Machine Design COURSE CODE: DSGN2401

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course applies the principles, standards and codes from the pre-requisites to a higher level by incorporating the principles and approaches of machine design from machine concept to the three dimensional computer model of the machine. Course Credits: 4.5 Pre-requisites: COMP1201, DSGN2341 Co-requisites: Enrollment into Stream "A" (Machine Elective)

LEARNING OUTCOMES
OUTCOME
1 Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to Design shafts based on maximum shear theory The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Analyse shafts incorporating both horizontal and vertical loading. Calculate the stress concentration on shafting as it occurs in keyseats, annular grooves, holes and fillets. 2 Design and analyze springs The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Compute the dimensions of various geometric features for helical compression springs. Design and analyze torsion springs 3 Construct and draw developments The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Apply mechanical drawing concepts to produce a development and intersection drawing 4 Follow engineering design principles to solve mechanical problems The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Examine the importance of integrating individual machine elements into a more comprehensive system. Design and build in a team practical machines that do specific tasks. Demonstrate effective time management skills. Contribute to a project team.

Create three dimensional computer models of mechanical parts The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Design , draw, and dimension given machine parts in 3-D using Autocad's Advanced Modeling Extension Construct 3 dimensional parametric parts and assembly models as well as generate 2 dimensional drawings and bills of material Demonstrate effective time management skills. Contribute to a project team.

Produce production drawings from computer model The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome: Design and draw orthographic machine detail drawings to industry standards Analyse and summarize the operating principles of a cam and reciprocating system. Calculate and draw a cam for a reciprocating system. Demonstrate effective time management skills. Contribute to a project team.
