Evaluation of Learning Objective: Students will be assessed through the mini-book they create and by the stated questions they answer. Engagement: Class, we are going to read The First Thanksgiving by Jean Craighead George. Who can tell me what Thanksgiving is? Do you know when this celebration takes place? Has anyone read this book before? Who can raise their hand and tell me what this book may be about? Well, you are going to need to put your listening ears on and pay attention to the story. I may ask you some questions throughout the book to answer at the end. Design for Learning: I. Teaching: As you read, you will ask questions at the appropriate times (before & after youve read the answer. So, before you approach why the pilgrims came to America youd say, Listen carefully.. and then following the passage, What impact/significance did the Native Americans have on the survival of the Pilgrims? Continue with these prompts throughout the book. The students will not answer the questions aloud. Rather, they will think about them in their head. As I read the book to you, I will prompt you to listen carefully throughout the story. This probably means that section is going to be very important. If I ask you a question, I dont want you to answer it aloud I want you to think about it in your head and Ill ask you to answer the questions after we read the story. So, you turn those ears on and listen up!!

The questions asked: Why & When do we celebrate Thanksgiving? What was the voyage like for the Pilgrims? What was the adjustment like? What impact/significance did the Native Americans have on the survival of the Pilgrims? What were some events that lead to the First Thanksgiving?

II.

Opportunity for Practice: Place the children in 4 groups. Give them each a questions. Have them talk about the question in their group. Then, call on each group to share their answer with the class. The teacher will write the answers on the board (under the written question). I am going to place you in four groups.(assign groups) Now, each group is given a question to talk about. I want you all to discuss the answers. Then, we will come back together as a class and each group will share with the class what they learned!! While the students are discussing the questions in their groups, write the four questions on the board. Leave room underneath the question to write the answers out after they are discussed. Why & When do we celebrate Thanksgiving? We remember the Pilgrims; the fourth Thursday of November; its a National Holiday; which started in 1863. What was the voyage like for the Pilgrims? What was the adjustment like? Difficult, it took 65 days. Not good, many people died because of a lack of food. What impact/significance did the Native Americans have on the survival of the Pilgrims? They became friends in 1621 (Spring); they taught them how to hunt and plant crops! What were some events that lead to the First Thanksgiving? Landing in America, Plymouth Rock; having a tough adjustment; learning to hunt and plant; inviting Native Americans to feast!

I want you to cut the pages, place them in the correct order, and I will come around and staple your booklet for you. Then, I am going to pass around a sheet that has four questions on them. They should look very familiar to you. I want you to answer these questions. Once you have done that, you may go back and color your mini book. Does anyone have any questions?

As students ask questions, pass out the mini book pages and the questions page. As students start to finish cutting and putting book in order, go around and staple. IV.
