This is an information brochure on a specifc car model I really love. I wanted people to be informed why this car would be such a fantastic purchase.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign

Objectives:

One full bleed image, create new logo, wrap text around an image, over 250 original words in body copy, and trimmed off border upon printing.

Process:
I started with a few shape maps. I drew a basic shape map in InDesign with gray boxes and car shapes drawn with the pencil tool. Next I wtote out my body copy content. Next I produced a full color draft. I spent a lot of time in Photoshop clipping images. I placed images from Photoshop and Illustrator to InDesign. I was constantly switching between each program. With a couple valuable critiques, I learned I had over designed quite a bit, without any white space or heirarchy. My background texture was also too strong and competing with the body copy. I had to ditch a few ideas and pull back a lot of my design. With this fine tuning, I put in headings for proper flow, added a gray box in the background while turning the oppacity down on my texture, and contrasted the font color.

A potential employer requests a web page of one of my created logos with a description of the design process that demonstrates basic HTML and CSS skills.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop, HTML, CSS

Objectives:

Display an original logo, write content describing design process, write HTML and alter hex colors on CSS to match logo, and take a high quality screen shot

Process:

First I learned the basics of html. Once I was familiar enough with it, I wrote some rough code that didnt look pretty but had the necessary information. Next I learned how CSS worked. Our professor gave us a CSS file to modify because CSS can be studied in an entire semester versus our two class periods. From this file and a few links, I taught myself some ways to modify this CSS code to produce the look I wanted. I opened my logo in Adobe Photoshop and used the eyedropper tool to find the hex color code so my web page would display precise unity with my logo. Once I was pleased with my colors, I learned how to include a background image. With valuable critique, I learned the background image was conflicting with my header so I learned how to lower it. Last I finished with choosing contrasting fonts for my body copy and headers while still feeling unified with my logo design.

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Program:

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three original logos, each with different color schemes, not copying existing logos, no use of precreated shapes, and using the pen tool

Process:

I first started out by sketching about 15 different ideas. I ended up pulling elements from each and using them to create my three. I did all my work in Adobe Illustrator. I searched online for microphones and got an idea of how I wanted mine. I did the bottom logo first. I was so excited on making a cool microphone the only place to put the companys abbreviation was simply in the body. The cross-hairs for the wiring on the head of the mic took me awhile to figure out how to get just right. I also struggled until I found the type text on a path tool. The top logo is a combination of two of my favorite things: vector images and block letters. I choose the microphones to support the message and audience. I wanted a recognizable shape while still displaying the companys abbreviations as simply as possible. The middle one actually replaced previous idea so it was my last design. According to the 10 people I asked, it was liked the most. Again I wanted to incorporate a shape with lettering. I made the block letters thick to fill in the shape as well as contrast nicely with the other text. I didnt want it plain so I choose to align on an angle with the L in the heart.

Mastery Skills Demo

Description:

Showcase recently gained skills through an in-class exercise. We were given only 20 minutes to design something from a given set of criteria. We did not know what the subject or content would be before we started.

Date completed:
April 2, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop and InDesign

Objectives:

Create a print ad with at least one image, given body copy, a tagline, the company logo, and a call to action

Process:

First I read the instructions to get an idea of what content I needed to include. Next I googled the watch to quickly learn about the watch and what it looks like. After scanning through enough photos, I decided I wanted a huge one. I saved it from google as a png file and opened it in photoshop to clip out the background. I placed it in InDesign. Next I added the nessecary text. I scrambled to find two contrasting fonts that matched Timex. I displayed my catch phrase large at the top to grab viewers attention. I shifted the watch to the right to follow the rule of thirds. Next I found a wood texture online to match the earthy feel of the brown leather band. I placed it and sent it to the back. I googled the logo and found a large file, repeating my previous process to clip out the background. I placed it at the bottom with a link to more info. I didnt like my body copy how it was so I placed a transparent white box behind it. My final touch was wrapping the body copy around the face of the watch.

Imaging
Description:
A quick paced photography activity

Date completed:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Program:

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Capture six brand new images each featuring one specific element: outside light, inside light, foreground, background, thirds, and lead room.

Process:

With a 48 hour deadline, I had to get creative. At first it overwhelmed me trying to get all the photos that met the requirements in such a short time. I enjoyed seeing my mind work under pressure and still being pleased with the outcome of my photos. Being in small-town Idaho, things to photograph are not as prevalent. I am happy with my results although my resources were limited. To get the focus activity right, I had to take multiple photos. I tried 3 or 4 different locations until I found the one I used. Then I had to take 15-20 shots until I figured out the focus enough to get each the foreground and the background. Also for all of the photos, I was surprised how such minor edits in Photoshop really made a great difference in the images. I used tools such as making them more vibrant, sharpening objects, and playing with the levels. Overall, this was a great learning opportunity in a short amount of time.

I was to design a new logo and stationery items. I choose to represent a hip-hop group here at BYU-Idaho who use spell formatic IVmatic

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:

Create a brand new logo, 8.5 x 11, design consistent on letterhead and business cards, one full bleed element suggested, include contact info, small body copy

Process:

I first drew multiple sketches contemplating ways to use the play on IV and the shape of the number 4. After getting lots of critiques, I decided on my current choice. I had a more complicated one for my first draft and trashed it to make it simpler. I wanted to incorporate the silhouettes of the dancers. It took awhile organizing them until they felt right. I also had to size the letters until they felt right as well. Once I had the look right, I added the colors for contrast. I started using the IVmatics title and playing around with it to make the business cards and letterheads. I picked a difficult design because nothing ever felt quite right so I spent way more time than I hoped I would. But I simplified some things I didnt like and am happy with my final product.I was also switching between Adobe Illustrator and InDesign a lot.

Montage
Description: Date completed:
February 15, 2014

thepriceisright14.wordpress.com

Create a new and fresh inspirational poster montage using a composite of images and type. I choose to use pictures from my sisters bridal photos.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Blend two or more images, include some text or quotes, use masking in photoshop, have strong focal point with good flow

Process:

First I had to start with an idea. My sister recently had this photo shoot done for her wedding and I wanted to create something nice from those photos for her. I had 3 or 4 base layer pictures I was playing around with but none of them were quite what I wanted. I like this image because it follows the rule of thirds well and left me empty space to place my montage of other photos. I wanted to use her direction of eyes to be sort of daydreaming about her soon to be husband. That is another reason this photo worked so well. I added the picture of her fiance and herself in the sky followed by the flower bouqet for flow. The shoes show her personality as well as add color unity to the whole montage. Finally I trimmed it out with text that followed the color theme. I used the brush tool the most to give really soft edges to each picture in the montage to allow them to blend into each other smoothly. I used the sharpen tool to accent features like her hair, jewelry and eyes.

Flier
Description: Date completed:
January 25, 2014

thepriceisright14.wordpress.com

This was my first ever project using Adobe software. This flier was to display and inform about an event, printed in black and white.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Program:

Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Display requred information: company logo, title, body copy, choose one of six pictures, apply typography principles, and create project folder with all files inside

Process:

First, I drew four different sketches. I used my best one as a map to create the layout with Adobe InDesign. I used a large title to capture the attention of a passerby from a distance so instantly it is known what this is advertising. Date and time is important so it is also accented with a gray box. I added the three square design for an element of spice, unity and repetition. I focused heavily on alignment to be sure the final piece would be aesthetically pleasing. I left enough white space to avoid feeling cluttered. I grouped the body copy with titles for easier access to information and left the body copy simple and small for easy readability. I was given the image, logo, and content to be placed on the flier.

Event Ad
Description: Date completed:
February 1, 2014

thepriceisright14.wordpress.com

Using a scanned image from a magazine, create an event ad uincorporating a color scheme, to promote a fictious fundraiser. I used a snowboarding magazine I had.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 - Section 4 Cory Kerr

Programs:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing, find a scan a high quality image, create a full-bleed design, choose a color scheme and type to fit the audience, and use only Word.

Process:

I took my favorite elements from a few examples and combined them into my basic layout. When I had the general ideas ready, I began to experiment and get creative until it looked and felt right. I wanted the image in the bottom right corner and the title in the top left corner, giving it an asymmetrical feel. I wanted to add to the asymmetry and add unity, so thats where the squrares came in. I choose red because my scanned image had a small red portion that really stood out. I wanted the red elements to really catch the audiences attention but not be overly flashy. After receiving some critiques, I learned my white space wasnt balanced. I made my body copy a little smaller, shifted the body copy boxes to the right, made the title smaller, and moved the date/time down. It really opened up the white space and the flow. I finished with the repeating squares in the corner and a large red bar on the right to trim it all up.
