. Course Overview !
1. Description!

This course is an intensive workshop in English designed for students with little or no previous filmmaking experience who wish to learn about filmmaking in a hands-on approach. Each student writes, directs, shoots, and edits four short films in one Semester. Each class covers an essential aspect of directing a film: Mise-en-Scene, Shot Design, Principles of Continuity Filmmaking, Crew Roles and Set Protocol, Floor plans, Shot lists, Shooting Schedules, Directing Music, Editing Aesthetics, and Director's Notes. In addition to class lecture and discussion, students will examine film clips and texts; create a script, director's notes, and a production book for their final project; and screen rough cuts in class. While we will focus on narrative filmmaking, the directing techniques covered are applicable for documentaries, experimental film, and music videos. Extensive preparation outside of class-- writing scripts, casting, location scouting, shooting, crewing on fellow student shoots, and editing each project-- is required to successfully complete the course. Expect to spend your weekends either shooting or editing your projects. Successful completion of this course will enable the student to continue on to Advanced Directing. ! . Course Objectives ! Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to create a Floor Plan, Shot List, Shooting Schedule, Lined Script, and Director's Notes for any film project that they will direct; recognize the components of designing a shot with regard to shot size, lens choice, camera angle, staging, blocking, composition, camera movement; how to maintain spatial, temporal, graphic, and narrative continuity; how to utilize music as score, soundtrack, and source music; how to create and direct the dramatic beats in a script; understand the responsibilities of each crew member's role in a shoot, set protocol, and the order of commands on a film set; and deconstruct scenes from features and shorts to recognize different approaches to directing a film. !

1. Direct a Mise-en scene film up to 3 minutes: This is a silent film that is comprised of one shot--or a long take-- that utilizes the camera, staging and blocking, and other aspects of shot design that visually tells a story. Expected Shooting Time: 4-6 hours. Assessment is based on preparation, application of directorial concepts taught in class, and effectiveness of overall execution. 2. Direct a Continuity film of up to 3 minutes: This is a silent film comprised of 10-15 shots, in a continuous sequence (no jumps in time, space, or action) that maintains spatial, temporal, graphic, and narrative continuity while maintaining the authenticity of the moment. Expected Shooting Time: 6 hours. Students must complete the following pre-preproduction elements: Script, Floor Plan, Shot List, and Shooting Schedule and secure a Location. Assessment is based on preparation, application of directorial concepts taught in class, and effectiveness of overall execution. 3. Direct a Music film of up to 4 minutes: This is film that utilizes a piece of music as either score, soundtrack, or source music. Students can create a music video or an experimental work with this project as well. Expected Shooting Time: 6 hours. Assessment is based on preparation, application of directorial concepts taught in class, and effectiveness of overall execution. 4. Direct a Semester One film up to 10 minutes: The Film can be a narrative, documentary, experimental, or a music video and can employ all aspects of sound design except for dialogue: voice-over, music, ambience, and sound effects. Expected Shooting Time: 2 days. Students must submit a production book for preproduction. Assessment is based on preparation, application of directorial concepts taught in class, and effectiveness of overall execution.

5. Prepare and present a Director's Presentation for their Semester One Film which

requires: a Director's Statement about the film, a copy of the Director's notes, a visual presentation, a scene from the script with the shots and floor plan outlined, casting ideas, and possible music cues. 6. Submit a Production Book for their final film that contains: Director's Notes, Shooting Script, Shot List, Floor Plan, Shooting Schedule, Lined Script, Visual Materials, Contact list of Crew and Cast, Location information, Transportation, and Equipment list.
7. Work as a Crew Member (either as Cinematographer, Assistant Camera, or Gaffer) on 2-3 fellow student shoots per project. Assessment is based on preparation and participation

COURSE EVALUATION Students are graded on their ability to apply the concepts and principles taught within the course to their film projects. The grade is comprised of the four film projects weighted as follows: Mise-en-Scene equals 15%, Continuity equals 20%, Music Film equals 20%, and the Fourth Film equals 30%. Director's Presentations and Production Book for the final project constitute 10% of the grade. 5% of the grade is class participation.
