A perfect day in Barcelona

18 October 2010 | By Damien Simonis, Lonely Planet Start the day with coffee and a pastry in Barri Gotic. The seductive seaside capital of Barcelona is a hard-working city with a strong hedonistic streak. The story of two thousand years is etched into its Roman remains, Gothic churches and Modernista mansions especially the dreamlike landmark !uildings of "ntoni Gaud#$. The assault on the senses intensifies in Barcelona%s restaurants, !oisterous !ars and clu!s. &n summer, !eaches in and outside the city are a magnet for sun-worshippers. Mornin Start the day early with a caf amb llet coffee and milk$ and pastry on 'la(a de Sant )osep *riol, a charming old town s+uare in the heart of the Barri G,tic. Suita!ly energised, it is time to e-plore the la!yrinth of twisting lanes. .ou could spend hours simply losing yourself in streets lined !y an endless variety of shops, eateries and little !ars. "lthough much regenerated in recent decades, the /Gothic 0uarter/ still e-udes a lived-in atmosphere that makes it anything !ut an outdoor museum. Museums there are, however, and the most intriguing is the Museu d12ist,ria de Barcelona, in which you are led underground and two millennia !ack in time to an e-cavated chunk of Roman Barcino. *nce you resurface, the museum includes the Sal3 del Tinell, a grand Gothic hall. " few steps away looms the Gothic 4athedral. The rooftop views and the leafy cloister with its gaggle of geese should not !e missed. The open air caf5 at the near!y Museu 6rederic Mar7s is the ideal spot for a rest, whether the 8any collection is open or not. 6rom the 4athedral, stroll to what was once the Roman 6orum, now 'la(a de Sant )aume, which is flanked !y the "9untament town hall$ and Generalitat regional government of 4atalonia$. "cross the thundering !oulevard of :ia ;aietana, search out the city1s most !eautiful Gothic !uilding, the <sgl5sia de Santa Maria del Mar, raised in a record => years in the ?@th 4entury. Behind it, 4arrer de Montcada leads to a series of centuries-old townhouses that together house the Museu 'icasso . The collection provides a fascinating insight into the master1s early years.

L!nc" " short walk from the Museu 'icasso is the colourful Mercat de Santa 4aterina, a modern market that is home to several tempting eateries. "t the very simple Bar )oan you can get a tasty set lunch for ?? euros. The star attraction is the Tuesday special, arrs negre cuttlefish ink rice$. The dynamic 4uines de Santa 4aterina serves anything from classic Mediterranean cooking to sushi. *therwise, walk a!out ?=-AB minutes from the Museu 'icasso to the waterfront ;a Barceloneta district, peppered with seafood eateries, among them the Su+uet de l1"lmirall 'asseig de )oan de Bor!3 C=$. Afternoon "fter a stroll along the !each, it is time to cram in some of Barcelona1s icons. Take the metro from ;a Barceloneta to 'asseig de GrDcia and wander past two classics of Gaud# architecture, 4asa Batll3 and ;a 'edrera. *f the two, ;a 'edrera is the most rewarding to visit, especially its sci-fi roof with chimney pots that look more like Star Ears stormtroopers. "n afternoon of Gaud# would not !e complete without taking in the mighty work-in-progress that is the !asilica of ;a Sagrada 6am#lia. Eith soaring pillars that look more like trees, this is Gaud# at his imaginative !est, a festival of twists and curves that is still some way off completion. 2ead up the towers for an angel1s eye view of the city !elow. #$enin "s locals don1t !other with dinner !efore > pm, you could tide yourself over with tapas at Fe Tapa Madre or the designer Tapa( A@. Save space for a slap-up meal of largely 4atalan dishes at 4asa 4alvet, itself one of Gaud#1s early pro9ects. Still full of !eansG The !eautiful people tend to hit the !ars a!ove "vinguda Fiagonal. Start in Berlin, with footpath seating for the warmer months. &t happens to !e virtually ne-t door to one of the city1s more popular clu!s, ;u8 de Gas. 6or drinks with views and then dancing downstairs, gra! a ca! for Mira!lau, halfway up Ti!idado mountain. The vistas across the !right city lights and out to sea are second to none. %o& to Barcelona1s <l 'rat airport lies ?Akm southwest of the city at <l 'rat de ;lo!regat and is Spain1s !usiest international hu! after Madrid. Firect flights link Barcelona with destinations all over <urope. There are also several direct intercontinental connections. Get a !ase in the old city centre at such !udget options as 'ensi3 ABBB or 2ostal 4hic H Basic. 6or greater elegance and a touch of lu-ury, try 2otel Ieri in the Barri G,tic or 2otel ?J>J on ;a Ram!la.
