Your Must-Do Waterfall List

#1 Schoolhouse Falls

Laurels loyal readers sound off on thier favorite waterfalls.

e had great response to our readers poll of local favorites introduced in February. The question for March was Which waterfall is your must-do if you just have one day to spend? There are so many beautiful falls in the region that just making the list is a mark of distinction. Coming in at number five is Cullasaja Falls, one of the most popular subjects for photographs and paintings in the region. It is the focal point of the Cullasaja River Gorge. At 200 tall it is an impressive feature of North Carolinas Mountain Waters

Scenic Highway. Readers chose Bridal Veil Falls as their fourth favorite. While the stream of water that cacades over the rocks is relatively small, it does drop an impressive 45 feet right beside Highway 64. Bridal Veil is the only falls in North Carolina under which one can drive a car. Eighty-foot high Dry Falls ranked number three in the poll. It is so-named because one can walk under it while remaining relatively dry, though its a good idea to protect your camera. If the sun is just right youll be able to see a beautiful rainbow. Recent renovation of the parking

area makes it a delightful stop for family photos. Runner-up for our competition is Whitewater Falls on the Whitewater River in the Jocassee Gorge. It is over 400 feet high and claims to be the highest falls east of the Mississippi. There are easily accessible rest landings and ramps for hiking and viewing. $2 per person. While these fine choices are all distinctive and beautiful in their own way, the falls that readers think worthy of a whole days visit is Schoolhouse Falls. In addition to being kid and pet friendly, it provides a host of activities and adventures such as hiking,

swimming in the plunge pool, photography, camping, fishing, exploring the landscape teeming with rare and endangered flora and fauna, and much more. Thanks to an innovative program between the Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center Youth Theater and Highlands High School, local students will explore the magic of drama, culminating with a public performance April 24-27.

n its seventh year, the PAC Youth Theater is presenting the period piece Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Students from Highlands High School and Blue Ridge School, as well as homeschooled students, look forward to the spring semester when the PAC Youth Theater picks up again. The auditions were held on February 9, with call backs on February 26 and now the after school rehearsals have begun. The cast is perfectly suited for the four sisters and their friends. Raina Trent will portray Jo, the aspiring writer. Destiny Ferra Martin will be Meg, the far more lady like older sister; Tiffany Preda has been cast as Beth, the younger, shy, gentle pianist; Kathryn Potts will take on the role of Amy, the beautiful and artistic sister. Marmee, the mother, is to be played by Taylor Crawford; Stella Wilson will be Hannah, the Irish housekeeper, and Sarah Ballentine will portray Aunt Marsh, a peppery wealthy aunt. Rounding out the cast will be Johnnie Perez as Laurie, and Billy Brennan as the tutor, John Brooke. Dean Zuch will make

a guest appearance as Mr. Lauren, Lauries grandfather. The Tech crew will consist of Pollyanna Ballentine, Katie Flynn, River Trent, Ivy Trent, Ashlynne Baumgarner, Taylor Baumgarner, Lindsey Lombard, Sara Lombard, and Madison Schandolph. Dr. Ronnie Spilton will be directing and instructing the PAC Youth Theater. Little Women is set in 1863 New England and centers around four sisters as they grow up, fall in love, and face life during the Civil War. With their father, Mr. March, away serving as a chaplain in the army, their mother attempts to hold things together at home. The girls employ creativity and courage to help their mother while pursuing their own dreams. Familiar to nearly everyone, Little Women is considered an American literary classic and will touch the hearts of every person in the audience. Little Women will be presented at the Highlands PAC on April 24, 25, 26, and 27. Tickets are available online at highlandspac.org, or by calling (828) 5269047. The Rotary Club of Highlands will stage its 25th Annual Golf Tournament at Highlands Country Club May 5.

heres no better way to welcome spring than to join your fellow golfers in the Rotary Clubs 25th Annual Golf Tournament, set for Monday, May 5, at Highlands Country Club. Registration is at 10:00 A.M. with a shotgun start at 11:00 A.M. Plan to get in a few practice swings at the driving range or try your putting on the practice green before the competition begins. Foursome teams will play a four-man scramble or captains choice. The Donald Ross-designed course was once the home of famed amateur golfer Bobby Jones. This is a great opportunity to play the oldest and most prestigious course in our area. Show your golf prowess on this course, which has challenged many fine golfers throughout the years. Mulligans can be purchased for $5 each. In addition to a number of raffle prizes, you will be awarded a prize if you are closest to the pin or have the longest drive. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the turn.

Proceeds from this event allow the Rotary Club to support their many charitable projects. Throughout the years, the Tournament has raised more than $100,000 to support community projects such as the Student Foreign Exchange Program, the Literacy Council, the local Boy Scout Troop, the Peggy Crosby Center, the Hudson Library, plus many other community groups. Get ready for an explosion of culinary delights at two unforgettable fundraising events hosted by Summit Charter the weekend before Independence Day. Beginning Thursday, June 26, from 6:00 to 11:00 P.M. a Vine and Dine patron party and gourmet winepairings dinner will be held at The Country Club of Sapphire Valley. A Food and Wine Tasting event with the regions finest chefs is scheduled for Sunday, June 29, from 6:00 to 11:00 P.M. on the schools campus. he Highlands Biological Station is hosting activities to celebrate Earth Week in April. Spend the eve of Earth Week in the Highlands Botanical Garden for the Earth Day of Service Volunteer Day on Saturday, April 19, from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. All ages are welcome to help maintain the health and beauty of the Botanical Garden, so please bring the family to work with the Gardens horticulturists for the whole day or a time slot that suits you. Lunch and tools will be provided. Contact our horticulturists at (828) 526-0188 to find out about planned tasks, to R.S.V.P., or with questions. On April 22 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M., Nature Center director Patrick Brannon will present a talk on the impact of discarded bottles along our mountain roads on the mortality of small mammals. Learn simple ways to help save the shrews! Each year, many shrews and rodents enter bottles in search of food or water and become entrapped, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of animals over time. Brannon will discuss the research he and his students have conducted to examine the severity of this phenomenon in our region and how you can help alleviate the problem. This lecture is appropriate for all ages and is free. Celebrate Arbor Day at the Botanical Garden with a Living with Trees tour guided by Horticulturist Ezra Gardiner on Friday, April 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Gardiner will discuss noteworthy trees of the Highlands Plateau, as well as their identification, residential use, and care. by Luke Osteen Highlands Annual Three River Fly Fishing Tournament is set for May 1-3,

f you dream about the challenges and excitement inherent in the streams that surround Highlands, youll want to carve out plenty of time for Highlands Annual Three River Fly Fishing Tournament, slated for May 1-3. The tourney is open to all anglers of all skill levels, and there are guided and non-guided competitions. The fun starts May 1 with a series of clinics to sharpen skills and whet appetites. A trio of workshops will be staged from 9:00 A.M. to noon May 1 at Harris Lake: A Ladies Casting Clinic with Joan Cabe; an Open Casting Clinic with local guides; and One on One Coaching for Tournament participants with the North Carolina Fly Fishing Team. The fly fishing wizards at The Highland Hiker will offer an equipment tune-up and expert advice from noon to 4:00 P.M. Members of the NC Fly Fishing Team will stage a casting competition at Pine Street Park from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Finally, the tournament offers a Fly Tying Clinic in the Lobby of the Old Edwards Inn from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M. Participants will learn the intricacies of the Jack Cabe Hopper and the lore behind this cherished portion of Highlands heritage. Jack Cabe (whose widow Mary will be leading the Ladies Clinic) was a native Highlander with an almost supernatural understanding of the local waterways and the rainbow and brown trout that flourished within. His Hoppers are the product of a lifetime of prowling the streams and seducing those fish. But thats all just fun preparation for the tournament. Therell be two days of spirited competition that test the mettle of beginners and seasoned anglers alike. From Highlands, the fishing boundary will have a northern boundary of US Hwy. 74, a western boundary of the rafting and delayed harvest sections of the Nantahala River, a southern boundary of the Hwy. 28 bridge on the Chattooga River, and an eastern boundary of the Davidson River and the East Fork of the French Broad River. Funds raised benefit the Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for Highlands High School graduates. The $500 entry fee for two-person teams includes an invitation to the opening night reception, lunches, a closing night dinner with prizes, and a fishing goody bag. Among the prizes offered by sponsors are weekend getaways, golf outings, dinners, fly rods and reels, waders, wading boots and fishing gear. Space is limited. Only the first 50 teams to register will be able to participate. Deadline for registration is April 1. Tour de Cashiers
by Luke Osteen Serious cyclists and weekend dilettantes are invited to enjoy every mile of the glute-pounding, calf-strangling Tour de Cashiers, set for Saturday, May 3, at the Village Green Commons in Cashiers.

yclists from across the Southeast are invited to the 22nd annual Tour de Cashiers Mountain Cycling Experience, set for Saturday, May 3, and spanning the scenic byways of Western North Carolina. Cyclists will follow one of three routes of up to 100 miles across Jackson, Macon and Transylvania Counties riding steep climbs and fast descents over 10,500 feet-plus of elevation changes. The ride will kick off at 9:00 A.M. at The Village Green Commons in Cashiers. Online registration is open at TourdeCashiers.com. On-site registration and postevent festivities will be held at the Commons pavilion. Returning riders will be welcomed back at the finish line with a hearty meal, drink and even a hot shower at the nearby Cashiers-Glenville Recreation and Community Centers. Participants also receive a commemorative tee shirt. Proceeds from the Tour support local community and economic development through the Cashiers Area Chamber according to executive director Stephanie Edwards. Major sponsors this year include the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, The Laurel Magazine, WHLC, Eagle Eye Inspections, McKee Properties and Indian Hills Water, who are joined by many bronze level financial supporters. Under the leadership of Dick Zacher and Robert Henderson, Support and Gear trackers will follow riders throughout the day to promote their safety and comfort. Dr. Jack Talmadge and a contingent of more than 60 parents, teachers and staff from the Summit Charter School will operate four rest stops along the way. Seventeen-year veteran volunteer Diane Stumm will organize registration onsite with a cadre of faithful assistants. Route guidance and emergency medical services will be provided by regional fire departments, rescue squads and other law enforcement agencies. The Tour de Cashiers offers adventurous athletic challenges suitable for the seasoned to beginner rider, said Tim OBrien, president and event chair of the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the ride.

Mother Nature: Such a Dresser!

ach spring a remarkable event occurs in the deciduous woodlands of the Highlands Plateau, the emergence of the spring wildflowers. As the first warm rays of sunlight touch the forest floor, thousands of plants awaken from their winter slumber to present an unmatched seasonal exhibit of beauty. They decorate the forest floor with a riot of color and fragrance advertising their beauty to pollinators and humans alike. Nowhere else in the natural world is this display so lavish as in the southern Appalachians. But within a few short weeks the leaves of the trees overhead will fill the canopy and rob the wildflowers of much needed sunlight. Known as ephemerals, due to their short season of productive growth, many of these plants will disappear back into dormancy, not to be seen again until next years spring emergence. Dont miss your opportunity to witness this ephemeral display of unsurpassed beauty. To mark this occasion the Highlands Biological Foundation will host Wildflower Whimsy on May 2 and 3 at the Highlands Biological Station. This two-day event is a celebration of spring ephemerals and will feature wildflower

walks, a native plant auction, and special guest speaker Peter Loewer, the Wild Gardener. On Friday, May 2 at 5:00 P.M., join us for guided tours of the Highlands Botanical Garden, a repository of over 450 species of native pants, to see and learn more about these fleeting spring wildflowers. At 6:00 P.M. Peter Loewer will present Wildflowers and Native Perennials-and Even a Few Exotics--for the Southeast at the Highlands Nature Center. Hop on to the Green

The splendor of the Cashiers Village Green makes the perfect backdrop for Easter Weekend.

esidents and visitors to the Cashiers area are invited to gather in The Village Green during Easter Weekend for two treasured community traditions. The Village Green hosts around 100 events each year, many of them for community enjoyment, says Jochen Lucke, Board Chair of The Village Green. It is one of the many reasons The Village Green is known as the heart of Cashiers. An Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Smore Kids Klothes will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 19, for children 10 and under. Bring your own basket to the Gazebo near The Village Play, and be on time, says Ann Self, Executive Director of The Village Green. The days event will also include a free hot dog lunch and visit with the Easter Bunny at The Village Green Commons. This is the fourth year of this event organized by Sharon James, the owner of SMores Kids Klothes in Cashiers. The Easter Egg Hunt has grown every year, says James, This year we are adding an Easter Bonnet Contest for the girls. Bonnets will be judged on creativity and presentation. Sharon James puts so much planning and work into the Easter Egg Hunt, says Self. This day promises even more fun for the entire family, Cashiers area churches will conduct the Community Easter Sunrise Service at 7:00 A.M. on Sunday, April 20, at the Gazebo and Lawn of The Village Green. Everyone is invited to celebrate Easter with music and scripture as the sun ascends over the mountains. What a wonderful way to laud the new creation in such a magnificent, natural setting, says Self. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. The Village Green provides a beautiful, free public space, however it is a nonprofit organization that depends on contributions to maintain the park and provide such an exceptional venue for the community. he 6th Annual Cashiers Spring Arts and Crafts Show will be held May 24 and 25 at the Cashiers Village Green. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley, the Spring Arts and Crafts Show will run from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. both Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. While admission is free, a donation of $3 or more will be accepted to help benefit local community service efforts. This juried event will showcase some of the finest artisans of the Southeast. With more than 60 exhibitors, featured art media will include clay, wood, fibers, glass, metal, watercolor, oils, and photography, and take the

form of jewelry, clothing, indoor and outdoor furniture, quilts, rugs, pottery, paintings, metal art, wooden bowls and ceramics, homemade specialties, and more. ighlands community leaders are taking a break from their daily duties to spend time in jail for the Highlands Playhouse to gain charitable donations for their release. The Highlands Playhouse Lock-Up, set for May 31, is a highspirited way to help the Playhouse with operating expenses. By agreeing to do time, Playhouse Jailbirds from the community go behind bars as they ask family, friends and business contacts to make donations to their bail to benefit the Highlands Playhouse to help continue the tradition of professional theatre. Community support is the driving force that enables the Playhouse to continue providing high quality professional entertainment. The Playhouse Lock-Up is a fun and exciting way for community leaders to show their support of arts and entertainment on the plateau, said Tammy Hernandez, Highlands Playhouse Managing Director. The arts play such an important role in our daily lives and we are blessed to have a dynamic community that will come together to support the Playhouse. The goal for each Jailbird is to raise $500 to help support the oldest theatre in North Carolina. Living theatre came to Highlands 75 years ago to serve as a gathering place for all who love live entertainment, served up by professional actors and other performers who make it their passion. Once arrested, Jailbirds will be transported to the mock jail in Town Square on Saturday, May 31, where they are encouraged to make additional calls to friends and business associates to raise money for their bail. ven if you dont know Janet Cummings, chances are you are a fan of her work. In 2002 she and Marjorie Fielding launched The Laurel Magazine. Janet and Marjorie dabbled in many entrepreneurial projects during their 30 year friendship, including craft shows, t-shirt design/retailing, and more. But their individual experience in the newspaper business gave them the boost they needed to start their own print icon, The Laurel, featuring the best art, music, theater, dining, and so much more of the Highlands and Cashiers lifestyle. Marjorie handles content while Janet manages advertising. Recently, Marjorie visited Janets home and saw some of her artwork. She said, Thats it! While Janet thinks of herself as more of an entrepreneur than an artist, her confidence as a painter is growing. Thanks to personal instruction with fine artist Velda Lovell Janets work is blossoming. She has painted everything from seascapes to landscapes to waterfalls. She hopes to one day be able to do portraits of her grandchildren (all ten of them, and every one her joy). She owes much of her recent success to an early artstart. A friend of her dads would send Janet little drawings of animals, etc., and ask her to copy them. She loved the exchange and was imprinted with art early on. Through marriage, family, and career, painting was always in the back of her mind. So when a chance to take lessons came along, she jumped on it. Her enthusiasm is a

testimonial to never giving up on ones dreams. She says, The off season is a great time to do my art and photography. She works from her own photos. Photography is second nature since she shoots for the magazine on occasion. If she sees a superb composition during her travels she stops to shoot it and then puts it in her photo reference file for later study. Painting isnt the only artistic passion she is currently pursuing. As a high school band student, she never lost

her love for music. So in addition to painting lessons, she is taking violin instruction. Her left brain is content to manage magazine advertising, but her right brain, at last, is doing the happy dance! She says, I dream of a day when I drive in an RV and stop and paint whatever strikes my fancy. Tis a noble pursuit, and one we can all model. Do what you love. Love what you do. And when you can do that as well as Janet, life is so fine!

An Elemental Artist

My work explores the primitive and mysterious act of creativity, stripping away the trappings of the modern world, I return to the basic elements of fire, earth, water, and air. - Susan Barrett

usan Barrett, acclaimed ceramicist of Western North Carolina, found her calling some 20 years ago at the University of Arizona, Tucson. There she discovered how to fuse the earths four basic elements into beautiful earthenware. Though she declared chemistry as her major, her artistic exploration fueled her passion for her lifes true calling, pottery. A few years later she joined her brothers and mother in the Brevard area, eager to be part of North Carolinas fine art and craft community. Since then, she has shown in the states and nations most prestigious galleries, museums, and guilds. She has work in the permanent collection of the Mint Museum, she has exhibited at the Smithsonian, and she has participated in international juried competitions in the United States, Japan, and Germany. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the Piedmont Craftsmen, and Hand Made in America. And while she makes winning awards look easy, working with clay is an odd amalgam of gentleness and fury. It takes a month of careful turning, trimming, curing, burnishing, slip-painting, wax application, and detailing before the finished greenware (work that is air-dried and very fragile) is made or broken, literally, in its final transformation: a baptism in a blazing fire. 40 | April 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com

Barrett says, Even though the most unpredictable part is the firing, I still have to be very aware of each stage of the vessels. After I throw them, I burnish them with stones (a practice borrowed from the Plains Indians). I have to be aware of their state of dryness. Greenware cant be too wet or too dry in the burnishing process or the surface will suffer. It is patient work. If she hurries the process, there is a price to pay. She says, If things arent as they should be, I quit and come back to a piece. If I am impatient, I will blow up all my hard work. Imagine working a full month on a vessel, only to have it crack or explode in the final phase. She adds, I continue to push my process, merging ancient shapes with modern. I keep refining, experimenting with the surface design and ornamentation. I am exploring more elaborate sculptural shapes, combining wheel work with hand-building. Since its phenomenal growth from a corner of the town library to a world-class, six-building visual arts center on a six-acre campus, this community catalyst inspires and educates residents and visitors through all forms of the visual arts. A key component in The Bascoms growing reputation for excellence is its outstanding education department, featuring Frank Vickery, Will Barclift, Carley Haber and Sara Hill. Executive Director and long-time supporter Bob Fisher says, These instructors are innovative, hardworking and missionfocused. They all are passionate about art and The Bascom, and they are making a positive difference in our community. Frank Vickery serves as Ceramics Program Manager and has been working in clay for more than 20 years, many as instructor in the clay arts. Besides wheel throwing, Frank also has extensive experience in hand-building and embellishing clay forms. Now Director of Education, Will Barclift, began teaching youth classes at The Bascom in 2012. As Youth and Outreach Coordinator, he was instrumental in building The Bascoms heralded art curriculum. His background includes roles as Summer Programs Coordinator at ArtSeed, Art Advisor at Linearis Institute and Preparator at John Berggruen Gallery, all in San Francisco. Sara Hill is Adult Program Coordinator. Her eclectic artistic interests began with welding, then an obsession with printmaking. Hill loves nature and all things outdoors, which inspire the themes of her artwork. Youth and Outreach Coordinator Carley Haber enjoys teaching creative arts, especially photography, painting, sculpture and ceramics. She holds a Masters in Art Education from Western Carolina University, and spent six months in South Africa teaching art in a local high school. he Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festivals 33rd season is laced with exciting installments of its popular Salon at Six series. Kay and Frank Cohen will host the season-opener featuring harpist Valerie Von Pechy Whitcup and flutist Lea Kibler, Saturday, June 14. Ms. Von Pechy Whitcup is a symphony harpist with over 30 seasons as principal harpist with the Florida Philharmonic. Shes also served as the harp instructor at the University of Miami Frost School of Music for 30 years. Ms. Kibler is a flute professor at Clemson Universitys Department of Performing Arts Profesor. Kibler has performed as a member of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra as principal flute. Festival favorite The Vega String Quartet will perform Mussorgskys Pictures at an Exhibition at The Bascom Tuesday, June 17. The Highlands Cashiers Players Mama Wont Fly, set for May 22-25 and May 29 - June 1 at the Highlands Performing Arts Center, is a wickedly funny Southern situation comedy.

onnie Cushman Earman is the director of the upcoming Highlands Cashiers Players spring play, Mama Wont Fly, a raucous Southern comedy written by the same team that wrote Dixie Swim Club and Dearly Departed. Earman has acted in several HCP productions over the years. Many remember her performance as Lexie in Dixie Swim Club. She made her directing debut last spring with the smash hit Love, Loss and What I Wore, which included 22 actresses, 85 costume changes, and players aged 8 to 70...no easy task for a novice director. Earman studied for years under the expert tutelage of well-known actress Collin Wilcox Paxton, both on and off stage. As a member and manager of The Instant Theatre Company, she embraced all aspects of theatre from scripted pieces to improv. She brings her love of live theater, the wisdom of her mentor, and her own unique vision to HCPs spring play, Mama Wont Fly. Assisting the director is the talented Kevin Murphy of Franklin. Murphy most recently starred in the winter play, Weekend Comedy as well as Almost Maine and Murder Among Friends. He is a graduate of the Savannah College of Arts and Design with a degree in the performing arts. Mama Wont Fly has a stunning array of talented local actors along with an amazing tech crew. Earmans cast and crew have already begun working to bring magic to the stage. Mark your calendar for this funny, Southern production. Part of its irresistible formula is the fact that the restaurant is situated on the shores of Highlands Lake Sequoyah, a stress-free setting as sensually indulgent as a visit to the spa. Even when the roomy dining verandah grows boisterous (the place invites group celebrations), theres an unmistakable aura of tranquility. Of course, part of that implicit tranquility is buoyed by the expansive wine list. Owner and Executive Chef Andrew Figel have assembled a deep wine inventory ranging from the modestly priced yet surprisingly playful 2008 Calera chardonnay to the marvelous 1992 Harlan Estate cabernet sauvignon, the oenological equivalent of a Renoir landscape. Delve into this wine list and youll be amply rewarded. But who are we kidding? On the Verandah is a 30-yearold Highlands treasure because of its menu the extraordinary dishes produced by Chef Andrew and Pastry Chef Sid Jackson. Some people opt for ordering a clutch of Small Plates for a tapas bar experience -- Fried Beer-Battered Calamari with Ancho Chile Sauce; Cornmeal Fried Blue Crab Claws drizzled with Tabasco Beurre Blanc; sublime Spinach & Feta Phyllo Puffs in Fresh Basil Tomato Cream; Marine Lobster Piccata with Lemon Thyme Beurre Blanc and Capers; Eggplant Manicotti supported by Herbed Goat Cheese, Piquillo Vinaigrette. Its like treating your taste buds to an around-the-world cruise. My sweetie launched her Verandah evening with a bowl of Mushroom Soup. Rich and earthy, topped by a dollop of sour cream and dill, this was a bowl of joy a thousand miles removed from what slides out of a can of Campbells Soup. 52 | April 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com

I went with the Buttermilk Caesar Salad an unimaginative choice, but I find that the presentation of a salad is the canary-in-the-coalmine for a restaurant experience. This Caesar didnt disappoint the lettuce was crisp and cold and adorned with pan-fried croutons, toasted pumpkin seeds and shaved Grana Padano cheese. Tricia was presented with Seared Scallops over Angel Hair Pasta, drenched in an agreeably provocative Ginger Scallion Sauce. The scallops were wonderfully prepared and played upon the tongue like silk. My Black Pepper Crusted New York Strip was bathed in a Pink Peppercorn Brandy Cream. It was the kind of dish I know Ill be able to recall fondly years from now, probably in the middle of the night. Since weve been talking about the unmistakable aura of comfort that informs On the Verandah, let me make a case for its mashed potatoes. For me, mashed potatoes have always exerted a gentle take-me-home pull on my heart and stomach. Theyre the epitome of comfort food. Chef Andrews mashies, which accompanied my steak, were exquisite in their construction. Rich, creamy, with just enough texture to let you know theyd just been mashed by hand, they somehow corrected what had been a cold, drizzly day larded with deadlines and disappointments. Since my Moms been dead for eight years, I guess its safe to say These were the best mashed potatoes Ive ever had! I suppose if youve had a particularly awful day or week you could just order a big bowl and settle in. But dont do it theres just too much good stuff on the menu! Well, Ive run out of space and I havent even mentioned our fabulous desserts Apple Raspberry Pie and Crme Brulee nor On the Verandahs deservedly famous Sunday Brunch. ames Crandall, recently awarded The Laurels Star of the Bar at The Gamekeepers Tavern in Sapphire, started his restaurant career at the age of 14 as a dishwasher. It didnt take long to graduate to bussing tables. A couple of years later he started bussing tables at The Gamekeepers. Thanks to his engaging personality he was promoted to server. Mat Kowal of The Gamekeepers Tavern knew a good man when he saw one. He moved James up the ranks to bartender. Having held so many positions, James knows just about every job in the tavern, which explains why in five short years he is now service manager. Its no wonder he has risen through the ranks so rapidly. He is eager to learn, a quick study, a loyal employee, and this month, Star of the Bar. He and Mat have talked about moving the bar offerings to a new level. James has been doing a lot of research on the latest bar trends. In fact, hes

been reinventing retro drinks going all the way back to Prohibition. He resurrects old, sometimes overlooked reliables such as Vermouth, Bourbon, and Gin. Then he tweaks mixed drink ingredients with a dash of this, a sprig of that, and gives the concoction his own personal twist. He only uses fresh fruit and juices, as well as house made syrups, so there are no preservatives or aftertastes in his creations. His latest reinvention is Aprils featured drink, which approaches gin in a new way. Imagine cooling down on a warm day with this satisfying twist on an old classic. hroughout the course of a week, I may taste as many as 60 -70 wines. Over the years the amount of poorly made wines I try has greatly diminished. I recommended a Cabernet to a gentleman last week and he asked me to try it with him. The wine was thick and rich with dark black fruit and hints of coconut and overripe banana, finishing with dark chocolate and more aromas of coconut. We both loved the wine and he commented that if he had tasted it blind he would not have guessed it was a Cabernet. I immediately understood what he meant and began to wonder: Should a Cabernet smell and taste like one? is that a benchmark of a well-made wine? I have found that with the global cross pollination of winemakers, techniques and grapes, that varietal correctness has become blurred. I taste Sauvignon Blanc that tastes like Verdejo. Merlot that tastes like Amarone. I cannot answer the previous questions, but I know that tasting wine is more exciting now. I describe a wine with new unorthodox descriptors. Im visualizing a city center experience that invokes the energy and passion of the traditions of cuisine that we are exploring, said Figel when asked about the new location. Im intrigued about the outside-in pointof-view and the opportunity for passersby to take a glance past our copper sign and into our windows. Copper is a dominant component of the dcor at Cyprus and it will continue to be so. Its fitting that the element itself is essential to all living organisms as is the consumption of food. The characteristics of copper and that of the restaurant itself share numerous qualities and the continuity of this detail is prevalent to Cyprus as a whole as copper was principally mined on the Greek island Cyprus, hence the origin of the name Cyprium. As every story has its three-act structure, Cyprus finds itself ascending through the second act with its audience dying with anticipation of how it will all end. Figel and Lasley both agree it will be the combination of Tommys subtlety and attention to detail interlaced with Nicks energy and excitement that will allow this dream to become a world class restaurant.

Ramp It Up!

he Southern Appalachian tradition of spring ramp dinners dates back to the days before canned foods and trucked-in groceries were available to alleviate a low fiber, vitamin poor winter diet of potatoes, salted meat, and dried fruit and vegetables. Being the first green food mountaineers had seen in months, ramps were a real cause for celebration. The high sulphur content of ramps is responsible for their (in)famous odor. At some point each March during my elementary school years, my classmates and I were threatened with suspension if we were to show up to class having eaten a ramp supper the night before. Quite a few of us tried to hold our teachers to their word, but none of us ever made it off the school grounds any sooner than our classmates. Some of us did spend the rest of the school day at a desk out in the hallway, though. A little-known fact is that the name Chicago is derived from chicagoua, the Miami-Illinois word for ramps. The etymology of the English word ramps requires a little digging (pun intended). by American Indians would have been familiar with the European wild leek Allium ursinum, which went by the common name of ramson. My grandfather likes his ramps best pan-fried with squirrel brains. The combination was never to my liking even before I left off eating red meat over a decade ago, a fact contributing to my grandfathers opinion that I dont know whats good. Much more to my taste are two other stovetop combinations: ramps and scrambled eggs and ramps and fried potatoes. It is also possible to get a little fancy with ramps. Ramp pesto compliments omelets superbly. Additional preparation options include oven-roasted la brussels sprouts and stir-fried. There is a simple trick to decreasing the strong sulphurassociated odor and taste of ramps. Begin cooking on the stovetop with a covered pan. After steam has built for a couple of minutes, completely remove the lid to release it and the sulphur it contains. If the dish is to continue cooking atop the stove, leave the lid slightly cracked upon replacing it.

it appear to a fish to be something natural on the water. With spin fishing or bait casting, you cast the weight of the lure or bait and the line goes along for the ride. In fly fishing, you cast the weight of the line and the line pulls the lightweight fly through the air. This cast is what most people associate with the sport. That beautiful slow arc of line as you cast backward and forward, delivering the almost invisible fly to the spot on the water where you see a fish or expect the fish to be holding looking for food. Its the cast that has intimidated many new fly fishermen trying to learn the sport on their own. Casting with a spinning rod and reel is easy, intuitive and quickly mastered. Casting a fly rod takes a brief learning curve to understand a handful of sometimes counterintuitive basics that work together to create that long smooth arc of the cast. However, once learned, it begins to feel very natural. As with sports like golf or tennis, its much quicker to learn with some initial hands-on instruction of the basics before you build bad habits that have to be broken down and corrected. This is where we lost many newcomers to the sport years ago. You needed a father, grandfather, or friend to bring you into the sport and teach you these basics. Today, there are fly shops in almost every city that offer casting instruction. If you have never held a fly rod before, a two hour lesson is typically all it takes to teach you to make a back cast and forward cast. At that point you should be ready to begin practicing on your own, recognizing a bad cast when you make one and understanding how to correct it. As with most worthwhile pursuits, there is no instant gratification, but with practice you will become more comfortable and relaxed with the rod, reel, and line. Now youre ready to begin to enjoy fly fishing.

pringtime in the mountains means playtime for those of us fortunate enough to live here. If youve never been a tourist in your own town, youre missing some of the most beautiful and sought after experiences on the planet. North Carolina and North Georgia lakes, rivers trails and waterfalls form one of natures most exciting and awe inspiring playgrounds. And you dont have to be a hardcore adventurist to enjoy it. Heres what you need to know and wear to venture out with confidence. These items can range from simple and functional to techno and stylish. But there are specific qualities to look for regardless of which way you go.

Todays versions are lightweight with a narrower profile. Many have water reservoirs built in with a straw, so you get a hands-free quench with the simple turn of your head another fun extra that you can always add to your adventure arsenal later. But for now, the last thing on our list will suffice. Shorts or light, breathable pants. Most avid hikers swear by the convertible type. You can start out in pants, zip open the knees to let in a breeze, and zip off the bottoms altogether when youre ready for shorts. A water bottle. Your pack usually has a place for two. You can go high-tech with a bottle that has an ultraviolet lid that instantly purifies water scooped from a lake or river. mer crops such as tomatoes, pumpkins, and beans are often planted in April, awaiting the warmth of summer. A kitchen garden can serve as a solid foundation for a familys good health, providing fresh nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Some fruits that grow well in our southern mountain region are: fig, persimmon, pawpaw, apple, blueberry, alpine strawberry, and kiwi. Culinary and medicinal herbs, too, are an important part of a kitchen garden. Herbs such as thyme, echinacea, comfrey, and dandelion as well as many native herbs such as elder and goldenseal thrive here. I look forward to exploring a variety of topics related to the kitchen garden and beyond in this new column! I prefer the organic approach to gardening as it encourages biodiversity, employing the use of beneficial insects and soil microbes which support healthy plants. Synthetic chemicals which destroy life in the soil and insects, including beneficial ones, have no place in an organic garden. Organic food is healthier, as the soil profile accounts for nutrients and trace minerals that are not provided by conventional fertilizers. Living soil also helps to make nutrients available for use by plants. Critical to success of your garden is selecting a good site. Agricultural sites are often located in or near floodplain areas where the richest soil has accumulated and a water source is nearby. Our clay soils hold water and nutrients well, but can lead to drainage issues, so its important not to site a garden at a low point where water collects. An open, sunny spot that receives at least five hours of direct light each day is best. Notice how the angle of the sun changes from winter to summer, also morning to evening. Sites with good southern exposure are ideal; avoid the north side of buildings or large trees. Access is also important. I have my kitchen garden sited close enough to my home that I can fetch a quick handful of lettuce before mealtime or snip some thyme while cooking dinner.

any golfers have an awful time hitting 3 woods, especially off the turf. What you need to do is treat this club as if it were your pitching wedge. Most golfers know the distance of their full wedge. Usually they are hitting it as a second shot on a long par 4 or a par 5 and trying to hit it as hard as they can. This ruins their tempo and usually results in a poor shot. What I suggest is to try swinging it with the same effort as their full pitching wedge. Its not really the swing speed that gives the 3 wood distance, its the design of the club longer shaft, lower loft and hotter club face. I suggest going to the practice tee with your wedge and 3 wood and alternate full shots between them, trying to keep the same tempo with both. Your goal is to swing the 3 wood as if it were a full wedge. I think you will start hitting longer and more consistently solid shots with the 3 wood. Dont try to force things with the 3 wood let the club do the work. Make sure with either club while you are practicing that when you finish your swing your weight is on the outside of your left or forward foot and your belt buckle is facing the target with your back heel off the ground. I try to think of Freddy Couples swing. Watch his full wedge tempo and then the 3 wood. You cant tell the difference in his tempo.

Catch Picklesimer Rockhouse Falls after (or during) a good rain and you will be treated to a beautiful display as the water cascades over the sixty foot cliff and disappears into the rhododendron in the creek below. A rock house is an open cave with a high roof, which allows you to walk behind the veil of this waterfall easily. Turn right onto Blue Valley Road, and follow the road about 3.6 miles to a T intersection with national forest information signs. Turn left. Franklin and Katy Baumgarner

verybody in Cashiers loved Franklin and Katy Baumgarner and they are remembered with a smile. James Franklin Kay Baumgarner, whose twin was Frances Lombard, was born in Whiteside Cove on June 12, 1915, the son of Rev. Frank Baumgarner and Molina Ellen Galloway. Franklin grew up on a farm and first saw his future wife, Katy Ann Bradley, born October 31, 1912, when, as a boy, he helped plow land for her mother in Cashiers. Katy was the daughter of Frank Bradley and Tiny Hoxit. In 1937, Franklin and Katy got married and settled in Cashiers. They had five children, Shirley, Doyle, Gayle, Joanne and Roy, all still living in the Cashiers area. It was a happy household with constant laughter and Franklin became known for his practical jokes and sunny disposition. Katys father, Frank Bradley, was for many years the overseer at High Hampton and when she was young, Katy also worked at High Hampton making salads in the kitchen and at a later time she worked in the housekeeping department. Before going to work she would cook a big breakfast at home and always made extra gravy and biscuits to leave on the stove for anyone who might drop 76 | April 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com

by to help themselves. She never turned a soul away from her door and taught her children to not be judgmental. After work, she and Franklin would sit on the front porch of their home near todays charter school and anyone walking by would stop and talk awhile. Baumgarner Builders was Franklins business and he did such a good job that one customer ran an ad in the newspaper praising the excellent house he and his sons built for her. In the late 1950s, Brad Pells crew, including Franklin and his sons were building a house that Mark Zachary passed by every day walking home from grammar school. Mark, fascinated by the building process, started hanging around and soon Franklin had put Mark to work at five cents a day, carrying nails and boards. Thats the kind of man Franklin was. He could be generous to a fault. Helping other people, talking, hunting and laughing, delighted Franklin. After 47 years of marriage, Katy died at the age of 72 and seven years later, in 1992, Franklin was killed in a car wreck in front of the Cornucopia. They are buried at the Upper Zachary Cemetery.

A Club Was Born

n the early 1950s as the Highlands area grew in popularity, it became apparent that if you did not own property on the environs of the clubs there, that play on their golf courses would not continue to be available. Gene Howerdd Sr. was retiring from Georgia Pacific and decided to look for property to build a golf course community nearby. In 1954, the Howerdd family acquired 12,000 plus or minus acres of land in Sapphire. The property included approximately 8,500 acres of land, an inn (originally known as Fairfield Inn) and a 200-acre lake (known as Lake Fairfield) on the North side of Highway 64, together with approximately 3,500 acres of land, some of which had been farmland, on the south side of Highway 64. This area was perfect for a mountain course as the terrain varied by no more than 12 feet across the valley floor! The farm land area included an old farmhouse which is still there today. rant and Club, the original building is the oldest structure in Sapphire Valley. The property was owned by members of the Tatum family who were part of the original ownership group of Lake Toxaway. This land was deeded to them when the Lake Toxaway Dam broke and the 250,000-acre tract was divided up among the partners. It was then renamed The Tatum Sky Club. The Tatum family owned a Club in Miami called the Tatum Surf Club and had visions of a fly-in resort in Western North Carolina. How Mr. Howerdd found out the property could be purchased is another chapter! The Howerdd Family acquired the property and planning, development and operations began immediately and The Sapphire Valley Inn and Country Club, known today as Sapphire Valley Resort, was born.

eddings are like hurricanes each is unique, yet each follows a predictable sequence of natural laws. But if you plan carefully, you can emerge from both alive and sane. And if you are meticulous in your preparations and develop the right frame of mind and allow yourself a bit of flex-

ibility, youll have memories that youll cherish for life. Let me explain. In 2006, Jim Vance was competing in a Monte Carlo triathlon when he became smitten with the idea of owning a vineyard like the glorious fields he discovered in the Italian and French countryside. The area was so mov-

ing that before I left, I said to my wife, Deedee, I would like to buy a vineyard. Two or three months later, the couple bought an apple orchard closer to home near Highlands. In 2007, they began the planting process. Things moved along, and they now own 20 acres in the Highland

Plateau, with 10 acres under vine. When their daughter Maddie got engaged to her fianc, Pete Bartlett she knew that she wanted to get married at the family vineyard. The Vineyard was only 2.5 hours from Atlanta, which was great for Petes family and my family comes

We also love the property and we had spent many weekends there and it seemed like the perfect spot. Maddie and Pete wanted a wedding that fit their personalities. Their wedding style was

rustic chic and they wanted their wedding to have a very natural design element. Attire for the bridal party set the tone with cowboy boots and cocktail length lace dresses for the bridesmaids and blue and white checkered shirts for the groomsmen. reception. I Do Events felt that Max LeBlanc and Alison Lueker of Sun In My Belly would be the perfect match for their wedding. After one visit Maddie and Pete knew that they had found their caterer. Max and Alison are used to working where there is no kitchen and partnered with Professional Party Rentals of Cashiers to create a workspace and the results were rave reviews. The bride and her Mother were hands on with creating many of the dcor items and had quite a few DIY projects. They collected vintage silver trays, and painted them with chalk board paint to create signs like, Maddie and Petes Wedding, and Valet Parking. They made floral containers from tall twigs and branches which were attached to wine bottles with twine. The bottles were then filled with hydrangeas and lined the stone steps leading to the ceremony. Personalized pillows were placed on the pews which the family purchased and refinished. Handkerchiefs were collected from vintage shops and were given out to the female guests as they arrived for the ceremony. Bottles of wine from the vineyard with Maddie and Petes customized wine label were given as favors.

full-page advertisement in an April 1st edition of USA Today introduced Burger Kings new Left-handed Whopper with meat, cheese, and condiments rotated 180 degrees for the convenience of its left-handed customers. Burger King released a follow-up report the next day saying that thousands of customers requested the new burger while many others requested their own right handed version. None of the customers sued BK for what was clearly early onset of French fry clogs in their arteries. The April 1995 edition of Discover Magazine reported that the esteemed wildlife biologist Aprile Pazzo had

found a new animal species in Antarctica. She named it the Hot-headed, Naked Iceborer. Pazzo claimed that these little creatures had bony plates in their hard little heads that were fed by thousands of blood vessels causing them to become sizzling hot. They fed on penguins seen from below the ice. In a matter of seconds theyd burn through the ice and BAM! Penguin pate. Pazzo theorized that the mysterious disappearance of Antarctic explorer Philippe Poisson could finally be explained. He probably looked like a giant penguin to the borers. By the way, Aprile (April) Pazzo (Italian for crazy) was a dead give-away. Even so, Discover Magazine received more mail

for this article than any other in their history. The 1982 April 1st edition of The Daily Mail reported that a local company had recalled 10,000 faulty brassieres. Their copper underwire was interfering with electronic equipment. The manufacturers claimed that when the wire came in contact with body heat and nylon it created static electricity. That, in turn, interfered with radio and television frequencies causing static and other viewing problems. In some cases it set off fire alarms. The chief engineer of British Telecom ordered all his female lab employees to disclose what kind of bras they were wearingproving once more, theres plenty of

boobs everywhere. And for those of us concerned about GMO foods, heres one to pickle your parsnip. On April 1, 2002, Tesco, a British supermarket chain, announced that it was stocking a genetically-modified whistling carrot. It was designed to grow special little air holes along its sides so that when steamed the carrots would whistle. And we thought beans were the only musical fruit. While diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss, a long-term diversified investment strategy based on your investment goals and risk tolerance can create a winning approach. Jadeybug and Marley

ast August we ran an article about Jadeybug, a local three-year old who has juvenile diabetes. Jade desperately needed a specially trained dog to alert her mom to a serious drop or rise in her blood sugar. Dogs, with their keen sense of smell, can detect such shifts long before medical sensors can. They haven't invented a machine yet with a nose as good as Marley's. And who is Marley? Marley is a black Labrador just one year old, trained as part of D.A.D. (Diabetic Alert Dog) program. Thanks to the amazing financial support of the local community, $25,000 was raised to purchase Marley, who moved in with Jade in January this year. Since then, Jade and her new best furry friend have been constant companions. Brittany, Jade's mom, can't say enough about community response. She says, "I tried to write everyone to thank them, but I might have missed a few people. I want to extend my gratitude to those who donated money, volunteered time, and cared for my daughter Jade. We are so thankful. She talks all the time about how amazing Marley is and how much she loves her. I am grateful for the relief it has brought me. I am still on-

call 24/7, but now I have an amazing helper to alert me much earlier when there is a problem." In just three short months there have already been many situations where Marley has caught a lifethreatening change in blood sugar as much as a half hour before monitors registered the swing. The family has become so dependent upon their alert dog, Brittany says, "I can't even remember what it was like without a dog l ike Marley." When there is reason to alert, Marley turns up the energy and paws insistently at Brittany's leg or arm. There have been a couple of times when Brittany thought perhaps it was a

false alarm. Sure enough, even when Jade showed no evidence of a sugar shift and her blood tested normal, within minutes, things dramatically changed. Marley has been 100 percent, right down the line. Brittany said, "Once Jade's pump site failed. I checked her about an hour after she was done eating. Her level was about 300. An hour later I came back and she was over 600. Normal is 80-180. 600 is crazy high. Marley was going nuts and Jade felt awful. We got the level down quickly and changed the pump site. Within two hours she was down to 200. Around 10:00 P.M. I had a bad feeling so I checked Jade. Marley followed me. She started alert-

ing me immediately. Jade's level was 48. In one day she went from 600 to 48. We got her back up and she was fine, but this kind of up and down is exhausting and frightening." It is exhausting for Marley, too. Brittany has to be sure Marley gets enough rest to be on guard at night, the time she needs her most. Brittany says, "There are so many who need an alert dog and simply can't afford it. Now that we have Marley, I am still collecting money to assist other families in getting a D.A.D. Surgery May Not be the Best Choice, he writes, 600,000 Americans have back surgery each year. The rate of back surgery in the US is at least 40 percent higher than any other country. Research suggests that of the 500,000 plus disc surgeries that are performed annually as many as 90 percent might be unnecessary and ineffective. Studies show that at best 50 percent will get relief (this may be complete relief or just some) from back surgery, 25 percent will stay the same and 25 percent will get worse. These are not great odds. Did you know that there is a diagnostic code for failed low back surgery? Every year there are 50,000 documented cases of failed low back surgery. Another misconception is that if you have a disc bulge or herniated disc then surgery will solveyour problem. In a study of 5,000 people with low back pain, half had bulging discs and half did not. In each group halfhad pain and half did not. Conclusion: a disc problem was no indication of whether someone would have back pain and having surgery to fixa bulging disc would be of no consequence in solving the problem. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Plan, a health maintenance organization affiliated with the universitys School of Medicine, has adopted landmark guidelinesfor the management of chronic low back pain. As of Jan. 1, 2012, candidates for spine surgery must receive prior authorization to determine medical necessity, which includes verification that the patient has tried and failed a threemonth course of conservative management that included physical therapy, chiropractic therapy, and medication.

he Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation has announced that an extraordinary gift of $1 million will be contributed by its lead philanthropist, Jane Woodruff, and that it will be matched by a $1 million gift from Mission Health. I am very pleased to make this gift to HCH, which has provided compassionate and quality health care to families in our local area for more than three generations, said Mrs. Woodruff. I hope the community will join me in continuing our strong tradition of philanthropy, so essential to keeping our

hospital up-to-date. Since HCH came into being more than 60 years ago, philanthropy has been the lifeblood of the hospital. Todays Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation was created in 1985 as a supporting organization to HCH through a comprehensive program of promoting and administrating charitable contributions. The role of the Foundation will not change under the Mission affiliation, and the Foundation will remain a separate organization with its own local Board of Directors. Mission Health very much respects and appreciates Ms. Woodruffs com-

alentines Day was filled with a double dose of love at CHHS this year, when a very special sister and brother duo entered our lives. Five-year-old Shepherd/Mountain Cur mixes Jessie and her brother Knox were brought to our no-kill shelter after wandering as strays in the DuPont State Forest in Cedar Mountain. These canines are incredibly sweet, gentle and affectionate, and they have a deep loving bond for each other. We found that out the first night in our care, when after placing them in separate kennels for their dinner, they refused to eat. When we moved them in together to the one double-sized dog run that we have, they both gobbled down their meal and laid down to sleep side-by-side. Both Jessie and Knox walk very well on a leash without pulling, and both are completely housetrained. They would do well as members of an active family, but would also be just as happy in a calm, quiet household with older companions--as long as they stay together. We realize that it is oftentimes hard to find a forever family willing to take two dogs. Many fans of CHHS will

remember the story of Shyann and Grace, the motherdaughter Husky/Malamutes. They had been together nine years, and we were not about to separate them. It took nearly a year at our shelter, but we found the perfect family for them in South Carolina where they now live in a happy, loving home. We want the same future for Jessie and Knox, so we will waive the adoption fee for the second sibling. Adopt both of these sweet and gentle canine companions for only $85, and that includes already being spayed/neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/ heartworm preventative, and 30 days of free pre-paid pet health insurance. pring is in the air and more of our local harbingers of spring are popping up each day. Here are some fun facts about our local spring flora and fauna. Wood frogs are not only just one of the first amphibians to emerge in spring to breed in wetlands, but are also capable of partially freezing and they sound like turkeys. The woods around Western North Carolina are renowned for their spring wildflowers. Species like the showy orchis (yes, thats spelled correctly and it is a wild orchid), trout lilies, and trilliums carpet the forest floor with color. Speaking of trilliums, WNC is home to the largest concentration of trillium species. The area around Highlands is a designated Important Bird Area in large part because of the large number of migratory warblers and other species that arrive here each

spring to breed. The spotted salamander may be large and covered with bright yellow and orange spots, but is almost never seen outside its late winter-early spring breeding season, when it can gather by the hundreds in temporary ponds and wetlands. The Pink-shell Azalea is endemic to the southern Blue Ridge Escarpment. Some of the largest populations and most stunning areas to see this species in bloom each spring are around Cashiers and the Panthertown Valley. eals on Wheels, known in Macon County as Home Delivered Meals, provides a midday meal to people, who cant prepare a nutritious meal for themselves, generally due to health or age-related medical issues. Home Delivered Meals began in the Highlands area in September 1998 when Rotarian and then-Mayor Buck Trott petitioned the Macon County Department on Aging to establish a program in Highlands. At the first organizational meeting Trott found a number of fellow Rotarians and eager non-Rotarian volunteers to drive and deliver the meals. Home Delivered Meals had begun and quickly became known as Meals. Meals has continued to operate since then with over half of its meals delivered by Rotarians and spouses of Rotarians. Volunteers and Rotarians have become good friends and work as a group as they trade, swap and cover meal delivery days in this five-day a week program. Meals volunteers have included Tony and Isabel Chambers, Pat Moore, Rick Siegel, Luther Turner, Buck Trott, David Rohrer, Dave Jellison, Selwyn Chalker, Jimmy Lowe and Lester Norris. Rotarian spouses Caroline Cook and Mary Berry have been long time volunteers. Occasionally, weather conditions prevent delivery, and the program does not include holidays. Caroline Cook goes beyond the call of duty by covering the holidays with home-prepared meals for delivery. She and George Henry have delivered the meals continuously since the programs inception, a remarkable service commitment. Volunteers also check on their clients welfare. This is always a point of concern for the volunteers. With a smile and a warm meal, clients and volunteers often become good friends. The tremendous tasks of the Literacy Council are predicated on the cheerful service of a small army of volunteers.

lthough April is National Volunteer Month, we want our very special volunteers to know that we cherish their efforts each and every day! The folks volunteering their time at the Literacy Council do so in many ways: through tutoring, maintenance, meal preparation, child care, kids camp, and sometimes by just being a friend, mentor, or confidant to someone. Sometimes, tutors come in for extra sessions. Other times, unexpected individuals show up to join their sessions. They are all so flexible and generous with their time and it is very inspirational to see the bonds they build with their students. Some volunteers have been with the Literacy Council for many years; others have joined us this year. Some volunteers do double-duty as both tutors and board members; others might not even know they are volunteering until they enter our offices and we need a piece of furniture assembled or something heavy hauled away.
