INNOVATIVE TEACHING & LEARNING OF SCIENCE THROUGH INQUIRY-BASED SCIENCE EDUCATION (IBSE)

La Main la Pte (LAMAP) is an inquiry-based science education programme that was introduced in France in !!" by prominent academicians# namely# $eorges %harpa&# Pierre Lena and '(es )u*r*+ ,he programme was later launched by the French Ministry o- .ducation in primary schools and since then# the number o- schools adopting this approach has multiplied+ ,hrough the LAMAP approach in science learning# children are led to disco(er and learn science spontaneously and naturally# as they construct &nowledge using materials and equipment -amiliar to them+ /tudents are e0posed to situations that arouse their curiosity towards natural phenomena# stimulating them to as& questions and disco(er the answers as they mo(e through the process oscienti-ic in(estigations+ ,he LAMAP programme not only encourages acti(e participation in science lessons but also de(elops the spirit o- teamwor& among children+ 1y introducing children to argumentation# LAMAP purports to gi(e a better understanding o- words that are spo&en# written and read+ 1y encouraging children to debate among themsel(es when they sol(e problems# LAMAP also encourages constructi(e citi2enship+ 3n (iew o- its success in ma&ing science appealing to pupils and its adoption by more than -i-ty countries# /.AM.4 )3,.P in /cience in collaboration with 3nternational /cience# ,echnology 5 3nno(ation %entre (3/,3%) and the La Main la Pte Foundation organi2ed a wor&shop -or science teacher trainers# curriculum de(elopers# science super(isors and national trainers and6or decision-ma&ers -rom de(eloping countries+ ,he hope is that those who participate could -orm group o- trainers -or disseminating the inquiry- based science teaching and learning and also e0periences in their respecti(e countries.

Objective
At the end o- the wor&shop# participants should be able to7 - recognise the philosophy and ten principles o- LAMAP8 - e0perience the process o- inquiry- based science teaching and learning through (arious LAMAP lesson e0emplars8 - de(elop an action plan -or disseminating and sharing o- e0periences on LAMAP with colleagues and teachers in their respecti(e home countries8 and - de-ine the roles o- trainers and resource persons in operationalising LAMAP in home countries+
