Lesson April 18, 2013

Grade/Subject: __Math 7___

SPECIFIC OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES 4. Identify and plot points in the four quadrants of a Cartesian plane, using integral ordered pairs. [C, CN, V] 5. Perform and describe transformations (translations, rotations or reflections) of a 2-D shape in all four quadrants of a Cartesian plane (limited to integral number vertices). [C, CN, PS, T, V] [ICT: C63.4]

Unit: _ 2D Geometry

Lesson Duration: _50 minutes__ ASSESSMENTS

(Observations, Key Questions, Products/Performances)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
(2-3, clear, and measurable)

Students will:
Explanation of terms: translation, congruent, ordered pairs, x-axis, y-axis, and reflection. Introduce term line of reflection Use a mirror to explain the definition of reflection, and congruent shapes. Show reflection of 2D objects on the floor grid. Compare how ordered pairs change when you reflect an object. Practice the concepts they have learned with an assignment. *Questions, observations, and assessments are listed in each learning activity in the description of body.

PROCEDURE
Introduction (_5_min.): Attention Grabber: Silent Ball Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Review concepts we have discussed so far in this unit. Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students will be respectful of others in the classroom while they are talking, Cell phones are put away not being used, if students have a question they will raise their hand, no talking while someone else is talking, and students should be engaged in class discussion. Students cannot talk and will complete this exam on their own. Advance Organizer/Agenda: Silent Ball, Mirror, Floor Grid, Practice, Silent Ball Transition to Body: Silent Ball

Body (_40_min.): Learning Activity #1: Silent Ball 1) We will do a quick review from the previous days this week. 2) Ask students to define terms: translation, congruent, ordered pairs, x-axis, y-axis, and reflection. 3) Review how to plot points and how to translate points. 4) Quickly translate students to the mirror. Learning Activity #2: Mirror 1) Have some shapes cut out. 2) Ask students to look in the mirror. 3) Do they seem the same distance away from the mirror than they actually are? 4) Now tell students to line up behind the mirror. 5) Give person at the front a shape. 6) Ask them if they move the shape close or far if the shape stays the same distance away? 7) Let each student do this so they all have a chance to see the reflection. 8) When they are done they can go and sit at the grid carpet. Learning Activity #3: Floor Grid 1) Have all students siting around the grid. 2) Students must be able to see. 3) Explain that the mirror is called the line of reflection. 4) When we have an object on one side of the line of reflection the object will be equal distance away on the other side of the line of reflection. 5) Do some examples as a class. 6) Put down premade shape. (Two of each kind) (Congruent) 7) Lay a large ruler down as a line of reflection. 8) Ask students what they think the reflection look like? 9) Explain flipping a page of a book. 10) Have students place a shape on the grid and then another student choose the LOR. 11) Do the reflection as a class. 12) Have students write coordinates of a shape on the white board. 13) If we do a reflection remind the students that only one set of coordinates change. 14) Ask the students to predict coordinate reflections. Learning Activity #4: Practice Activity Mirrors 1) Students have an assignment in their containers. 2) Tell students to go and get their assignment and sit in their desk. 3) Must be in the first 3 rows! 4) After everyone has his or her assignment take one mirror out. 5) Do some examples as a class. 6) Put mirror on the LOR. 7) Look at one side and see the reflection plot points. 8) Look at other side see reflection and plot points. 9) Shapes should be congruent and equal distance from the LOR *unless LOR is in middle of shape. 10) Color new shape with a pencil crayon. Sponge* Students can continue to work on their large puzzle Closure ( 5_min.) Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Silent ball review the content learned today in class. Transition To Next Lesson: Rotation - transformations
