SPECIFICATION FOR GABIONS, GEO TEXTILE AND RENO MATRESS Gabions

Description This work shall consist of the construction of protection walls and mattresses to embankment slopes, canal banks and canal beds, using rock filled wire mesh baskets known as gabions. Materials Materials used shall meet the requirements of the following unless otherwise specified. a). Gabions shall be PVC coated gal anised steel wire wo en into a not more than !"#$"" mm %&'(G)*(+ mesh and strength should be not less than ,- .*/m or equi alent. Gabions longer than $.0 m shall ha e partition panels at $.1 m centers. b).2roken rock for filling baskets shall be of si3es ar4ing from about $11 mm in minimum dimension to "11 mm in ma#imum dimension and the4 shall be hard and durable, free from weathered pieces and e#traneous matter. The rock shall be reasonabl4 well graded between the two limiting si3es. Construction Re uire!ents The canal banks against which gabions are to be placed shall be suitable trimmed and the ground shall be le elled and compacted as required b4 the &ngineer. The baskets for the gabions shall be constructed to regular bo# shapes with rectangular sides of dimensions as shown on the drawings and assembled and erected strictl4 in accordance with the manufacturer5s instructions. The baskets shall be constructed out of ".- mm or more dia. wire to 26 $10"/$7!1 ha ing a tensile strength not less than 8!1 */mm" and not e#ceeding 011 */mm" or equi alent and shall be hea il4 9at least "-0 gm/sq.m) hot dip gal anised to 2.6. ,,8 /$7!" or equi alent. The wire shall be coated with 1.0 mm thick u stabili3ed PVC which shall be e#truded onto the wire to limit air moisture, contaminants, and the lime coming in contract with the steel in the e ent the PVC is penetrated b4 damage. (fter coating the wire shall be wo en with one and a half twists and edges shall be reinforced with hea ier coated wire not less than 8., mm dia. core diameter, ,., mm o erall diameter 96el edge wire). (ssembl4 shall be securel4 tied with PVC coated tie wire "."/8." mm 0: of Gabion weight of the same specification as the mesh wire. (ll tolerances limits to be as per specified in 26 $10"/$7!1. The product should be ;6) 711" certified or equi alent. The tender should submit a certificate from a recogni3ed independent testing authorit4 confirming the offered gabions possesses the abo e alues. The report should separatel4 show the alues of each and e er4 detail stated abo e. The filling of baskets shall be carried out in<situ, unless otherwise directed. This requires that the empt4 baskets, open at the top, be positioned on the base or on top of the gabions and in filled with the rock pieces in such a manner as to completel4 fill up the baskets lea ing onl4 the minimum of oids prior to closing and securel4 t4ing the lid using wire of appro ed gauge. ;n building the walls the gabions shall be placed with scattered =oints and the4 shall be tied together using strands of wire. ;n the e ent of this not being as the manufacturer5s requirements, the manufacturer5s requirements shall appl4. The space =ust behind the gabion walls shall be protected b4 a geote#tile filter in accordance with gi en below. (ll work to be done in accordance with the drawings and directions of the &ngineer.

Backfill behind Gabions

(fter placing the geote#tile filter, the backfilling behind gabions shall be carried out with appro ed sand4<gra el material in accordance with sub<6ection 8.0. Measure!ent an" Pa#!ent 9a) Measurement i) ii) iii) i ) V) 9b) The gabion walls shall be measured in cubic metres, completed and accepted. The backfill material shall be measured. (s per 6ection 8.0." Geote#tile filter material shall be measured in square metres of material laid in place and accepted. The stone packing below foundation of gabion shall be measured in cubic metres as placed in position. (n4 e#ca ation required, not included in canal e#ca ation shall be measured in cubic metres.

Pa4ment The quantities determined for gabion walls, geote#tile filter material, and backfill material as pro ided abo e , shall be paid separatel4 for at the contract unit rates in the 2ill of >uantities and shall be full compensation for all labour, materials, tools and incidentals necessar4 for completion of the work including cutting and shaping the slopes and beds on which the walls are built. (n4 e#ca ation required and rubble packing for the base shall be paid separatel4 at the Contract unit rate for the items as per the bill of quantities.

Geotextile Filter Material

9a) General The le el of the water table under construction such as roads, retaining walls, embankment etc. has to be limited to protect their stabilit4. ?rainage water will filter through the geote#tile filter in to the gabion bo# and finall4 escape in to the canal. 9b) Materials 9i). The geote#tile filter cloth shall be of appro ed filter fabric composed of pol4ester, pol4prop4lene, pol4eth4lene, pol4amide non wo en t4pe or a combination of the abo e.

The Geote#tile should be resistant to ultra iolet degradation and to biological and chemical en ironment normall4 found in soil. @urther the offer Geote#tile should conform to the propert4 alues listed below. Reno Mattress
The Eeno mattress is a gabion where the depth is small in proportion to its length and width. ;t is di ided in to se eral cells b4 trans erse diaphragms and is fabricated from wo en he#agonal steel wire netting. The netting used shall ha e the same specifications as for the gabions. The base, sides and ends are formed from one single panel of netting on which the diaphragms are fi#ed at $ m centres. +id is supplied as a separate panel of mesh. T4pical unit would be D m ' " m ' 811 mm di ided in to D cells. Measure!ent an" Pa#!ent 9a) Measurement 9i) 9ii) 9b) The geote#tile filter material for placing Eeno mattress shall be measured in square metres of material. The Eeno mattress of thickness 811 mm shall be measured on the area of the mattress laid in square metres.

Pa4ment Pa4ments for abo e items will be based on the contract unit rate for the items and shall include full compensation for all materials, labour, tools, equipment and preparation of surface for placing Eeno mattress and an4 other incidentals necessar4 to complete the work to the specifications.
