Exploration of the Need and Evaluation

Why are you making the item of jewellery? I making this piece of jewellery for young girls aged 12-15, to be a casual yet dressy accessory to wear when they go out. With the resources given this necklace will be beaded. Who is it for? Age: 12-14 Gender: Females Personality: Girls who are laid back and casual like the girl next door. Item of Jewellery: Casual Necklace Polymer clay beads Round Strong/durable Red and white To find out more about the intended audience for this piece of jewellery I have decided to conduct a survey to find out more about the needs of my audience. 1. How old are you? 2. How often do you wear jewellery? 3. Does the jewellery that you wear have a purpose other than to look good? E.g. cross is religious 4. Have you ever made jewellery? 5. What forms of jewellery do you wear? 6. Do you like beaded jewellery? 7. Does the jewellery you wear fit a theme? 8. Do you like your jewellery to be? In response 17 girls completed my survey, the results are listed below.

Conclusion: From the research taken in the survey, I have discovered that: The most popular age was 14. Though very close, most girls have no experience making any jewellery The majority of girls said that they only wear jewellery sometimes I would like to make a beaded piece of jewellery and I was happy to see that the majority of girls like beaded jewellery For the question what do you like your jewellery to be the top two answers were silver and gold The two most popular choices of jewellery were necklaces and earrings Girls said that wear casual and girly pieces of jewellery opposed to emo styled More girls said that their jewellery is not for a religious purpose

To gain inspiration for my final design I have created the collage below, which features 20 different images of beaded necklaces. I chose these images because they are aesthetically appealing.

Below I have copied two images found in the collage above, and have labelled the different features. The first image I have inserted, I chose because it is aesthetically pleasing. The design is simple it is also fun and creative. At a first glance this piece of jewellery looks simple, however if I chose to make a similar piece of jewellery it will prove to be a challenge

Each bead is different; however you will notice that the design is repeated.

Red and white beads used

This necklace is featured on a silver chain. This makes the item of jewellery looks more classy. The next item of jewellery I have inserted, I chose because it is simple, neat, and creative. I believe it would be fun and easy to make.

This piece of jewellery is to be hung around the neck by a piece of string.

Polymer clay has been rolled into balls then flattened; a hole was made in the middle to fit on the string.

From the research I have done, I have decided to use the following ideas in my designs for a piece of jewellery: I would like to display features of my piece of jewellery in a colour pattern, for example I would like to make a beaded necklace which has coloured polymer clay beads in a pattern. I would like to make a necklace Red and white polymer clay, are the colours I want to use I would like to make beads

Generation and evaluation of 2 ideas with annotations

The first design I have drawn, is very simple yet elegant. It features a red rose which will be made out of polymer clay and is to be hung on a black cord.

The second design I have drawn is simple and causal. It features green and blue long polymer clay beads which give it a calm beach feel.

My final design is simple yet fun. It was inspired by an existing design and features polka dot beads in a pattern.

I have chosen to produce this design because it fits my need, and the research I have done has gone towards generating this design. I believe it will be a fun task to make and will prove to have some challenges. For my final design to be produced I will need the following materials:

Red polymer clay for the beads White polymer clay for the beads A skewer to make the holes for the beads to be strung A black cord necklace An oven to harden the beads The liquid to make the beads [once hardened] shiny

Section 1 Design process
1. Read Evaluating success. List the financial and personal rewards that Dinosaur Designs' partners can enjoy because of their company's success. There are many personal rewards that come with being a Dinosaur Designer, such as enjoy making products that are going to be of value of others, working on projects, designers get to make new friends and enjoy coming to work. Financial rewards include owning their own business. 2. Look at the Dinosaur Designs' career path. What things indicate the company's success and popularity? One of the Dinosaur Designers, Stephen talks about how young adults would save up their money so they could come in and purchase a piece of jewellery, this indicates that their products are popular and this would lead to success because that customer would go out and tell people about their piece of jewellery. Another reason that shows the companys success and popularity is that, each piece is original and will mean something to the wearer. Stephen also talks about how they are asked to do pieces for charity auctions and that their piece is also a big hit, indicated their popularity. 3. Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs.

The Design Process

1. Observation and Critical Analysis: The Dinosaurs, viewed what they had to do for the project and then researched into what they could use.

2. Research and Investigation: The Dinosaurs looked into different materials, techniques and tools that they could use.

3. Idea Generation: When designing a product, it is a team eort and they look at what needs to be included in the final product. Dinosaur Designers also need to look at any constraints or limitations. 4. Final Design Designers chose a final design that fits the Design Brief the best. 5. Production: During this step designers make their product. For example if they are making a resin design 6. Evaluation Designers look back and view what they have done and if their final product matches the brief.

4. Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? Section 2 Factors influencing design

1. Visit the Gallery of work. Touch, feel and look are important to Dinosaur Designs. Look at three images and describe them in terms of the elements of design, such as line, colour and texture. Image Description Dinosaur Designs created chess set pieces for Louis Vuitton. At a first glance the pieces are very bold and striking yet so simple. The black pieces look smooth and glossy and the white side look a bit more dry however still smooth. Though the pieces are not shaped how they normally would, you can tell my where they are positioned and their size, for example the King is always the largest piece followed by the Queen. The colours are the same as a traditional chess set. Dinosaur Designs have made this extremely beautiful glass collection. The pieces are very slender, smooth, shiny and mostly tall. The taller ones look like they could be used as a vase and the smaller ones look like they are for a candle. The colours range from white, oranges, reds, yellows and greens.

This Dinosaur Design piece is very simple yet gorgeous. I believe it is long earrings with resin inlay. The resin which is contained by the metal structure, is a dark red, however it appears to be lighter and more translucent in the middle. The piece looks very smooth and thin.

2. Dinosaur Designs manufactures all their resin pieces in their own studio. What kinds of Occupational Health & Safety practices might they have to consider for employees working in a studio or workshop environment? www.workcover.com.au For workers who are dealing with resin, it is very important that they understand the risks that working with resin has. Getting even small amounts in your eye, will impact hugely on your vision and you may lose sight completely. When working with resin employees need to always wear googles or glasses, gloves to protect your skin and in some cases it may be good to wear a mask so employees dont need to breathe it in. The duty of the employers is to provide their workers with protection.

Section 3 Roles of designers

1. The Dinosaur Designs team received training in the visual arts as well as professional art studies. Suggest an alternative career path that might give you the skills necessary for designing objects and/or jewellery. You might like to visit http://www.myfuture.edu.au . An alternative career path that will provide you with the skills of designing objects such as jewellery would be a sculptor. Though sculptors mostly work with clay, they would be able to use other sources to. Sculptors learn the skills of creating and designing, and work with their hands. 2. Jewellery design is a design specialisation of the area of study: Products. What other design specialisations does Dinosaur Designs work in? Dinosaur Designs also work to create products other than jewellery; they also create a range of glass products, fabrics and worked with Louis Vuitton to create a chess set. 3. List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you. There are many reasons why people wear jewellery, for example some are:

Out of habitat The piece of jewellery may be important to them or to a family member or to their culture To show wealth To show that they belong to something e.g. a religion or group

My favourite piece of jewellery would be the ring that was given to me by my mum when I was 8 years old; it features two gold hearts which I view as my mums heart and my heart together. I wear this ring every day because it is

important to me because; it represents the love my mum has for me and the love and respect I have for her. It also means that my mum is always with me. 4. Identify the contribution Dinosaur Designs makes to the improvement of everyday life. In a way Dinosaur Designs make life for their customers more fun. Those who wear their pieces may have a special bond with item, as it may mean something or was given to them by someone special. Dinosaur Designs also make a range of glass products, those who have them get to experience the beauty of them every day.

Section 4 Generating ideas

1. Stephen Ormandy of Dinosaur Designs describes the importance of sketching for generating ideas. Practice your sketching skills for your next project. Keep a small pocket notebook and pencil with you at all times and draw thumbnails of any ideas you come across. 2. Identify some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate creative ideas. About the designer Dinosaur Designs started working at markets, and there they learnt that people were interested in jewellery and what type of jewellery They design pieces to suit their market They look at different people and what would suit them

Section 5 Selects, analyses, presents and applies research

1. Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out. At Paddington Markets, the designers would sell clothes and different pieces of jewellery. They sold different pieces, to find out what people liked and created more pieces from their answers. 2. Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? For designers to find out what is in, they should refer to sources of information such as; blogs, magazines, Pinterest boards and social media apps such as Tumblr. Using these sources they would find out what is a popular trend at the current time and could create pieces to match it.

Section 6 Mixed material technologies

1. If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object. If I designed a small pendant and wanted to make mass copies to start my own line or business, there are a few methods to get it mass produced. Designing the pendant with exact measurements would be a good way to start, then making a prototype to make sure thats how you want it to look. Researching manufactures that can produce your design is a good place to start, then asking them to make a sample so you can ensure you are happy with it. 2. For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? If the designer decided to go ahead and mass produce the item, it may affect the visual appeal of the object, for example colour may fade during the process. Mass producing an item may impact on the quality. 3. Research other products made from polyester resin, e.g. bathroom vanities, bathtubs, canoes, surfboards. Compare the characteristics of these products with the characteristics of Dinosaur Designs' products. Dinosaur Designers have worked with chemists who have helped them develop a specific type of resin, which has the characteristic of being stronger and can deal with impact. Another product that is made with polyester resin are surfboards, it is used on surfboards because it will make the board last longer and works better in the water. A characteristic of polyester resin on a canoe is that it serves the purpose of glue. In a way polyester resin has similar characteristics when it works with different products.
