You have just bought your first house, a real fixer-upper which the previous owners neglected. You are looking around at the mess they left behind when they moved out- especially in the garage- when you discover that you have gotten your hands extremely dirty while you were exploring. You would like to wash your hands, but the water has not been turned on in the house yet. You discover a series of gallon jugs with various liquids in them, but none of them are labeled, and you dont know whats in them. Could they be toxic chemicals? Plant fertilizer? Gasoline? Your job is to figure out if any of these liquids is water, based on the properties of that substance, so that you can wash your hands. Part 1. Physical Properties of Water 1. Is water clear? ___________________ 2. Does water have a color? __________________ a. If so, what is it? _________________ 3. Does water have a smell? _________________ a. If so, what is it? ______________________ 4. Does water have a taste? ____________________ a. If so, what is it? _____________________ 5. Does water have dissolved gases in it (forms bubbles)? _______________ 6. Does water form drops? _________________ 7. Does water dissolve solids? ________________ 8. What is the density of water? _________________ Part 2. In this part of the lab, you will test each of the liquids to see if its properties match the properties of water. In each case, if the liquid fails to match the properties of water, you will eliminate that liquid from consideration by explaining why it cannot be water write your answer in the Elimination box at the bottom of each column. Clear Look at each liquid in the test tubes to see if the liquid is clear (meaning you can see though it.) Is the liquid clear? Write your answer in the data table.

Color Look at each test tube to see if the liquid has a color. Does the liquid have a color? Write your answer in the data table. Smell Wave your hand across the mouth of each test tube to see if there is an odor present (this is called wafting.) Does the liquid have an odor? Write your answer in the data table. Taste We will not be testing this property of the liquids. Dissolved Gases Look at the liquid in each test tube. If there are a lot of small bubbles present in the liquid, this means there are dissolved gases in the liquid. Does your liquid have dissolved gases? Write your answer in the data table. Drops Water has surface tension, which means the particles at the surface of the liquid pull together to make a skin. The surface tension causes the particles to pull tightly and form drops. Some liquids do not have a strong surface tension like water and will not form drops. Drop a sample of each liquid in the test tubes onto a sheet of waxed paper. Does the liquid form a drop? Write your answer in the data table. Dissolved Solids Water is able to dissolve all three states of matter - solids, liquids, and gases. To see if the liquids are able to dissolve solids, sprinkle a few grains of salt into each drop on your waxed paper. Does the water dissolve the solid? Write your answer in the data table. pH All substances are either acids, bases or neutral. Water is the only neutral substance. Test each liquid in the test tubes with both red and blue litmus paper. If the substance is a base, red litmus paper will turn blue. If the substance is an acid, blue litmus paper will turn red. What is the pH of your liquid? Write your answer in the data table. At this point, you should go through each liquid and eliminate the ones that cannot be water. You should only have one or two liquids left. Use only the remaining liquids to do the final test. Density All substances have their own individual densities. No other liquid has the same density as water, so by testing the density of each substance, you should be able to determine which substance is water.

1. Take the mass of an empty graduated cylinder. ________________ 2. Pour 5 ml of your liquid into the graduated cylinder. 3. Take the new mass of the cylinder and liquid. _________________ 4. Subtract the two masses. ___________________ 5. Divide #4 by 5. _______________________ Write the density for each liquid you tested in the data table.

Identify which liquid you think is water by circling the liquid number at the top of the column.
