PIRATE PUNCTUATION

TEACHER KEY

Directions: Use the word bank to fill in the blanks.

Ahoy mates! Welcome aboard our ship, The Playful Parakeet, where we are punctuation professionals! Ending punctuation is very important. It tells us where the sentence stops. Ending punctuation also tells us what tone we should use in our voice. Without punctuation, we wouldnt know if we were making a statement, asking a question, or shouting! To end a plain sentence that just states the facts, we will use a period. These are sentences like, I am scrubbing the deck. or Put up the sails. If I need to ask the crew to do a job, I will ask a question. A question always needs a question mark at the end. Sometimes, I will ask questions like, Will you get the mop? or Can you see land? Then, there are other times that I have to say something loud or with expression. I always use an exclamation point at the end of those sentences! I would use an exclamation point at the end of sentences like, Hurry! A storm is coming! or Land ho! As you can see, pirates use ending punctuation all the time to say what we mean, and you should too!
