Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template

Grade Level/Subject: 3rd grade/ Reading Central Focus: Cause and Effect

Essential Standard/Common Core Objective: RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, Date submitted: Date taught: or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence and cause/effect. Daily Lesson Objective: Students will be able to recognize the relationship between cause and effect. They will also be able to relate their knowledge of cause and effect relationships to events in a small piece of text. 21st Century Skills: Academic Language Demand (Language Function and Vocabulary): cause, effect, because, as a result of, why.

Prior Knowledge: According to RI.K.3, RI.1.3, and RI.2.3 students should be able to with prompting and support describe a connection between individuals, events, ideas or pieces of a text. They should also be able to describe the connection between a series of historical events, ideas or concepts or steps in a technical procedure in a text. Activity 1. 7. Closure

You have studied in the past that there are relationships between individuals, events or ideas. Today we are going to learn about one of those relationships 3 min between pieces of a text. Today we are going to learn about the relationship between cause and effect. I am hungry this morning because I did not eat breakfast. I have not had my coffee this morning. As a result I am sleepy. I did not do my homework, therefore I have no recess. All of these sentences have something in 4 min common. By the end of this lesson you will not only be able to tell what it is they have in common but also you will be able to label each part in the sentence. The cause of an event is the why. Why did a certain event happen? What happens as the result of the why or the cause is the effect. Every action has a reaction whether it is good or bad. The action is the cause and the reaction is the effect. Good readers look for cause and effect key words when reading so 6 min that they can better understand what they are reading. If I know the cause and the effect of the event, or action of an individual I am reading about then I as a reader can answer questions that I have as I read. Key words that I can look for when I am reading are: because, as a result of, why, if, if so, and reason. We are going to take a look back at the sentences I first read you and we are going to highlight in one color the cause and then in another color we are going to highlight the effect. What should I look for first to help me distinguish between the cause and the effect? What is a cause again? What is 6-7 min an effect? Who wants to help me with the first one? I am looking for the cause of the first sentence. Go through a couple of sentences with them so that they get the hang of finding the cause and effect in a sentence. Complete the questions that are attached below dealing with cause and effect. These questions have them identify the cause from a sentence, and then an 5-10 min effect from another sentence. This way if they truly do not understand cause and effect then I will be able to see that reflected in their answer choices. My assessment will be made based off of their independent practice questions. If they get 4 out of 5 correct then I will know that they have mastered the objective. If they do not get 4 out of 5 correct then I know that they need some more individual or small group work to fully grasp cause and effect. Today we learned that every action has a reaction and that is known as the cause and the effect. The cause is the why and the effect is what happens as 2 min a result of the why. The relationship of the cause and the effect can be

identified by the key words like: because, as a result of, why, if, if so and reason. 8. Assessment Results of all objectives/skills: Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations: Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations: I would have my advanced students and my early finishers write two cause and effect sentences of their own below their questions and I will be looking to see if they used one of the key words in each sentence.

Reflection:

What evidence do you have that students mastered or did not master the lesson objective? Based on your

evaluation of their work, how many students mastered the lesson objective? For evidence that they mastered this lesson on cause and effect, I have their questions that they answered. I was not able to keep them but I did get to look at them to see how the students did. I had 23 students in total and all of them were present. After reviewing them I found that 16 out of the 23 showed mastery with the questions where they had to pick out the cause or the effect in a sentence.
What did your students learn as a result of your teaching? Was that your intention?

My students learned how to identify the cause or the effect in a sentence using key words that they can look for like: because, as a result of, why, if, if so, and reason. My intention was to give them a good enough understanding of what cause and effect is and then to give them practice to help identify the cause and the effect in a sentence. I told them that the why was the cause, and that the effect is what happens as a result of the why. And I gave examples of every action has a reaction. Like if one of the students pushed another one down then they would get into trouble because we are not supposed to touch someone else or be mean to them.
Name at least 1 aspect of the lesson that was successful. What caused it to be successful? How did you contribute to

this success? One aspect that was successful was giving them real life examples with cause and effect. I feel like they could understand it just by me explaining it to them but I feel like if they can relate to the cause and effect situation then they will know what cause and effect are and be able to use their knowledge in the future like on their Read to Achieve tests. I added this piece into my lesson so that they would be able to relate to it and understand it more clearly..
Name at least 1 aspect of the lesson that was less successful. What caused it to be less successful? How did you

contribute to this? I could tell that the why and the something that happens because of the why was kind of confusing to them. I kept getting my tongue twisted just when trying to explain it to them so I think that this had something to do with it. I also do not really think that this was the best way to explain it. I think that since I had to keep thinking about how to say it and it was a little confusing how I presented it than that made it unsuccessful. This is also another reason why I added the real life examples.

What changes might make this lesson more successful? Why might these changes help improve the activity?

I think that a way I could have helped this lesson be more successful is that I could have explained what cause and effect were in a more effective way than I did and that might have reached those seven students who did not master this activity. If I confused them during my explanation then they might have just tuned me out or tried their best but it was just too hard. I noticed on two of their papers that they had cause and effect flipped and I could have spent more time on defining them in general and really making sure that they knew the difference between cause and the effect.
