Lisa Aremband December 2013 Self Managers Introduction: Teacher introduces the idea in a discussion with students, and goes through the form with them. Students spend time each day that week thinking about one of the expected behaviors and what it entails. Students can write in their journals, discuss with a partner, or both. Then students should share what they generated and the teacher should create a master list to be referred to for what each behavior means. Teachers may want to start this process by focusing on a class-wide goal each week to practice goal-setting and performance evaluation. This can be done before or during the self-manager introduction.

Folders: Each student should have at least 20 pages in a folder labeled Self Managers. The childs folder should have his or her name on it, be stored in his or her desk, and be kept private.

Process: Meet with each student at the beginning of the week to generate a goal for the week. The student should write the goal in the space provided on that weeks self manager. Teachers should have more control over the choosing of goals at the beginning, and then as students grow more adept at reflecting upon their own behavior and setting goals, students should take the lead in the goal-determining process. At the end of each day, students should be given 3-5 minutes to fill out the column for that day, rating their performance from 1-6. The teacher should meet with some students each day to ensure that they are rating themselves accurately. At the end of the week, students will take the whole folder home and have their parents sign that weeks self manager form. At the beginning of the next week, they will start to fill out the next sheet, either setting a new goal or continuing with the old one, as the teacher and student decide during conference.
