RELAZZO - THE DECKING SYSTEM

1 General information positive properties of polypropylene and wood. With excellent mechanical characteristic values, the prole also retains a natural feel and look. Additional surface brushing of the RELAZZO proles creates a roughened nish, further enhancing the natural look of the product. Advantages over solid wood decking include reduced cleaning and maintenance, greater durability and improved dimensional stability. The RELAZZO decking boards are reversible, offering a choice between two different proled surfaces (ribbed or grooved). The individual decking boards are secured using stainless steel (V4A) brackets, designed in house, ensuring simple assembly and adequate structural stability, as well as allowing for the disassembly and reassembly of individual boards at a later date. The RELAZZO decking system has the Qualittsgemeinschaft Holzwerkstoffe e.V. quality seal of the VHI (Association of the German Woodworking Industry) and bears the TV octagon of the TV-SD (certied in accordance with TV guidelines). This quality seal sets out uniform quality criteria for decking proles and is given to products which full the highest of qualitative requirements. The TV certicate stands for stringent, international tests and limit values. The properties of RELAZZO are subject to regular testing by an independent, external institute. 2.2 Dimensions and permitted deviations All dimensions and tolerances are set out on the latest version of the REHAU drawing. For dimensions without any special tolerance specications the following general tolerances apply in accordance with DIN 2768 dated. Dim. 1.1 Applicability This Technical Information applies for the REHAU RELAZZO decking system, consisting of boards, substructure and system components. Information about assembly can be found in the installation instructions for the RELAZZO decking system. 1.2 Area of application

The RELAZZO decking boards, the substructure as well as all of the system components were specially developed for use as decking. The products do not have building authority approval and for this reason are not be used for self-supporting, structural purposes or vertically as wall cladding or fencing. The local building regulations are to be observed accordingly. In the case of installation on balconies or bridgework for example, it is important to provide a structurally sound foundation and, where necessary, to use a steel substructure with a small bearing distance between supports. 1.3 Ecology/economic efficiency The RELAZZO decking system is PEFC-certied and therefore underlines REHAUs sense of responsibility to the environment. In terms of sustained environmental ecology, the RELAZZO decking boards are completely recyclable. Due to the wood content of over 50 %, the RELAZZO decking boards and substructure fall into waste wood ordinance Class AIV and are classed as biomass. The local disposal regulations are to be observed accordingly. Thanks to the considerably greater durability and virtually no need for additional treatments, RELAZZO decking proles are substantially more economically efficient in the long term than conventional wooden coverings. The RELAZZO decking system meets DIN CEN/TS 1508301 Durability of wood and wood-based products - Determination of the natural durability of solid wood against wood-destroying fungi of the highest durability class 1 (very durable).

Product information

2.1 Product description The RELAZZO decking boards (and substructure) are made of high quality polypropylene and at least 50% wood bres from sustainable, European forestry. This material combination of wood and polymer is known as wood-polymer composite, or WPC for short. The WPC material developed by REHAU, RAU-WOOD, ideally combines the

2.3 Surface nish and colour To increase the anti-slip properties of the surface, the RELAZZO decking boards are roughened using a special brushing process. Unlike solid wood or unbrushed decking boards, WPC boards achieve an anti-slip classication of R11 (approval for public areas). Above all, this process minimises the risk of an accident on wet proles. It is however to be borne in mind that the anti-slip properties are reduced in wet or icy conditions. The special surface nish also enhances the wood characteristic of the proles. Brushing is carried out uniformly in one direction, raising the wood particles evenly. In order to avoid an irregular look, you should ensure that all boards are laid in the direction of brushing. The direction of brushing is indicated by the marking or arrow on the side. On the opposite side in the hollow chamber or, in a solid prole, on the outside you will nd two ridges (see pictures). However, you can also use the brushing to purposely achieve desired visual effects.

2.4 Colour development The RELAZZO decking baord colours are UV-resistant. The colour characteristics are therefore retained even in the case of intensive weathering. However, wood is a natural product and is subject to colour variations. In the rst few weeks there is a reaction of the substance contained in wood, lignin, with the UV part of light. This causes a yellowing of the wood bres in the surface layers of the decking boards. This effect may be visible prior to installation under certain circumstances. However, discolouration that occurs in this way is washed out again by the effect of water (e.g. rain) within the rst few months. Discolouration resulting from the movement of objects (for example ower pots) also goes through the natural greying process. You can accelerate this natural process by spraying the surface with water within the rst 8 to 10 weeks after installation (e.g. with a high pressure cleaner, see 3.2 Care tips, Basic cleaning). The wood bres then proceed through the natural process of greying. Subsequent removal of the greyed bres by means of high pressure cleaning with a high nozzle pressure or by sanding the surface only leads to a brief lightening of the wood particles. The process of yellowing and greying then starts all over again. The basic colour of the decking, which is derived from the pigmented polymer component, is nevertheless retained in the long term and reects the products colour character at any given time. However, the discolouration described does not impair the mechanical properties of the RELAZZO decking system in any way and therefore does not represent a defect. The raw material wood also means possible colour variations and shadowing that enhance the natural wood appearance. When using different batches, it is recommended that you mix up the batches, so that this effect is used to its full potential. Due to the colour variations described, samples provided can only be used as a guide for colour selection. The individual batches are subject to the natural colour variations of wood. Terra Original colour immediately after installation. Yellowing depending on sunlight after one day to 2 months. Lightening and greying depending on the weather conditions after 2 to 5 months.
Figure: Examples of discolouration of the wood particles caused by weathering.

Ciottolo

The RELAZZO decking boards are available in the following colours: Colour Decking board: Terra Dark brown Ciottolo Grey Ametista Red brown Grano Light brown Ambra Mid brown Sasso Blue grey Substructure: Black Black

The brackets and screws are made from stainless steel V4A and the existing test results conrm that the RELAZZO decking system is suitable for use around the pool (in chlorinated air) and on the coast (in salty air). 2.7 Physical properties Certain materials rubbing against each other (e.g. rubber sole on plastic ooring, this includes WPC decking boards among others) can cause an electrostatic charge under certain circumstances (e.g. low air humidity and dry prole) and cause sparks from static electric discharge. In order to avoid or discharge the static charge, the earthing of the oor covering, the use of conductive and earthed joint proles, antistatic mats or appropriate shoes and the shielding of electronic components are recommended. National standards, specications, legislation, operating instructions (e.g. electronic devices) or similar are to be observed. 2.8 Accident Prevention In order to rule out any risk of physical injury, the following advice must be observed and followed. In the case of point loads that exceed 300 kg, the substructure should be laid closer than specied (depending on the laying direction). The products do not have building authority approval and for this reason are not to be used for self-supporting, structural purposes. The local building regulations are to be observed accordingly (see 1.2 Area of application). The substructure must be sufficiently load-bearing for the load. In the case of wet, icy or other slippery conditions, beware of the reduced slip resistance. Due to the grooved effect on the boards, as well as the installation joints, there is an increased risk of tripping when wearing shoes with thin, pointed heels. This risk can be minimised through various joint solutions. Lighting installation: The installation and tting of lighting elements (LED spots, etc.), tting electrical auxiliary devices, the connection and commissioning of the whole system for low voltage is to be carried out by a certied electrician. 2.9 Fire behaviour The re behaviour of the RELAZZO decking boards was tested to the testing process DIN EN ISO 11925-2 and classied as follows according to DIN EN 13501-1:2007: Class E (construction products with normal ame-resistance) Use for escape routes is therefore not permitted.

Figure: The desired colour effect is maintained even after several years.

The colours are represented as realistically as possible. Deviations from the original may occur. The RELAZZO decking system was specially developed for outdoor use. As it contains natural wood bres, the colour of the boards will change under the effects of UV rays. For (partly) covered decking, there may therefore be colour variations over time. In order to avoid this, the covered area should be regularly sprayed with water until the colour has stabilised in the ageing process. To do this, the decking boards can be sprayed with water or treated in the direction of the ridges with a high pressure cleaner. 2.5 Thermal properties The material RAU-WOOD was developed in order to ensure high dimensional stability and prole strength even in strong sunlight. However, long-term exposure to direct sunlight at temperatures of over 70 C on the surface of the decking boards is to be avoided in order to prevent damage to the surface, as well as mechanical stress. At permanent high ambient temperatures, the substructure spacing is also to be reduced by 10 cm depending on the installation method used. WPC products warm up under the effect of heat just like any other building material. Dark shades warm up more than light shades. It is important to remember this when walking barefoot on the decking. As a natural material, wood reacts to the inuences of weather (temperature and humidity). In order to retain the long life, sufficient air circulation is to be ensured. The inuence of heat and moisture occurring simultaneously accelerates the decomposition of the wood structures and therefore inuences the mechanical properties, as well as reducing the life of the RELAZZO decking boards. These are therefore not suitable for use in the tropics and similar areas. 2.6 Chemical Properties The REHAU WPC products do not contain any heavy metals or any other components which are harmful to the environment. The material RAU-WOOD demonstrates a high resistance to external environmental inuences. Exposure to oxidisation agents, such as industrial bleaches and strong acids as well as organic solvents (e.g. ethanol, acetone, xylene, hydrocarbons, etc.) is however to be avoided. Please therefore take care when using fuel, grill lighter uids and sulphur compounds, as these can attack the material.

Practical information

3.1 Care/maintenance Due to the material properties, RELAZZO decking boards do not require any subsequent protective coating treatment (oil, varnish), as is necessary with solid wood products to protect the wood. There is also no need to treat the boards with wood protection substances for mould or discolouration.
5

3.2 Care Tips As a result of the fact that the wood bres are embedded separately and under high pressure as well as temperature in a polypropylene matrix, dirt cannot or nds it difficult to get deep into the prole. Dirt usually remains on the surface or is drawn in by brushing or rubbing the exposed wood bres. Polypropylene stands out in addition to its positive environmental properties (e.g. no release of hydrochloric acid and hydrocyanic acid during burning) due to high light fastness and chemical resistance (e.g. in comparison to PVC and ABS). Care and maintenance of the RELAZZO decking boards is the responsibility of the user.

Regular cleaning removes various deposits (dirt, bits of food,....) especially from the grooves. This prevents mould which would otherwise grow on the dirt deposits. It is fundamentally important to always deal with spills (particularly grease and oil) as quickly as possible to minimise the amount which seeps into the wood bres. In most cases, immediate treatment with hot soapy water is sufficient. If bleaching agents are used on stubborn dirt, the respective agent is to be tested rst on a hidden area of the decking to ensure that it wont remove the colour. The following cleaning measures are generally to be carried out for light to heavy dirt.

Table: Cleaning recommendation, summary. Cause Alle

Red wine Cola Coffee Cigarettes Sulphuric acid Caustic soda Paints Rust spots Mould

The cleaning performance is mainly determined by the following factors: --Frequency of cleaning --Quantity of cleaning agent --Temperature --Cleaning time --Mechanical processing --Sun/UV rays The cleaning agent manufacturers information is to be observed. Rinse well with water after cleaning. Basic cleaning (dirt): Weekly sweeping and washing down with warm water (not too hot) at least twice a year will generally keep the decking clean in the long term. If simply washing down with water is not sufficient, we recommend rinsing the decking with a high pressure cleaner (max. 60 C, 100 bar, at a minimum distance of 500 mm) and cleaning with detergent or a commercial WPC oor cleaner. Dirt milling is not recommended. Oxalic acid-based decking cleaners are to be used for stubborn spots. Animal excrement and urine can usually be treated and removed in
6

the same way as any other dirt with warm water, a high pressure cleaner and light detergent. Special cases: Pencil marks from the installation can easily be removed with a rubber eraser. Chalk marks, with the exception of white chalk, cannot be removed, but can be reduced with warm water and a bleaching agent. Paint is extremely difficult to remove but the best thing to use is white spirit. Dirt from the barbecue: Grease, charcoal or cigarette marks are some of the most difficult substances to remove. Whilst grease marks can generally be removed with special decking cleaners or fat solvents, charcoal or ash marks can only be removed by sanding down the decking (e.g. using sandpaper, metal brushes, wire wool). However, each time the decking is sanded, the original brushed look deteriorates. It is therefore to be ensured that any sanding is carried out in the direction of the original brushing. We strongly recommend placing a mat under the barbecue. Take care with relighters (see 2.6 Chemical properties).

Mould: Warm water with detergent or chlorine cleaner (bleaching agent) helps to combat mould/algae and fungi. For well-established mould/algae and fungi several treatments are often necessary; special anti-mould/ algae and fungi cleaners are available from specialist retailers. We would advise against using bark mulch in the immediate vicinity, as this generally contains mould spores. Under certain climatic conditions and where installation is not compliant with REHAU standards, fungal growth is also possible. However, the risk of this can be reduced by keeping the decking clean and dry. It is therefore important to ensure that the decking (with gap spacing) and the substructure are well ventilated in accordance with the official installation instructions. Rust: To eliminate spots of rust we recommend an oxalic or phosphoric acid-based cleaner. The materials supplied (brackets, screws...) made of high quality, coated stainless steel are to be used to secure the proles. Otherwise, rust may form and damage the xing components. Snow and ice: In order to prevent scratches on the decking, we recommend using plastic shovels to remove snow; never scrape or hack away at ice with an ice pick. General gritting salt can also be used to remove snow and ice. Stains could occur when doing this, but are easy to remove. 3.3 Processing/assembly advice Please observe the current installation instructions. Processing: The RELAZZO decking boards can generally be processed using common woodworking tools. Drilling, sawing, milling and planing are also possible in principle. However, due to the polymer content, a reduced service life of the tool blades is to be expected. When sawing (with a circular saw) a hardened metal saw blade with alternating teeth is recommended. Clean deburring is generally advisable. Construction: The construction is dependent rst and foremost on the sub-base. This can be ballast, concrete or a sealed surface (at roof), see installation instructions. It is always to be checked that the subsoil is sufficiently load-bearing to withstand the future load. Ballast sub-base: The coarse ballast must rst of all be well compacted into a frost-proof sub-base (consult local building regulations), in order to then be able to form an approx. 5 cm high gravel bed on top of it, which is simultaneously created with a gradient of 1-2 %. The substructure proles are then laid on pads (stone, paving slabs) in order to avoid stagnant moisture and xed in place using the assembly brackets or screws on the adjusting feet. Concrete sub-base: A gradient of 1-2 % is to be created in the case of a concrete construction. The substructure proles are then laid and xed in place using the assembly brackets.

Note! If the substructure proles are laid across the gradient, rubber spacers, boards (stone, agstone) or adjustable feet are to be laid underneath to avoid stagnant moisture. Overlapping of rubber spacers is to be avoided. Sealed surfaces: It is to be checked whether the at roof materials are compatible with the RELAZZO decking system materials. Any damage to the sealing membrane is to be avoided. A rubber spacer must be used on surfaces that are already sealed in order to avoid stagnant moisture and other damage to the sealing membrane and substructure. Overlapping rubber spacers is to be avoided. The substructure is to be laid oating (the substructure is not screwed to the oor, and instead a substructure frame is built using assembly brackets to which all of the substructures are xed); the prescribed gaps between the substructures are to be observed. The anchoring/ xing of the substructure frame against wind loads is to be agreed with a specialist. In the case of large loads, installation angles other than 90 to the substructure and constant high temperatures, the gap between the substructures is to be narrower (see point 2.5). The assembly brackets are screwed to the substructure using screws and x the decking boards on the left and right as a result of the clamping action. In order to prevent the screws coming loose from the boards and substructure, it is recommended that pilot holes are drilled for the screws with a torque of approx. 1.1 Nm. Expansion: During assembly, it is to be noted that the RELAZZO decking boards (and substructure) may swell and shrink over the next few years as a result of temperature and humidity inuences. It is therefore necessary to ensure that there is an expansion gap between the individual proles themselves and all adjacent objects (house wall, etc.). In addition to this, a sufficiently large supporting surface for the substructure and suitable xings are to be provided. As a rule of thumb: A 3 mm gap is to be left for longitudinal joints for each running metre of decking and substructure. Edging strip: If there isnt enough room for a whole board at the end of an installation, the whole edge board can be trimmed along the length. The trimmed board is xed in place using mounting plates and countersunk screws. If a vertical edge decking board is additionally used at the edge, xing brackets and countersunk screws are used.

Edge termination: The hollow ends of the decking board can be nished with the RELAZZO end caps, the aluminium end strip or the exible termination.

3.4 Storage suggestions and handling The decking boards and the substructure are supplied in timber frame crates; the prole package is wrapped in lm. Nevertheless, we recommend storage in a warehouse or at least indoors in order to prevent discolouration due to moisture and sunlight. If covered permanently, discolouration, so-called mildew stains, of the decking may occur. Opened packaging units and unused proles are always to be stored at in dry conditions. Generally it is important to ensure that work areas are clean in order to avoid dirt and scratches, etc. If individual parts are stacked it is to be ensured that any damage to boards and substructures is avoided.

The end caps are to be glued ush to the boards with the RELAZZO adhesive (see image). To do this, dust should be removed from the adhesive surfaces using acetone. It is to be ensured that the ventilation/drainage slots retain their function and are not sealed by the adhesive. In order to increase the adhesion force, it is recommended to sand and/or apply primer to the contact surfaces (see material data sheet adhesive). When tting the aluminium end trim, it is helpful to x the supplied spacer blocks to the end trim using instant adhesive. The exible end trim can be used to seal the decking boards even on non-straight edges. To do this a groove is routed into the end of the board with a router, the RELAZZO decking adhesive applied to the barbed spacer block and the soft trim pressed into the groove by hand or with the help of a rubber mallet. Sealing the hollow sections reduces the amount of dirt or water that is able to ingress into the cavities. Visually all system components form an attractive and high quality edging. Joint cover prole: The joint cover prole is only resistant to being sprayed with chlorinated water. Frequent contact with chlorinated water can lead to bleaching of, and damage to the prole.
