Women wont apply to certain jobs as
wording puts themoff, says research
THE wording of an employment ad can be a
crucial factor as to whether the job goes to a
woman or a man as women tend not to ap-
ply in certain cases.
They feel less inclined to respond to ads
containing frequently used words like deter-
mined and assertive because such words
are linked with male stereotypes.
This is one of the findings of a research pro-
ject in which scientists from the Technische
Universitt Mnchen studied how leaders are
selected and assessed.
They also gleaned some important knowledge
about the role of emotions, debunking the cli-
ch that leaders are more successful if they
regularly show anger towards their team.
We dont have many women in management
roles because we get so few good applicants
companies can be heard lamenting this state
of affairs with increasing frequency.
Just an excuse? Scientists from the TUM
have discovered something that actually does
deter women from applying for a job, even if
they are qualified: the wording of the job ads.
The scientists showed some 260 test subjects
fictional employment ads. These included, for
example, a place in a training programme for
potential management positions.
If the advertisement described a large num-
ber of traits associated with men, the women
found it less appealing and were less inclined
to apply.
Such traits include assertive, independ-
ent, aggressive and analytical.
Women found words like dedicated,
responsible, conscientious and sociable
more appealing.
For male test subjects, on the other hand,
the wording of the job advertisement made
no difference.
A carefully-formulated job posting is es-
sential to get the best choice of personnel,
says Professor Claudia Peus from the Chair
of Research and Science Management, who
headed the study.
In most cases, it doesnt make sense to sim-
ply leave out all of the male-sounding phras-
es. But without a profile featuring at least
balanced wording, organisations are robbing
themselves of the chance of attracting good
female applicants. And thats because the ste-
reotypes endure almost unchanged in spite
of all of the societal transformation we have
experienced.
Whether women are believed to have the
will to lead others depends largely on the
emotions they show.
This is one of the findings expounded at an
interim presentation of the project last year.
The team of scientists has since studied the
role of emotions in how leaders are judged in
more detail:
Bosses need to display anger from time to
time in order to assert themselves or so the
prevailing belief goes. In a bid to examine
the validity of this clich, the scientists
showed more than 500 test subjects videos or
scenarios, in words and pictures, of a leader
summarising a bad business year to em-
ployees. The superiors showed either anger,
sadness or no emotions.
The way the test subjects saw it, the angry
bosses drew their power predominantly from
the threat of penalties and by emphasising
their status.
They obtained less power by showing their
appreciation for others than did the leaders
who displayed sadness or emotions. Angry
superiors thus lost out on an interpersonal
level. Consequently, the test subjects would be
less loyal to the angry managers and would
rather attempt to thwart them in their inten-
tions.
A tough tone of voice equals authority
thats just not true, says head of study
Professor Isabell M. Welpe from the Chair of
Strategy and Organisation.
The position of power held by leaders who
take their anger out on their staff may indeed
be acknowledged. But it doesnt earn them
lasting loyalty on the contrary, they risk be-
ing betrayed at the next opportunity.
A further study confirmed that a bosss
empathy has a positive impact.
The scientists questioned more than 400 test
subjects on their own working lives or asked
them to evaluate a fictional meeting following
successful talks with a customer.
The focus was on whether the managers
expressed gratitude to their staff or pride in
their own achievements.
What the study found was that saying
thanks brings many advantages, not only in
real life but in working life too: the more the
managers expressed their gratitude, the hap-
pier employees were, both with their boss and
with their job in general.
On the other hand, a leaders pride may
boost peoples general job satisfaction, but the
leaders themselves fell in the team members
estimation for being too self-centered.

EXPERIENCED COPY EDITORS
Working as part of a team, typical candidates will
be experienced in copy-editing. They must be highly
motivated, have the enthusiasm to cope with short
deadlines and tight turnaround times and the ability
to spot mistakes and write great headlines. A solid
knowledge of the law is also essential.
GRADUATE TRAINEE COPY EDITORS
If you have recently achieved a degree and have
considered a future in publishing or media, we can
offer you a great opportunity of on-job training towards
a copy editing qualication, provided by a leading
university and accredited by a leading body in the
world of journalism. Typically, you may be a graduate
in English, history or similar but you will need to have
plenty of enthusiasm and energy.
GRAPHIC ARTISTS
Creatively experienced in the use of InDesign, typical
candidates will need to be able to design feature and
page layouts that enhance the editorial and commercial
content supplied. Working to tight deadlines and as part
of a team, this is a great opportunity to gain commercial
experience in a creative environment.

full time Telesales executive, working 37.5 hours per week.
The Role
Working towards an individual sales target you will be expected to be
resourceful and self motivated. Sourcing and canvassing new clients to
introduce to our portfolio and in-turn being proactive and creative in nding
solutions to their advertising and marketing needs. This will run in sync with
the ongoing management of existing, established clients, ensuring they are
receiving the best possible value from our product portfolio. You will also be
expected to share best practices and new ideas with your peers within the
Telesales team with a view to formation of new marketing solutions for our
clients.
The Person
As a Telesales Executive you will need to be self motivated and driven
towards achieving revenue targets. Condence in working under your own
initiative is essential, although there will be occasions that you are required
to work on team projects.
Time management is key to this role, along with being able to adhere to
rigid deadlines. Previous sales and/or customer service experience could be
advantageous, although this is not an essential requirement as a comprehensive
training programme is in place. A good telephone manner coupled with
ability to communicate clearly and concisely is fundamental to this role.
The Package

plus an additional uncapped bonus potential
