Slide 1: This presentation will demonstrate how to configure IPv6 EIGRP, as well as demonstrating the difference etween real

e!uipment and pac"et tracer#

Slide $: This is the topolog% we are going to use to demonstrate how to configure IPv6 EIGRP# &ranch $ and ranch ' were pre(configured with EIGRP# )e are going to demonstrate using ranch 1#

Slide ': )hen ena ling IPv6 EIGRP on a router, %ou must first ma"e sure ipv6 unicast(routing is ena led, or %ou will receive an error message# *nce that is configured, we can go ahead and ena le EIGRP on the router, along with the router I+# The EIGRP router I+ is normall% selected in the same manner as *SP,# The highest IP address assigned to a -oop ac" interface is selected as the router I+# If there are not an% loop ac" addresses configured, the highest IP address assigned to an% other interface is chosen as the router I+# *r we can simpl% hard(code the router I+ using the EIGRP router I+ command# The purpose of the EIGRP router I+ is that it can e used as a loop prevention mechanism for e.ternal routes# /otice how there are two different command sets for real e!uipment and pac"et tracer# In order to ena le ipv6 EIGRP and pac"et tracer, %ou enter the ipv6 EIGRP process I+, then configure a router I+, followed % the no shutdown command# The no shutdown command ena les the ipv6 EIGRP process and pac"et tracer, ut not necessaril% on real e!uipment# /otice the difference in commands when using real e!uipment# 0ou enter the ipv6 router process I+ num er, followed % the router I+ command# )hen using real e!uipment, %ou can use either the EIGRP router I+ command, or 1ust router I+ with the address# )hen %ou issue the show run command, it will displa% the router I+ with EIGRP efore it# -et2s go ahead and configure ranch 1 in pac"et tracer, with ipv6 EIGRP#

3screen4 5s %ou can see, the error message occurred when ipv6 unicast(routing was not ena led# If we fail to enter the no shutdown command, the ipvr6 EIGRP routing process will not e ena led# 5s %ou notice in the running configuration, it sa%s shutdown# /ow let2s go to P6TT0 and enter the commands on real e!uipment#

5gain, the error message appears ecause ipv6 unicast(routing was not ena led# /ow if I go into the running configuration, %ou2ll notice that it doesn2t sa% shutdown where EIGRP is# 0ou2ll also notice it sa%s EIGRP router I+, even though all we entered was the router I+ command#

Slide 7: 6nli"e IPv7 EIGRP, IPv6 EIGRP does not re!uire the use of networ" command to advertise its networ"s# Instead IPv6 EIGRP must e ena led on all of the router2s interfaces# This command must e configured on all of the router2s interfaces that are participating in EIGRP# If we fail to configure this command on an interface, that networ" will not e advertised, therefore, it will not e learned % its neigh ors#

Slide 8: )hen IPv6 EIGRP is configured on all interfaces, a log message will inform %ou that an ad1acenc% has een formed# /ow let2s go to pac"et tracer and configure the interfaces to participate in EIGRP#

3screen4 /otice how no ad1acencies are formed# This is ecause we did not ena le the ipv6 EIGRP routing process using the no(shutdown command# *nce a command is entered, an ad1acenc% is formed# /ow let2s go to ranch 1 in real e!uipment and compare the difference# /otice how an ad1acenc% forms once I ena le EIGRP on the serial interface# -et2s issue the show IP route command and notice how nothing is eing displa%ed# This is ecause the ta le is for ipv7 networ"s, ut since we are using ipv6, we have to issue the ipv6 route commands# /otice how ranch 1 has learned networ"s from the other routers, as evidenced % the + in the ipv6 routing ta le# The - in the routing ta le is a new identifier, which indicates a specific address assigned to an interface, as opposed to the 9, which onl% displa%s the su net# 0ou2ll also notice that the - displa%s a 1$:( it prefi., where the 9 displa%s the actual prefi. configured on the interface#

Slide 6:

This is the show ipv6 eigrp neigh or command# 5s %ou notice, the lin"(local address is used to identif% neigh oring ipv6 EIGRP routers#

Slide ;: The show IPv6 protocols command first shows that it2s radical protocol eing used is eigrp 1<<# Then it displa%s the = metrics# Then, if %ou notice elow that, it sa%s interfaces# Serial <><>< and Serial <><>1# These are the interfaces that are participating, or ena led, for the EIGRP IPv6, and on the ottom it sa%s distance: internal ?<, e.ternal 1;<# These are the administrative distances for EIGRP#

Slide :: The show IPv6 route command displa%s more learned routes, as well as the 9s which are directl% connected, and the -s which are the interface addresses#

Slide ?: The passive(interface is not currentl% supported % the current version of Pac"et Tracer for IPv6 EIGRP# &ut hopefull% it will e added to our future version# 0ou can use the passive interface command to control the advertisement of routing information# The command ena les the suppression of routing updates over some interfaces while it allows updates to e e.changed normall% over other interfaces# )hen used with EIGRP, it suppresses the e.change of hello pac"ets etween routers which will result in the loss of a neigh or relationship# Therefore, it is onl% used on interfaces where no routers are connected# This stops not onl% routing updates from eing advertised, ut it also suppresses incoming routing updates#

Slide 1<: The configuration is the same as those with IPv7 EIGRP# -et2s go to P6TT0 to show###

3screen4 ###IPv6 procol command and how it shows how giga it interfaces are participating in EIGRP# 0ou notice that it shows not onl% giga it interfaces, ut the serial interface as well#

/ow we are going to enter the passive interface command and suppress routing updates from eing sent across giga it interfaces# /ow let2s go ac" to the show ipv6 protocol command and notice how it displa%s passive ne.t to the giga it interfaces# This tells %ou that the passive interface command was ena led#

Slide 11: 3no speech4

Slide 1$: /ow we are going to summarise &ranch('@s -5/s into one summar% address and then advertise to &ranch($#

Slide 1': SummariAed addresses are ased on common its in the networ" portion of the address# These two networ"s have 6'( its in common# 5s %ou can see, the% have 16( its in common on the first three he.tets, and 18( its in the fourth he.tet, giving %ou 6'( its in total# Therefore, the summar% address would e $<<1:+&::595+:5::>6'#

Slide 17: To advertise a summar% address, issue the ipv6 summar%(address eigrp 5S address command and appl% it to an interface where %ou would li"e the address to e advertised# This is applied to the serial interface that is connected to ranch $# This command is onl% entered on interfaces that connect to other routers# &efore we configure the summar% route on ranch ', let2s go into ranch $ and enter the show ipv6 route command#

3screen4 Bere %ou2ll notice how oth routes are visi le in the routing ta le# /ow let2s go ahead and esta lish the summar% route on ranch ' Serial<><>1 interface# This is the interface that connects to ranch($# /ow if ranch(' were connected to another router, sa% ranch(7 on a Serial<><>< interface, we would configure the same command on that interface as well#

/ow let2s go ac" to ranch($ and issue the show ipv6 route command# &ut first did %ou notice how it changed the neigh or ad1acenc%# 5 log message appeared, displa%ing this# In ranch($, notice how I replace the two routes with one summar% route with the prefi. of 6'#

Slide 18: /ormall%, if a specific route to a particular networ" does not e.ist, a router will drop all traffic destined to that networ"# 5 default route, or Cgatewa% of last resortC, allows traffic to e forwarded, even without a specific route to a particular networ" listed in the routing ta le, )ith ipv6, a default route is identified the ipv6 route ::><, the e.it interface, the ne.t hot router, or a full% specified route which uses oth the e.it interface and the address of the net hot router# )e are going to configure a default router on ranch($, pointing to its loop ac" interface# This will e used to simulate the internet# In order to propagate the default route, we entered the reesta lished static command, in IPD6 router mode#

Slide 16: This slide shows the difference etween the router that I configured with the default route, in this case ranch($, and the output of the router that learnt the default route ( ranch(1# The default route was configured on &ranch($ and is displa%ed as a static route via the -oop ac" interface# &ranch(1 displa%s the default route in its routing ta le as an e.ternal route# The onl% differences etween IPv7 EIGRP and IPv6 EIGRP is 314 there is no asteris" shown on the device that creates the default route and it doesn@t list the gatewa% of last resort# This completes m% presentation on ipv6 EIGRP# I hope this was a helpful demonstration and ma% %our networ"s continue to converge#
