THE EXPERIENCE OF WORLWIDE CLIMATES IN

A 35 KILOMETER STRETCH

Written by: Andrew Mboma

The Climb
Many travel the world to experience different
climates not realizing what Mountain
Kilimanjaro, (the tallest single standing
mountain in the world), has to offer. When told
as a story, no one can ever grasp the
magnificence of the nature found in a 35

kilometers stretch over a 5 day journey to the

roof of Africa.

Ben Mashiba at Uhuru Peak

Its unbelievable that one starts the journey in
Moshi Town where the temperature is an
average of 27 degree centigrade and ends his/her
journey at Uhuru Peak where the average
temperature is 18 degrees centigrade and this
is all within those 35 kms.
Four days, 35 kms adventure from the gate to the
Uhuru Peak via the Marangu Route takes you
through all the climates and vegetation that are
so diversely found in the world.
Day One
The first day takes you from the gate to Mandara
Hut, where you will be hiking in the tropical rain
forest surrounded by beautiful tree and
vegetation.

Day 2
On day two (tropical forest to semi desert hike) is
that day that you will hike from Mandara Hut to
Horombo Hut. On this Day, you will not stop
noticing that the more you keep walking, the
more the trees keep getting shorter whilst you
keep seeing vegetation that you have never seen
in your life.

Day 3
Day three is the desert walk day and your day
starts with a walk through a semi desert until
you reach the last water point and then hike on a
dessert until you reach the Kibo hut.

Day 4

Day four is the toughest one since you have only

5 hours to rest and have more than 24 kms of
ascending and descending to do in one day. As
much as its the toughest day that one can sleep
whilst standing, it is still the most rewarding day
of the adventure that everyone looks forward to
reach the Uhuru Peak.

The adventure was of a group of 13 Tanzanians

(AgathaMarie John, Aziza Semboja, Andrew
Mboma, Ben Mashiba, Bingi Juma, Dorothy
Kipeja, Ellen Lupili, Immaculate Stephen, Gaure
Mdee, Nasra Kondo, Ritha Mkama, Sarah Mmari
and Sato Wasira) who were brought together by
Vinjari Company (www.vinjari.co.tz) to
participate in the challenge to conquer Mountain
Kilimanjaro. The group was a combination of
entrepreneurs and people from the cooperate
sector who like living healthy and enjoys nature.
As all the people in our group were black, we
were awarded the name of Kundi la Weusi on
the mountain, as our combination seemed very

strange to every porter and guide. Many asked if

we were from a college/university and were
shocked to find out that we were a group of
Tanzanians from Dar es Salaam who simply
chose the conquer the beast in our backyard. 12
People in the group made it to Kibo Hut, 5 made
it to Gilmans Point and 3 made it to the Uhuru
Peak.

The group took this challenge in March 2014 with

an urge of knowing what Mountain Kilimanjaro
has to offer and considered the challenge to be
the most amazing experience they have ever had
and have vowed to be back on the mountain
before the end of the year, via another route. The
trip was planned and organized by Vinjari
Company Limited
