SURGICAL 3D PRINTING BIOPEN

INTRODUCTION: The Bio-Pen works similar to 3D printing methods by delivering cell material inside a bio-polymer such as alginate, a seaweed extract, protected by a second, outer layer of gel material. A Bio-Pen that allows surgeons to draw layers of healing cells on damaged bones , muscles and cartilage

STAR T BIO-INK PERPARATION

BIO-INK:
Bio-ink is a material made from living cells that behaves much like a liquid, allowing people to "print" it in order to create a desired shape. Bio-ink is durable, bond for uncoated surfaces. The most obvious potential use for bio-ink is in skin grafting. Bio-ink could also be used to make replacements for vascular material removed during surgeries, allowing people to receive new veins and arteries.

WORKING PRINCIPLE:

The Bio-Pen uses a stem cell ink which can be coaxed into differentiating into muscle, bone, or nerve cells. A seaweed-based growth culture encourages the cells to thrive in their new environment while a second polymer, cured by the use of a UV light, provides a protective shell during the healing process. The complex and adaptive bio-ink can even be further augmented to include growth hormone and other substances that would encourage rapid recovery. Once the cells are 'drawn' onto the surgery site they will multiply, become differentiated into nerve cells, muscle cells or bone cells and will eventually turn from individual cells into a thriving community of cells in the form of a functioning a tissue, such as nerves, or a muscle. The device can also be seeded with growth factors or other drugs to assist regrowth and recovery, while the hand-held design allows for precision in theatre and ease of transportation APPLICATIONS:

Surgical 3D printing bio-pen use for any type of tissue healing. During surgery surgeon can draw the missing part of bone, tissue or cells on any damaged part of the patients body. The Bio-Pen works by laying a matrix of cellular material onto a damaged section of bone. As a surgeon draws over an area more material can be layered, building an osteon repair. It can also use to draw a layer on muscle cell and nerve cells when they damage in any accident.
