Gary Wong, Conner Meckfessel and Asher Kalman after the 4Way Test Speech Contest

Gary began the program by explaining the origin and meaning of the Rotary 4-Way Test and how it should be interwoven into the speeches. He also identified the additional contest theme this year Whats Life Without Adventure?.

Asher was the first to speak applying the tenets of the test to the United States current aid program in Syria. His general conclusion, after applying the test components was that our current programs in Syria pass the test. Conner applied the 4-Way Test components to our current Congressional Lobbyists in Washington. The test part analysis proved to Connor that our current processes are broken and that things need to change. After much deliberation, our team of judges named Conner the winner by a slim margin. Cliff Dochterman ended the program by congratulating our speakers, encouraging them to continue with their efforts and letting them know that Rotary needs them going forward. He then presented our speakers with a copy of his book. Connor and Ashers coach, Kristen Plant described the excellent public speaking program at Miramonte and how it is implemented across all grade levels at the school. She also told the audience about the success of the program both in the state of California and the nation.

THE EDITORS COMMENTS

At our meeting last night, President-Elect, Debbie Roessler was busy handing out the thank you notes for everyones support of Nite at the Races 2014. I think it is important to not only thank all of you who donated to the event but also those who do the block and tackle type of work (like Debbie organizing and producing thank you note/receipts or Mary Sue Erickson producing decorations and baskets for the event). This newsletter editor would like to take a moment this week to thank all of our members, spouses and friends for all that they do for the Rotary Club of Moraga!! Sue Breedlove, the current President of the Rotary Club of Orinda talked to me about how she and her husband, Jim, enjoyed helping us out at the Nite at the Races. She asked that we make sure to include them again in our event next year. Thank you, Sue and Jim, for your help at the bar that night!! What a great group of Rotary Clubs we have in this area!
