! The developmental process is complex and uses cell division.

What are embryos and how do they grow and develop?! " People often argue over when a baby is conceived. Is it when the heartbeat is rst able to be heard or when the egg is fertilized? During the development of the embryo in the rst 10 weeks of pregnancy the heartbeat can be heard (unique ultrasound 2014). At the time of conception after the egg is fertilized by sperm the egg divides into two identical cells called blastomere (unique ultrasound 2014). These cells continue to divide once every twelve hours as it passes down the fallopian tubes..When the embryo reaches the end of the fallopian tubes it has 46 chromosomes. Twenty three are from the mom and twenty three are from the dad. (unique ultrasound 2014) Now the embryo has its own DNA structure di#erent from any other human. At about 3 days after conception the embryo has 16 cells and is called a Marula which is the early stage of embryonic development. At ten days after conception the embryo has moved all the way down the fallopian tube and has fully attached to the endometrium which is the lining of the uterus. About 12 days after conception the embryo begins to produce hormones which can be detected in a womans urine. (unique ultrasound 2014) At about three weeks after conception the embryo is 1/12 an inch long and the heart begins to beat. At 4 weeks the embryo looks like a small tadpole and is an inch in length. (unique ultrasound 2014). At 5 weeks the embryo develops tiny buds that will develop into arms and legs. By 6 weeks the embryo is $ an inch in length and has developed eyes. You now understand how an embryo forms but when does it become a fetus?! ! When and how does an embryo grow enough to be called a fetus?! " At 8 weeks after conception the primitive brain begins to form. The human brain has 3 parts. They are the reptilian, the limbiotic, and the neocortex. The reptilian is the rst part to form and oldest and controls vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, body temperature, and balance. The limbiotic part is the next part to develop and this part controls good and bad memories and emotions. The last part to develop is the neocortex. This part controls development of language and also imagination. Also at 8 weeks of age the heartbeat can be seen and heard through an ultrasound. Anywhere between 8-12 weeks after conception an embryo is now called a fetus. At this point a person must decide if the

embryo is now a fetus due to a beating heart, or because the cells can feel pain, or because it looks like a human.! ! Scientists often argue over what stage of development allows an embryo to be called a fetus. A fetus is considered a baby and not just a group of cells. Some scientists say and embryo is a fetus when it is able to feel pain. Others say it is when the heart begins to beat. Others argue is is after the embryo has formed a developed brain. Some people consider it a fetus when it actually looks like a tiny fully formed baby. Scientist Dianne N. Irving, M.A., Ph.D. said "fertilization refers to the initiation of a new human being." Meaning when the egg is fertilized by sperm.! ! Conclusion:! " Based on the information I have provided today, I leave you with this question. When do you think an embryo should be called a fetus which many view as being a baby?! !
