Foreword
With the publication of this book, Gods Amazing Grace, we now have
ten Ellen G. White devotional volumes. The fact that a worldwide church
would publish ten such volumes from one author is significant. No other
writer has been so honored. While all of the morning watch volumes have
been deeply spiritual, reflecting the dedication of the numerous authors and
their literary skills, none could write with the deep insights of this one unique
writer. And what is the explanation? It certainly would be a mistake to give
credit to Ellen White, the person. Doubtless, if she were alive, she would
make this humble explanation:
Sister White is not the originator of these books. They contain the
instruction that during her lifework God has been giving her. They contain
the precious, comforting light that God has graciously given his servant to
be given to the world. From their pages this light is to shine into the hearts
of men and women, leading them to the Saviour. The Review and Herald,
January 20, 1903.
And perhaps thousands who read the inspired messages of this volume
will be led into a more intimate experience with Jesus Christ. Thus they will
partake of his amazing grace which Ellen White described as An attribute
of God shown to undeserving human beings. We did not seek after it, She
explained, But it was sent in search of us.
The statements on this subject of grace permeate the many printed spirit
of prophecy volumes. These rich sources have yielded the prime selections.
The periodicals such as the Review and Herald, Signs of the Times, and The
Youths Instructor, also provide helpful facets for study.
When only part of a reference is used, the omissions in this book are
recognized in the usual way. In many cases the reading for the day consists
of a number of choice quotations grouped together as a composite statement.
At the close of the volume the individual source credits will be found, and
also a scripture index.
Gods Amazing Grace was compiled under the direction of the Ellen G.

Mrs. Whites pen. It should be recalled that compilations from this writer

are made by the Trustees in harmony with the provisions of her will, which
call for such selections to be gathered together and printed in books as the
need might arise.
It is our hope that these brief day-by-day counsels and thoughts will
encourage the reader to draw more heavily upon the infinite resources of
Gods grace, and reach that perfection required for translation to heaven. This
is the urgent preparation needed by all Adventists today, and it is our prayer
that this book will contribute to a revival experience and true reformation in
the church.

Chapter 45Sonship
As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his name. John 1:12.
When Adams sin plunged the race into hopeless misery, God might
have cut Himself loose from fallen beings. He might have treated them as
sinners deserved to be treated. He might have commanded the angels of
heaven to pour out upon our world the vials of His wrath. He might have
removed this dark blot from His universe. But He did not do this. Instead of
banishing them from His presence, He came still nearer to the fallen race.
He gave His Son to become bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. The
Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, ... full of grace and truth (John
1:14). Christ by His human relationship to men drew them close to God.
He clothed His divine nature with the garb of humanity, and demonstrated
before the heavenly universe, before the unfallen worlds, how much God
loves the children of men.
The gift of God to man is beyond all computation. Nothing was withheld.
God would not permit it to be said that He could have done more or revealed
to humanity a greater measure of love. In the gift of Christ He gave all
heaven.
Divine sonship is not something that we gain of ourselves. Only to those
who receive Christ as their Saviour is given the power to become sons and
daughters of God. The sinner cannot, by any power of his own, rid himself
of sin.... But the promise of sonship is made to all who believe on His name.
Every one who comes to Jesus in faith will receive pardon.
God was to be manifest in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself (2
Corinthians 5:19). Man had become so degraded by sin that it was impossible
for him, in himself, to come into harmony with Him whose nature is purity
and goodness. But Christ, after having redeemed man from the condemnation
of the law, could impart divine power to unite with human effort. Thus by
repentance toward God and faith in Christ the fallen children of Adam might
once more become sons of God.

Chapter 122Everlasting
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and
I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of
David. Isaiah 55:3.
The salvation of the human race has ever been the object of the councils
of heaven. The covenant of mercy was made before the foundation of the
world. It has existed from all eternity, and is called the everlasting covenant.
So surely as there never was a time when God was not, so surely there never
was a moment when it was not the delight of the eternal mind to manifest
His grace to humanity.
From the opening of the great controversy it has been Satans purpose
to misrepresent Gods character, and to excite rebellion against His law....
But amid the working of evil, Gods purposes move steadily forward to
their accomplishment; to all created intelligences He is making manifest His
justice and benevolence. Through Satans temptations the whole human race
have become transgressors of Gods law, but by the sacrifice of His Son a
way is opened whereby they may return to God. Through the grace of Christ
they may be enabled to render obedience to the Fathers law. Thus in every
age, from the midst of apostasy and rebellion, God gathers out a people that
are true to Hima people in whose heart is his law.
Gods work is the same in all time, although there are different degrees
of development and different manifestations of His power, to meet the wants
of men in the different ages. Beginning with the first gospel promise, and
coming down through the patriarchal and Jewish ages, and even to the present
time, there has been a gradual unfolding of the purposes of God in the plan
of redemption.... He who proclaimed the law from Sinai, and delivered to
Moses the precepts of the ritual law, is the same that spoke the sermon on
the mount.... The Teacher is the same in both dispensations. Gods claims
are the same. The principles of His government are the same.
In the closing work of God in the earth, the standard of His law will be
again exalted.... God will not break His covenant, nor alter the thing that has
187
188
gone out of His lips. His word will stand fast forever as unalterable as His

Chapter 185Pentecost
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as
of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were
sitting. Acts 2:1, 2.
The Spirit came upon the waiting, praying disciples with a fullness that
reached every heart. The Infinite One revealed Himself in power to His
church. It was as if for ages this influence had been held in restraint, and
now Heaven rejoiced in being able to pour out upon the church the riches of
the Spirits grace. And under the influence of the Spirit, words of penitence
and confession mingled with songs of praise for sins forgiven. Words of
thanksgiving and of prophecy were heard. All heaven bent low to behold and
to adore the wisdom of matchless, incomprehensible love. Lost in wonder,
the apostles exclaimed, Herein is love. They grasped the imparted gift.
And what followed? The sword of the Spirit, newly edged with power and
bathed in the lightnings of heaven, cut its way through unbelief. Thousands
were converted in a day....
Christs ascension to heaven was the signal that His followers were to
receive the promised blessing. For this they were to wait before they entered
upon their work. When Christ passed within the heavenly gates, He was
enthroned amidst the adoration of the angels. As soon as this ceremony was
completed, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in rich currents, and
Christ was indeed glorified, even with the glory which He had with the Father
from all eternity. The Pentecostal outpouring was Heavens communication
that the Redeemers inauguration was accomplished. According to His
promise He had sent the Holy Spirit from heaven to His followers, as a token
that He had, as Priest and King, received all authority in heaven and on earth,
and was the Anointed One over His people.
God is willing to give us a similar blessing, when we seek for it as
earnestly. The Lord did not lock the reservoir of heaven after pouring His
Spirit upon the early disciples. We also may receive of the fullness of His
273

blessing. Heaven is full of the treasures of His grace, and those who come to
[194] God in faith may claim all that He has promised.

Chapter 248Self-Mastery
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth
his spirit than he that taketh a city. Proverbs 16:32.
The highest evidence of nobility in a Christian is self-control. He who
can stand unmoved amid a storm of abuse is one of Gods heroes. To rule the
spirit is to keep self under discipline; to resist evil; to regulate every word
and deed by Gods great standard of righteousness. He who has learned
to rule his spirit will rise above the slights, the rebuffs, the annoyances, to
which we are daily exposed, and these will cease to cast a gloom over his
spirit.
It is Gods purpose that the kingly power of sanctified reason, controlled
by divine grace, shall bear sway in the lives of human beings. He who rules
his spirit is in possession of this power.
The body is a most important medium through which the mind and
the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the
adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading
of the physical powers.... The body is to be brought into subjection to the
higher powers of the being. The passions are to be controlled by the will,
which is itself to be under the control of God.... Intellectual power, physical
stamina, and the length of life depend upon immutable laws. Through
obedience to these laws, man may stand conqueror of himself, conqueror of
his own inclinations, conqueror of principalities and powers of the rulers
of the darkness of this world, and of spiritual wickedness in high places
(Ephesians 6:12)....
The spirit that possessed Daniel, the youth of today may have; they may
draw from the same source of strength, possess the same power of selfcontrol, and reveal the same grace in their lives, even under circumstances
as unfavorable. Though surrounded by temptations to self-indulgence,
especially in our large cities, where every form of sensual gratification
is made easy and inviting, yet by divine grace their purpose to honor God
may remain firm. Through strong resolution and vigilant watchfulness they
[257] may withstand every temptation that assails the soul.
356
359
divine incentives will urge us on, the mind will become balanced, and the
[259]
restlessness of the soul will be banished in repose in Christ.
Chapter 252All-Sufficient
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2
Timothy 2:1.
The lessons contained in the words of Paul to Timothy are of the
greatest importance to us today. He charges him to be strongin his
own wisdom? No, but in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. He who would
be a follower of Christ is not to rely upon his own capabilities, or to feel
confident in himself. Neither is he to be dwarfed in his religious efforts, to
shun responsibilities, and remain inefficient in the cause of God.... If the
Christian feels his weakness, his inability, by putting his trust in God, he will
find the grace of Christ sufficient for every emergency.
The soldier of Christ must meet many forms of temptation, and resist and
overcome them. The fiercer the conflict, the greater the supply of grace to
meet the need of the soul.... The true Christian will understand what it means
to pass through severe conflicts and trying experiences; but he will steadily
increase in the grace of Christ to meet successfully the enemy of his soul....
The darkness will press upon his soul at times; but the true light will shine,
the bright beams of the Sun of righteousness will dispel the gloom; and ...
through the grace of Christ he will be enabled to be a faithful witness of the
things which he has heard from the inspired messenger of God.... By thus
communicating truth to others, the worker for Christ obtains a clearer view
of the abundant provisions made for all, of the sufficiency of the grace of
Christ for every time of conflict, sorrow, and trial. Through the mysterious
plan of redemption, grace has been provided, so that the imperfect work of
the human agent may be accepted in the name of Jesus our Advocate.
Man has little power, and can accomplish but a small work at his very
best.... God is omnipotent, and at every point where we need divine help
and seek for it in sincerity, it will be given. God has pledged His word that
His grace will be sufficient for you in your greatest necessity, in your sorest
distress. Christ will be to you a present help if you will appropriate His
[261]
grace.

Chapter 269Irresistible
Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that
fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before
the sons of men! Psalm 31:19.
The Lord calls upon us for confession of His goodness.... Our confession
of His faithfulness is Heavens chosen agency for revealing Christ to the
world. We are to acknowledge His grace as made known through the holy
men of old; but that which will be most effectual is the testimony of our
own experience. We are witnesses for God as we reveal in ourselves the
working of a power that is divine. Every individual has a life distinct from
all others, and an experience differing essentially from theirs. God desires
that our praise shall ascend to Him, marked by our own individuality. These
precious acknowledgements to the praise of the glory of His grace, when
supported by a Christlike life, have an irresistible power that works for the
salvation of souls.
In order to confess Christ, we must have Him to confess. No one can truly
confess Christ unless the mind and spirit of Christ are in him.... We must
understand what it is to confess Christ and wherein we deny Him.... The
fruits of the Spirit manifested in the life are a confession of Him. If we have
forsaken all for Christ, our lives will be humble, our conversation heavenly,
our conduct blameless. The powerful, purifying influence of truth in the soul,
and the character of Christ exemplified in the life, are a confession of Him.
Integrity, firmness, and perseverance are qualities that all should seek
earnestly to cultivate; for they clothe the possessor with a power which is
irresistiblea power which makes him strong to do good, strong to resist
evil, strong to bear adversity.... Those who have placed themselves without
reserve on the side of Christ will stand firmly by that which reason and
conscience tell them is right.
The life of the true believer reveals an indwelling Saviour. The follower
of Jesus is Christlike in spirit and in temper. Like Christ, he is meek and
humble. His faith works by love and purifies the soul. His whole life is a
[278] testimony to the power of the grace of Christ.

Chapter 271Invincible
The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with
it. Proverbs 10:22.
When in his distress, Jacob laid hold of the Angel, and made supplication
with tears, the heavenly Messenger, in order to try his faith, also reminded
him of his sin, and endeavored to escape from him. But Jacob would not be
turned away. He had learned that God is merciful, and he cast himself upon
His mercy. He pointed back to his repentance for his sin, and pleaded for
deliverance. As he reviewed his life, he was driven almost to despair; but he
held fast the Angel, and with earnest, agonizing cries urged his petition until
he prevailed.
Such will be the experience of Gods people in their final struggle with the
powers of evil. God will test their faith, their perseverance, their confidence
in His power to deliver them. Satan will endeavor to terrify them with the
thought that their cases are hopeless.... They will have a deep sense of their
shortcomings, and as they review their lives, their hopes will sink. But
remembering the greatness of Gods mercy, and their own sincere repentance,
they will plead His promises made through Christ to helpless, repenting
sinners. Their faith will not fail because their prayers are not immediately
answered. They will lay hold of the strength of God, as Jacob laid hold of
the Angel, and the language of their souls will be, I will not let thee go,
except thou bless me (Genesis 32:26)....
Jacobs history is an assurance that God will not cast off those who have
been betrayed into sin, but who have returned unto Him with true repentance.
It was by self-surrender and confiding faith that Jacob gained what he had
failed to gain by conflict in his own strength. God thus taught His servant
that divine power and grace alone could give him the blessing he craved.
Thus it will be with those who live in the last days. As dangers surround
them, and despair seizes upon the soul, they must depend solely upon the
merits of the atonement. We can do nothing of ourselves. In all our helpless
unworthiness we must trust in the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour.
[280] None will ever perish while they do this.

The labor of love springs from the work of faith.... While it is true that
our busy activities will not in themselves ensure salvation, it is also true that
[332] faith which unites us to Christ will stir the soul to activity.
Chapter 324Watch!
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. Mark 14:38.
Many today are asleep, as were the disciples. They are not watching and
praying lest they enter into temptation.
Let every soul be on the alert. The adversary is on your track. Be vigilant,
watching diligently lest some carefully concealed and masterly snare shall
take you unawares. Let the careless and indifferent beware lest the day of
the Lord come upon them as a thief in the night....
He who overcomes must watch; for, with worldly entanglements, error,
and superstition, Satan strives to win Christs followers from Him. It is not
enough that we avoid glaring dangers and perilous, inconsistent moves. We
are to keep close to the side of Christ, walking in the path of self-denial and
sacrifice. We are in an enemys country. He who was cast out of heaven has
come down with great power. With every conceivable artifice and device he
is seeking to take souls captive. Unless we are constantly on guard we shall
fall an easy prey to his unnumbered deceptions.
Warning, admonition, promise, all are for us, upon whom the ends of the
world are come. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch
and be sober (1 Thessalonians 5:6).... Watch against the stealthy approach
of the enemy, watch against old habits and natural inclinations, lest they
assert themselves; force them back, and watch. Watch the thoughts, watch
the plans, lest they become self-centered. Watch over the souls whom Christ
has purchased with His own blood. Watch for opportunities to do them good.
If you draw close to Jesus and seek to adorn your profession by a wellordered life and godly conversation, your feet will be kept from straying into
forbidden paths. If you will only watch, continually watch unto prayer, if
you will do everything as if you were in the immediate presence of God,
you will be saved from yielding to temptation, and may hope to be kept
pure, spotless, and undefiled till the last. If you hold the beginning of your
confidence firm unto the end, your ways will be established in God; and what
[333]
grace has begun, glory will crown in the kingdom of our God.

Chapter 326Established
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which
hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope
through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good
word and work. 2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17.
The Saviour made each work of healing an occasion for implanting
divine principles in the mind and soul. This was the purpose of His work.
He imparted earthly blessings, that He might incline the hearts of men to
receive the gospel of His grace.
For three years the disciples had before them the wonderful example of
Jesus. Day by day they walked and talked with Him, hearing His words of
cheer to the weary and heavy-laden, and seeing the manifestations of His
power in behalf of the sick and afflicted. When the time came for Him to
leave them, He gave them grace and power to carry forward His work in
His name. They were to shed abroad the light of His gospel of love and
healing....
The work which the disciples did, we also are to do. Every Christian
is to be a missionary. In sympathy and compassion we are to minister to
those in need of help.... The Saviour identifies Himself with every child
of humanity.... His followers are not to feel themselves detached from the
perishing world around them. They are a part of the great web of humanity,
and heaven looks upon them as brothers to sinners as well as to saints.... By
all that has given us advantage over anotherbe it education and refinement,
nobility of character, Christian training, religious experiencewe are in debt
to those less favored; and, so far as lies in our power, we are to minister unto
them....
He who becomes a child of God should henceforth look upon himself as
a link in the chain let down to save the world, one with Christ in His plan of
mercy, going forth with Him to seek and save the lost.
The world needs a practical demonstration of what the grace of God can
do in restoring to human beings their lost kingship, giving them mastery of
