East and West Divided Over Benefits, Safety of Red Yeast Rice
Apr 10, 2014

Red yeast rice (RYR) is a special processed rice made with the mold Monascus purpureus grown on the cereal. The end result is a bright reddish-purple fermented rice. Despite its appealing hue and popularity in Asian countries like Korea, Japan and China, its a controversial product that has received lots of attention from both the media and the scientific community lately.Red yeast rice contains several compounds known as monacolins, which block the production of cholesterol. EU regulation 432/2012 permits the use of monacolins with a limit of 10 mgs/day. Before the issue of this European guideline, the maximum quantity was fixed at 3 mgs/day in Italy.

In the United States products containing RYR alone or in combination are commercially available, primarily through Internet retailers. As mentioned, there is some controversy surrounding red yeast rice and its supposed health benefits. In 2001, following controversy over whether a preparation containing RYR should be considered a drug or a dietary supplement, the U.S. District Court in Utah stated RYR must be considered an unapproved drug. In Switzerland its use is still controversial, and Switzerland doesn't allow the sale of red yeast rice. A recent publication by Swissmedic and USAV, the Swiss bureau that deals with human and animal food, explains that its sale is not allowed due to the fact that it is not specified as a chemical/medical product or as a food product. It is red yeast rices liminal position between food and medicine that makes it difficult to categorize. Despite the controversy, it remains a popular product in Asia, where the line between food and medicine is not as definitive as it so often is in the Western world. In Asian markets red yeast rice is sold in jars as pasteurized wet aggregate, as whole dried grains, or as ground powder. Chinese medicine uses red yeast rice to lower cholesterol, improve blood circulation, and aid digestion. It was a commonly used red food coloring in East Asian and Chinese cuisine prior to the discovery of chemical food coloring. China is still its most important producer.

U.S. stock index futures signaled a mildly lower open on Thursday after economic reports had import prices rising in March and jobless claims dipping more than expected last week. Stock-index futures were down 0.1% after the Labor Department reported jobless claims fell by 32,000 to 300,000 in the week ending April 5, dropping to a near seven-year low and below the 320,000 estimated by economists polled by Reuters. Iraq to End Eight-Month Ban on Thailand Rice Imports

Apr 10, 2014

Iraq will soon resume rice imports from Thailand and end its ban on Thai rice after eight months, the DirectorGeneral of Thailand's Foreign Trade Department told local sources. The Director General says that Iraqi

authorities have agreed to purchase rice from Thailand exporters after a government delegation from Bangkok successfully convinced them of the quality of the Thai rice. In our recent visit to Iraq, the Thai mission brought sample rice and cooked for involved authorities to show how good the quality of Thai rice really is, he says. The Thai government has invited Iraqi officials to visit Bangkok this month for further discussions and is awaiting a confirmation. The Director General adds that Iraq is also interested in entering into a government-to-government (G-2-G) deal with Thailand to buy rice directly. Iraq last bought rice under a G-2-G three years ago, according to the Director General.Iraq banned rice imports from Thailand in August 2013 after finding differences in both the quality and weight of rice sent to Iraq by some Thai private exporters. The lifting of the ban by Iraq is good news to the Thailand government which is struggling to sell its rice stockpiles of about 10 million tons to raise funds to make payments to farmers under the rice pledging scheme. Iraq used to be one of the biggest importers of Thai rice and most of the imported rice is reserved for a national food rationing program. The Middle East nation usually issues tenders for 200,000 to 300,000 tons of rice every month. According to the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA), Thailand exported 844,991 tons of rice to Iraq in 2012, up about 35% from 627,300 tons in 2011. In 2013, Iraq was the second largest importer of Thai rice until the ban, accounting for around 638,430 tons of Thailand rice exports.USDA expects Iraq to import about 1.35 million tons of rice in MY 2013-14, down about 4% from about 1.41 million tons imported in MY 2012-13.

Thailand Rice Woes May End Soon as Demand Surges

Apr 10, 2014

Thailand governments problems due to the rice pledging scheme are likely to end soon as demand for Thai rice has been increasing since the beginning of this year.Thailand has exported around 2.11 million tons of rice between January 1 and April 4, 2014, up about 29% from around 1.64 million tons of rice exported during the same period last year. The government still has about 10 million tons of rice stocks and is keen to sell the rice quickly due to quality concerns and the obligation to return about 20 billion baht (around $619 million) to the Finance Ministry by May 31, 2014.However, the government says that exports are likely to surge due to growing demand. Several countries, including the U.S, China and Malaysia, have shown interest in signing G-2G deals with Thailand, according to the Foreign Trade Department. The U.S. is planning to purchase about one million tons of rice from Thailand, and China and Malaysia are planning for a combined 600,000 tons of rice, according to the Department. The Commerce Ministry also stated that China would possibly sign deals to buy an additional one million tons of rice from Thailand after the inspection of some warehouses in Thailand.China, Malaysia and the U.S. are traditional markets for Thai rice. According to data from Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA) the U.S. imported about 382,000 tons of rice in 2013 and about 35,060 tons of rice from Thailand in January 2014. China imported about 277,547 tons of rice in 2013, and about 35,495 tons of rice in January 2014. Malaysia imported 155,230 tons of rice in 2013 and about 9,439 tons of rice in January 2014 from Thailand.

The Foreign Trade Department also says that Iraq will soon resume rice imports from Thailand after a delegation convinced Iraqi officials of the quality of Thai rice. Iraq has already allowed Thailand to participate in a tender to purchase about 30,000 tons of rice. The government is also hopeful of winning the tender to supply 800,000 tons of rice to Philippines.Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry said that about eight traders participated in the auction for about 169,000 tons of rice yesterday at Suphanburi Province and about 15 joined bidding through the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand (AFET) for about 400,000 tons of rice today. The government has sold more than one million tons of rice in March 2014 and is planning to sell around one million tons to raise about 8 billion baht (around $247 million) every month in 2014.

India Rice Exporters Oppose Field Trials of GM Rice

Apr 10, 2014

Indian rice exporters are opposing large-scale field trials of genetically-modified (GM) crops, and say that GM rice could go against the interest of the Indian rice industry, particularly exports, according to local sources. The President of All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) told local sources that unless there are conclusive reports based on extensive testing in controlled environments, it would be against the interest of the rice industry to support trials of GM crops. He says that rice growers were adopting GMO varieties purely for the higher yield and pest resistance ignoring the undesirable effects on consumers and the environment. In February this year, the Genetic Engineering Approval committee (GEAC) approved 'confined field trials' for ten agricultural crops including rice in India. However, companies willing to conduct GM field trials still have to obtain no-objection certificates from the concerned state governments. The Deputy Director of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) says the GEAC approves trials only for restricted cultivation under strict supervision and large-scale trials of GM rice would take place only after scientific validation.India exported more than 3.9 million tons of basmati rice and 6 million tons of non-basmati rice in FY 2013-14 (April - March), according to the AIREA estimates. In the last two fiscal years, India exported about 10 million tons of rice annually, according to the AIREA. The USDA expects India to export around 10 million tons of rice in MY 2013-14, down about 8% from about 10.87 tons exported in MY 2012-13.

Venezuelas Contraband Rice Exports to Colombia Reach Record High in 2012-13, Says USDA Post
Apr 10, 2014

The USDA Post says that Venezuelas contraband rice exports to Colombia reached record high levels in the last two years. The Post says that unofficial rice exports by Venezuela to Colombia stood at around 300,000 tons in 2012-13, which is around 78% of total annual rice production in the country. The Post says that price controls and exchange rate disparity are the two main reasons behind high unofficial cross border rice trade with Colombia. Contraband rice exports to Colombia are causing losses to farmers in Colombia as well. Local sources say that Colombia rice farmers are planning to begin protests against influx of contraband rice today. Venezuelas rice production recovered in 2013 after two years of poor harvests, but the increase does not meet growing demand for rice in the country. The Post says that milled rice production in MY 2013-14 (April March) is estimated to remain at 385,000 tons due to poor prices and high input costs. However, rice consumption is estimated to increase to around 680,000 tons in 2013-14, up about 1.5% from the previous year partly helped by government controlled low prices.Low production, high contraband exports and growing demand lead to low stocks and higher imports, says the Post.

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

Venezuelas rice imports are estimated at around 520,000 tons in MY 2013-14, up about 30% from USDA official estimates of around 400,000 tons. The Post says, Rice imports are significantly higher than previously reported due to new and more reliable information regarding imports from third countries. The Post says that ending rice stocks in Venezuela were reduced below normal average stock levels over the past few years and are expected to be around 102,000 tons in MY 2013-14, down about 43% from USDA official estimates of around 179,000 tons. Current rice stocks will last for just three months, says the Post.

Global Milled Rice Production May Surpass 500 Million Tons in 2014, FAO Says

Global milled rice

production could increase to a record 500.7 million tons (about 751 million tons, basis paddy) in 2014, according to the UNs Food and Agriculture Organizations (FAO) first forecast for the year.FAO says that the first estimate for 2014 global rice production is just 0.8% more than the current estimates for 2013, and a third consecutive season of subdued growth. This is due to the possibility of the occurrence of an El Nio in mid-2014 which could have a strong adverse impact on rice yields in Asia.Global rice trade is forecast to increase to around 39.3 million tons in 2014, up about 1 million tons from FAOs forecast in November 2013. Imports are expected to increase in several Asian countries (Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines and Sri Lanka) due to increasing domestic prices and low stocks. Rice imports by Nigeria, Mali and Tanzania in Africa are expected to increase in 2014 as well. Rice imports by some countries in Latin America (Haiti and Bolivia) and the Caribbean may also increase this year, FAO says. Thailand is expected to supply most of the increased demand for imports this year. However, FAO says that most of the other rice exporters (Argentina, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Guyana, Pakistan, Paraguay, the U.S. and Vietnam) are also forecast to export more rice in 2014.India is likely to remain the worlds largest rice exporter in 2014, but exports by India are likely to decline this year to around 9.5 million tons, down about 10% from 2013, mainly due to reduced demand in Iran. Thailand is expected to export around 8.7 million tons in 2014, up about 30% from previous year, while Vietnams rice exports are forecast at around 7.2 milli on tons in 2014, up about 7% from previous year.
