XTRM OVERVIEW
Figure 1: xTRM Module The xTRM provides BBPD PA linearization function, Digital/Analog and Analog/Digital conversions and radio transceiver functions. The xTRM consists of two boards, the digital xTRM board (dxTRM) and radio xTRM board (rxTRM). dXTRM functions The dxTRM performs interface functions to transmit/receive signal samples to/from iCCM. The downlink samples are transferred to up to 6 Tx channelizer ASICs, which perform mainly pulse shaping, frequency shifting and peak power reduction (to improve PA efficiency). Each ASIC can support one UMTS channel. The ASICs can be cascaded so that the dxTRM transmits: three 1-carrier signals,

Base-band signals are then processed to enable the pre-distortion of the radio signal, according to the BBPD algorithm. Three PA feedback chains (one per PA) ensure the down-conversion and Analog/Digital conversion of the RF Tx signals to feed the BBPD algorithm: this one compares the feedback samples to the transmit samples and adjust automatically pre-distortion coefficients to minimize the error. On the uplink, the xTRM allows the reception of up to six dual-carrier signals. In other words, it manages the reception of two contiguous carriers on three sectors, including main and diversity RX paths. The dxTRM receives digital samples from the rxTRM. These samples are digitally match filtered and scaled by 6 Rx channelizer ASICs, each one handling one main and one diversity signals. The dxTRM retrieves configuration information and alarms via IC buses from DDMs and Tx splitter. It also has an RS-485 connection to the PA. rXTRM functions A rxTRM consists of three transmit chains and 3 dual-receive chains. On the RX side, radio signals received from DDM are down-converted, filtered, scaled and then Analog-to-Digital converted. The rxTRM receive function is designed for up to two UMTS carriers. On the Tx side, the rxTRM performs Digital-to-Analog conversion, frequency upconversion and amplification in the downlink direction. The downlink signal consists of up to 3 UMTS carriers.
Physical characteristics xTRM power consumption is 45W typically. The xTRM is 50mm wide. The weight of the xTRM is 4.5kg. The front faceplate is provided with: 3 RF outputs (Tx) 6 RF inputs (Rx) 3 BBPD feedback RF inputs 1 connector for digital communication with RF modules (PA, DDM and Tx splitter through RF ICO) 1 debug connector 2 LEDs to indicate power and module operational status.

On uplink, xTRM can support up to 3 sectors x Main&Div, up to 2 carriers. Up to 3 xTRM can be supported in 10 slots digital rack. xTRM can be mixed with any TRM and any MCPAs. xTRM in single carrier configuration has exactly the same behaviour than iTRM. xTRM is then compatible with all UMTS BTS. Refer to FPG to check the supported BTS according to software release.

UPGRADE PATH
The following section describes the operations to be performed in order to upgrade an existing site by increasing the number of RF carriers For STSR configuration, the upgrade from STSR1 to STSR2 does not require to change any BTS HW or cabling.
