SOVRINTENDENZA PER I BENI ARCHEOLOGICI DELLE MARCHE

COMUNE DI SAN COSTANZO

PICENUM SETTLEMENT SUMMER SCHOOL CITY OF SAN COSTANZO (PU) - MARCHE, ITALY

Introduction
In 2012 some archaeological excavations began at the cemetery of San Costanzo, a small village near the city of Pesaro, in the Marche Region. Archaeological excavations, which have been supervised by the Archaeological Soprintendenza (Marche) and funded by the council of San Costanzo, have focused on a wide area of 3.000 square meters; they have brought to light a necropolis dated back to Iron Age and situated not far from the coeval settlement. So far, special attention has been given to the cemetery area, which consists of 700 square meters and has revealed traces of 85 inhumation burials. By studying and restoring the objects forming the grave goods, it has been possible to date all materials back to the 8th century B.C. The 90% of burials have revealed grave good inside: masculine burials presented object related to arms, whereas the feminine ones showed several cloths accessories, ceramic vases, objects for spinning, and many types of jewellery, such as earrings made of amber, vitreous paste necklace and bronze rings.

The Project
The Archaeological Soprintendenza has arranged for an archaeological excavation to be undertaken on the whole area: it has been planned to investigate both the necropolis and the areas characterised by the human presence. Details of the agreement are available here (in Italian only) AdArte have been appointed to carry out the archaeological excavation: their experience in didactic/ education and high qualified experts is the reason for this choice. They have worked in particular with the University of Siena and led educational projects in several places in Emilia-Romagna. In order to provide a high quality experience of archaeological diggings, a qualified staff of archaeologists, restorers, anthropologists, topographers, archaeozoologists, have been established. The project is addressed to foreign students and aims at teaching both archaeological excavation techniques based on stratigraphic method, and restoration and conservation procedures for ancient objects.

The Project
Aims and objectives of the project
The main aim of the project is to provide foreign students coming from overseas Universities with a real and great archaeological experience. Students can also benefit from working together with professional archaeologists, who can teach how to dig burials and settlements, to build up archaeological documentations such as drawings, sections and stratigraphic units recording sheets, taphonomy recording sheets, objects recording sheets, and findings storage. All students will be developing skills of how to undertake a stratigraphic digging and set up appropriate documentations independently. Moreover, they will be gaining knowledge of GIS data handling. The archaeological experience will be supported by in-depth seminars on topography, anthropology, restoration led by high qualified tutors. The archaeological dig is conducted in one of the most verdant Italian lands, near the city of Pesaro, where Gioacchino Rossini was born, and the city of Urbino, famous for the prestigious University, for being an important cross-road in the 15th century and for being the place where Federico from Montefeltro built the well-known Palazzo Ducale. The summer school will be supervised by the Archaeological Soprintendenza (Marche); supervisor will be Dr. Maria Gloria Cerquetti (www.archeomarche. beniculturali.it). It will be organised and managed by the Council of San Costanzo and some archaeologists from AdArte (www.adartesnc.com) , in particular by Chiara Cesaretti, Luca Mandolesi ed Alessandro Campedelli. As part of the summer school programme, room and board have already been arranged in order to offer excellent services in terms of accommodation, wine and food products, all coming from the inland.

The Project
Entry requirements
In order to register for the summer school, students have to submit an up to date CV by the 30th of June 2014. Curricula have to be sent by email to: servizi.culturali@adartesnc.com Selection of students will be based on related skills and knowledge; however students with little or no previous experience are encouraged to apply as they will be considered as well. The summer school can offer 15 places among undergraduate and post-graduate (Master and PhD) students.

Duration of the summer school

The Picenum settlement summer school will start on Sunday the 17th of August 2014 (arrival date) until Saturday the 6th of September 2014 (departure date). Equipment
All students have to bring their own safety boots, gloves, trowel, hat and sun lotion. Students have to be vaccinated against tetanus and bring with them a certificate of good health from their GP. On site, there will be a shed provided with electricity, table and chairs: here, digitalization of data coming from the site will take place by using laptops. In the cemetery, it has been hired a room for temporary materials storage. Toilets with WC and sink are available from students in the cemetery.

The Project
Archaeological activities
The archaeological team that will be supervising students during all phases of the summer school is made of three professional archaeologists holding a first degree, specialisation degree and PhD from various Italian Universities, a restorer and an expert of archaeological materials. They have gained a broad experience in Piceum setting and have taken part to archaeological diggings carried out in the area. In addition to the above qualified staff, some competent anthropologists, geoarchaeologists and archeozoologists will be involved. All activities will be carried out in English language. In order to manage data from excavation, such as sections and stratigraphic units recording sheets, materials recording sheets, and matrix, QGis and Pyarchnit software will be used. They are open-source software especially developed for archaeological data management. Students can also use a Topcon GPT 3005 station to learn some topographic survey techniques. Main activities during archaeological excavation are as follows:

Archaeological digging Graphical survey made by drawn, snapshot, sections Photographic survey undertaken by digital camera Data import on GIS Digital stratigraphic units recording sheets, structure recording sheets, taphonomy General, in detail and phase plans Use of Harris Matrix Cataloguing and recording techniques by using materials labels Material storage Digital images cataloguing
recording sheets, and person recording sheets

The Project
Non-archaeological activities
On Saturdays and Sundays, as explained above, there are no archaeological activities. During weekends, students may organise independently some tours to the nearby cities (Pesaro, Urbino, Ancona, Fano, Senigallia, Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia, Arezzo, Rimini, Bologna, Firenze), take part to some wine and food tours, or decide to spend their own time in some of the seaside cities (the site is about 30km -19 miles from the seaside).
